It was a class rule that we had to recite the pledge. I was suspended for not following the rules of the class, not for not reciting the pledge. But this was the early 90s and I was more worried about not being beat by my mother than I was about my rights.

Had this happen to me. I worked in a cubicle farm and had women on all sides who would talk about their sex lives from their cubes (looking over the walls like a gopher) with me stuck in the center. I asked if they could have their discussions elsewhere and one went to hr and said I was eavesdropping. I got the write up.

First snort is free, then yeah after that there is a paywall. That is typically how drugs work.

My wife found out she was pregnant with our son at about 7 1/2 months pregnant. She had just had our daughter and had none of the signs of pregnancy she previously had.

I was suspended from school multiple times for refusing to pledge allegiance when I was in high school in the states.

So you can look in and see how the pie is cooking and if the center is done yet.

Chipotle Mayo (ovo) (i.imgur.com)
submitted 1 month ago by [email protected] to c/[email protected]

Ingredients:
1 egg
1/2 teaspoon salt 1 tablespoon acid (I used lemon juice, but vinegar works too)
1+ chipotle in adobo sauce (I used 4)
3/4c olive oil

Directions: Put all ingredients in a wide mouth jar or beaker if you have one, ensuring your opening is large enough for your stick/immersion blender

Fully submerge a stick blender and begin blending starting at the bottom, after a short time start slowly moving the blender upward until everything is blended and the oil has emulsified into mayo.

This likely could be made vegan by replacing the egg with another emulsifier, I think lecithin will work. I am not familiar with using it, so use at your own risk.

Red Beans & Rice (i.imgur.com)
submitted 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) by [email protected] to c/[email protected]

Ingredients: Salt and pepper
1 pound (2 cups) small dried red beans, picked over and rinsed
3 tablespoons unsalted vegan butter (or oil)
1 onion, chopped fine
1 green bell pepper, stemmed, seeded, and chopped fine
1 celery rib, chopped fine
3 garlic cloves, minced
2 teaspoons minced canned chipotle chile in adobo sauce (I really like chipotles, so I add a lot, maybe 4 entire chipotles). 1½ teaspoons smoked paprika. 1 teaspoon minced fresh thyme or ¼ teaspoon dried. 2 bay leaves
⅛ teaspoon cayenne pepper
1 teaspoon red wine vinegar, plus extra as needed
3 scallions, sliced thin. Hot sauce

Directions:

  1. FOR THE RED BEANS: Dissolve 3 tablespoons salt in 4 quarts cold water in large container. Add beans and soak at room temperature for at least 8 hours or up to 24 hours. Drain and rinse well.

  2. Melt 1 tablespoon butter in Dutch oven over medium heat. Add onion, bell pepper, celery, and ½ teaspoon salt and cook, stirring often, until vegetables are softened, 6 to 7 minutes. Stir in garlic, chipotle, paprika, thyme, bay leaves, cayenne, and ¼ teaspoon pepper and cook until fragrant, about 30 seconds. Stir in beans and 9 cups water and bring to boil over high heat. Reduce heat to medium-low and simmer vigorously, stirring occasionally, until beans are just soft and liquid begins to thicken, 45 to 60 minutes.

  3. Stir in vinegar and 1 teaspoon salt and cook until liquid is thick and beans are fully tender and creamy, about 30 minutes.

  4. FOR THE RICE: Melt butter in large saucepan over medium heat. Add rice and cook, stirring often, until edges begin to turn translucent, about 2 minutes. Add water and salt and bring to boil. Cover, reduce heat to low, and simmer until liquid is absorbed and rice is tender, about 20 minutes. Remove pot from heat, lay clean folded dish towel underneath lid, and let rice sit for 10 minutes. Fluff rice with fork.

  5. Discard bay leaves from beans and stir in remaining 2 tablespoons butter. Season with salt and extra vinegar to taste. Portion rice into individual bowls, top with beans, and sprinkle with scallions. Serve with hot sauce.

Since quoted text already gets the pipes to show it is quoted is it possible to not darken the text? Or a setting to disable it? I already have per app high contrast set for Mlem but this really does not do too much.

Federal wildlife officials declared a rare lizard in southeastern New Mexico and West Texas an endangered species Friday, citing future energy development, sand mining and climate change as the biggest threats to its survival in one of the world’s most lucrative oil and natural gas basins.

“We have determined that the dunes sagebrush lizard is in danger of extinction throughout all of its range,” the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service said. It concluded that the lizard already is “functionally extinct” across 47% of its range.

Much of the the 2.5-inch-long (6.5-centimeter), spiny, light brown lizard's remaining habitat has been fragmented, preventing the species from finding mates beyond those already living close by, according to biologists.

“Even if there were no further expansion of the oil and gas or sand mining industry, the existing footprint of these operations will continue to negatively affect the dunes sagebrush lizard into the future,” the service said in its final determination, published in the Federal Register.

The decision caps two decades of legal and regulatory skirmishes between the U.S. government, conservationists and the oil and gas industry. Environmentalists cheered the move, while industry leaders condemned it as a threat to future production of the fossil fuels.

The decision provides a “lifeline for survival” for a unique species whose “only fault has been occupying a habitat that the fossil fuel industry has been wanting to claw away from it,” said Bryan Bird, the Southwest director for Defenders of Wildlife.

“The dunes sagebrush lizard spent far too long languishing in a Pandora’s box of political and administrative back and forth even as its population was in free-fall towards extinction,” Bird said in a statement.

The Permian Basin Petroleum Association and the New Mexico Oil & Gas Association expressed disappointment, saying the determination flies in the face of available science and ignores longstanding state-sponsored conservation efforts across hundreds of thousands of acres and commitment of millions of dollars in both states.

“This listing will bring no additional benefit for the species and its habitat, yet could be detrimental to those living and working in the region,” PBPA President Ben Shepperd and NMOGA President and CEO Missi Currier said in a joint statement, adding that they view it as a federal overreach that can harm communities.

Joost Klein, the Dutch entrant for this month’s Eurovision Song Contest, denies all the charges which led to him being thrown out of the competition, his lawyer Jan-Åke Fält has told Swedish media.

Klein, whose song Europapa was one of the competition favourites, was disqualified on Saturday after an incident at Thursday’s rehearsal between him and a camerawoman. He now faces being charged with “criminal intimidation”, according to Swedish media.

Swedish police said earlier that they were accelerating the prosecution process because they consider the evidence to be strong and because the offence is not more serious.

But Fält told local reporters Klein denies wrongdoing. “As I understand it, there was an agreement between him and the event management,” he said. “It was a sensitive occasion where he was not to be photographed leaving the stage. He should have been met just by his team but there was photographer standing there. He asked the person to stop filming.”

The photographer, says Fält, did not listen to Klein who then pushed the camera away to get rid of it. “He denies having threatened this person,” the lawyer said.

Fält said a preliminary trial date had been set for early June but that the police are not yet finished with their investigation.

“We have been informed of the investigation and now have the opportunity to comment on it,” he said. “We will request that some Dutch people appear as witnesses…I think the chances of him being acquitted are good.”

The European Broadcasting Union issued a statement on Tuesday saying that the Dutch version of events did not correspond with the witness accounts.

“Joost’s behaviour was in clear breach of contest rules, which are designed to ensure there is a safe working environment for all staff and to protect the production,” the EBU statement said.

My wife and I walk our dogs on a trail along the Rio Grande every morning, and years ago I found this patch of Mountain Gooseberries. The birds usually get to the ripe ones before I do. I never pick too many to ensure the birds do have enough. As the patch has grown, and continues to grow, I eat more.
