I am starting to dislike YouTube Music for cramming in music I don't like no matter how many times I use the thumbs down. I have already tried Spotify and Apple Music and didn't like either. I do buy records from Bandcamp but a streaming service is necessary as well. Should I try Deezer? Pandora not available here. Or even Amazon Music?

Edit: thank you for all information, it is really helpful 💖 I will check out pixelfed (.art) and go from there, maybe later setting up something "at home" ! Thanks again !!!

Hello !

I just got asked for a link to my paintings, and well I don't have an art portfolio online and after trying some free ones out, I haven't found anything nice (ease if useno nag-ware) so I thought of Devianart where lits of good pixel artists hanged around some ten years ago ...

But I have heard Devianart is no longer recommended or the goto place for your portfolio, is that so (or not ofc!) and if, do you have any recommendations for a free online portfolio? Say 30-40 paintings tops.

I'm thinking about setting up something myself so self hosting (FOSS) recommendations are greatly appreciated too!

Cheers!

I keep getting a red banner saying “Toastify is awesome” when updating. What does it mean, and what should I do differently?

After a best mate of mine introduced me to Fela Kuti's works I've been real interested in hearing music from other cultures you don't hear much stuff from. Doesn't have to be traditional music styles (love it when genres and cultures fuse together, like Masayoshi Takanaka taking influence from Brazilian music), but I'd love to hear that as well!

As a software engineer I have adapted to the world turning upside down every couple of years and having to learn new concepts and technologies. However, I have been noticing other fields struggling to adapt as things change in a faster scale.

For example, some researchers have pointed out that the number of papers about ADHD increases exponentially every year. However, most mental health professionals, at least in my area, seem to be severily outdated, often using information that has been debunked within the last 10-20 years.

So, I was wondering if other fields are affected and how they are adapting?

Edit: Bonus question, assuming a 40hr week (a luxury for most), how much time out those 40hrs would you need to spend on education?

I wonder how some of these folks are even eligible to have gained entry, much less be permitted to stay and act so badly.

How does this happen, why is it so easy for randos to set up shop there and become intractable?

Do they do anything particular with their voice or tone in order to enhance the story?

We recently had an unfortunate situation where an external magnetic hard drive was dropped while spinning. I knew before we even checked that the heads were gonners, and sure enough the drive seems dead. Unfortunately this was a drive inherited from a deceased relative that were starting to backup at the time the accident happened and now a lot of family photos are inaccessible if not gone forever.

I'm just getting my feet wet trying to find potential recovery services to get quotes, but I thought it was worth asking you fine folks if you have any experience that might help out. Companies to avoid or who may be worth it even if their quote is high.

One specific question I have pertains to what's recovered (since most of these services seem to charge based on the amount recovered): We're only concerned with photos but this was, at one point, the single drive in Mac, so there's tons of OS and other files we don't want or need. Are we likely to get charged for it anyway?

I'd guess my net environmental impact is just now lower than US average because, despite my fuel consumption when moving my home, it's tiny, energy independent, and it doesn't move far or frequently. I don't really know. I just don't want to be judged unfairly, particularly when seeking help trying to do it even better.

I want to downsize my truck for cost and fuel efficiency. I've had this truck, my first, for a year, 3.5k miles. I've towed the trailer a short thousand miles without incident and including city, highway, and interstate.

Current setup:

'19 Chevy 2500 6.0L 4WD

Hitch towing ~2.5 tons GVWR (14', enclosed, tandem, brakes)

Getting 8mpg @ 70-75mph

Next truck budget is $10-20k. I'll keep it probably until the frame rots. I'm planning on replacing shocks & wearable steering components, am not averse to some work.

Should I target a 1/2 ton gas (leaning Ford 5.0L 4WD), a different 3/4 ton gas (which and why), or a 3/4 ton diesel (leaning Dodge Cummins)?

The paper numbers say I should get a 1/2 ton gas. But, my more experienced friend thinks I'll be a lot happier spending more for a diesel because diesel engines can last a long time, it'll at least double my fuel efficiency, and it's a little extra overkill for an easier tow.

I'm open to all informed perspectives. What's my best plan and why?

Or is it just a term made up to find an easier reason to reject job applicants?

So it looks like the consensus is "overqualified" is a euphemism for

  • "I'm afraid you'll leave this job because I'm assuming you'll have better chances elsewhere" aka "you won't accept being my slave forever due to lack of opportunities"
  • "I'm afraid you might actually understand how shitty it is here and want to improve things. can't have that"
  • "I don't want to figure out how much to pay you when you know your worth"
  • "You cost too much"
  • "I have other reasons, but won't say them"

My random tales:

One night, playing bunch of Halo, I got an Xbox 360 voice message. "Message to all recent players. Fukushima nuclear power plant just exploded. You should stock up on iodine tablets." (I almost sent back a message saying "thanks for your concern, but I'm in the Chernobyl fallout zone and I turned out just fine thank you")

Pluto photographs from New Horizons? Frigging NASA retweet. (Edit: Actually I think it was a retweet of someone making a Disney meme about Pluto the Dog)

Most recently, I got a random Discord message from a British YouTuber I follow saying "the Queen just died, please be respectful and stuff".

I play guitar and drums. I want to find friends to play with, but I'm not connected into any music circles. Currently, my social circle is only salsa and bachata dancers. Any ideas how I can find others?

ps - I'm pretty socially anxious and autistic, so making friends takes me extra effort and time.

I just watched Apollo 10 1/2, a Jack Black narrated story of how it was like living as a child, in Houston when the moon mission was in full swing.

I found it intriguing and set me thinking: most movies exaggerate/glamorise things around their stories. Maybe they have to, to make the movies interesting.

But what are some movies that, kind of, provide a, kind of, window peep into a place/time. An 'authentic' representation of it, as close to how you saw/experienced it? Maybe you could expand it to include the travel documentaries/vlogs too because I find that most of them choose only the highlights of a place and look away from the mundane.

Cheers!

My weakness is tiramisu, it's so frickin good. Hook me up with a piece of that and I'm in heaven.

But what about you, what dessert item really moves your meter?

Saw something about Pine-Sol being a "bug repellant" and people use it to clean patios/decks. I have composite deck boards and just want to make sure it won't damage them.
