Just trying to understand whether this was a tragic accident or if the donkey is a racist asshole.

Not yet... few more years of climate change and those of us left will welcome the reliability and independence afforded by the horse. We'll get there!
It is a lesson I hope you only have to learn once.
Eight years ago I would have agreed. But, I think we've demonstrated the short comings of putting authority for our most important policies in the hands of your average citizen.
I don't have a better answer, mind you. Hopefully someone way further right on the "average citizen" bell curve has better ideas.

Very hard to match existing texture pattern if you've not done it before. If it's something you're going to look at every day, and it would annoy you to be able to see it, then I would definitely go for the double gang.
