It's true that there can be long waits. But public healthcare in Canada and in the UK is getting worse for the same reason: Conservatives refusing to fund it because they want to drive everyone into private, for-profit healthcare. It's the same reason Conservatives try to break public education and other public services: they serve only the rich who will profit from privatization while everyone else suffers.

Conservatives govern almost all Canadian provinces, which is the level at which healthcare is run. The Conservatives who are about to take over federally have explicitly stated their goal of making Canadian healthcare more like the USA's. They undermine it for ideological reasons and for their own gain.

A properly funded public healthcare system remains the best system for ordinary people.

Also experience shows that it's possible to backdoor software in very subtle ways that could go years without anyone spotting them. So if he had decided to he probably could have done it, despite Linux being open source.

Makes me glad I turned it off on the home network because I didn't trust myself to be able to firewall it properly.

I'm old enough to remember the start of eternal September. It hasn't stopped yet.

my downvotes. They are reserved for low-quality content, not that which I personally disagree with.

There was more of that in the early days of Reddit. At some point everyone abandoned that principle, and from them on every thread became more of a battle than a conversation.

None. Very occasionally reddit if I'm looking for help with something specific. I keep a Facebook account for advertising events on behalf of an organization but never use it otherwise. Twitter never appealed, and I didn't pursue Mastodon very hard because that format just doesn't really grab me. I hope the Fediverse keeps going strong and doesn't end up swallowed by corporations.

If they wind up believing they got scammed by Elon Musk, something good may come of this in the end.

His point is just to find a way to scare his voters by calling her a communist. It's the most pathetic attack ever.

Trump said of Harris: “She cosponsored legislation to abolish very popular private health insurance, which 150 [million] Americans rely on, dumping everyone onto inferior socialist government run health care systems with rationing and deadly wait times, while massively raising your taxes. She wants to take away your private health care.”

“It’s the best health care in the world,” he continued, adding: “You’re all going to be thrown into a communist system … You’re going to be thrown into a system where everybody gets health care.”

This bullshit about rationing and deadly wait times can only work on the most ignorant people who don't realize healthcare is better and more affordable in many other countries.

There may be a bit of "she won't hurt the right people" in there too.

And the entry requirements are mostly money.

That figure of 40,000 will be only a fraction of the true death toll so far, given that many bodies will lie under rubble and many others will die from medical conditions worsened by the circumstances.

King has since defended his actions despite pushback from the charity that organized the field trip and the girl’s mother, who said her daughter was tired that day because the family doesn’t have a permanent residence.

Ah, the good old American tradition of punishing the most vulnerable members of society for being so.

Later on, King asked the girl, “What is your problem?” She replied, “I apologize, I’m just tired.”

King also threatened to throw the girl into juvenile detention, asking the teen, “You do understand we have a jail for kids?”

“I’m going to go to sleep tonight while you’re sitting in a juvenile detention centre,” he added.

Well he sounds like a calm and level-headed guy with a sense of proportion and definitely not a raging asshole with ego issues and a grudge. Just the sort of person you want for a judge.

A federal judge in Florida on Friday permanently blocked a key part of Governor Ron DeSantis’s anti-woke legislation that would have banned diversity- and race-related training in private workplaces.

An “egregious” refusal by successive Canadian governments to honor a key treaty signed with Indigenous nations made a “mockery” of the deal and deprived generations of fair compensation for their resources, Canada’s top court has ruled.

But while the closely watched decision will likely yield billions in payouts, First Nation chiefs say the ruling adds yet another hurdle in the multi-decade battle for justice.

In a scathing and unanimous decision released on Friday, Canada’s supreme court sharply criticized both the federal and Ontario governments for their “dishonourable” conduct around a 174-year-old agreement, which left First Nations people to struggle in poverty while surrounding communities, industry and government exploited the abundant natural resources in order to enrich themselves.

“For almost a century and a half, the Anishinaabe have been left with an empty shell of a treaty promise,” the court wrote in the landmark ruling.
