Hello comrades and welcome to the fifth and last improvement megathread of June! rainbow-has

How was your June? What would you like to focus on in July?

Fun fact: tomorrow (July 1st) will be the exact middle day of the year. It will be the 183rd day of the year and 183 more days will remain until the end of the year. Good time to look back and review your year so far. It's also a good time to remember your new year resolutions and get back on track with your goals. A lot progress can be done in 6 months. What would you like to do until the end of the year?

@[email protected]'s great commrequest to create this comm was here, and the improover thread that inspired it is here. Hopefully, we can make this space a place for comrades to talk about their efforts to improve oneself.

This community's purpose is to gather ways for us leftists to become more effective and self-disciplined, forging healthy habits and setting goals. It is undoubtably true that most problems that we experience are due to systemic issues. We do, however, possess some degree of individual agency that we can exert.

We explicitly reject the narratives of "grindset" and "increasing productivity" which are usually associated with "self improvement" among grifter circles, especially in the context of working for capitalists to earn a wage and giving them even more of your surplus value. If you're in a position to slack off at work and still receive a wage that can support you, then don't work any harder than necessary for those bougie motherfuckers. This is a community that is focussed on self-improvement in every other way, allowing us to become happier, healthier, and more knowledgable communists. I believe that we should, as much as possible and when it is safe to do so without being assaulted by chuds, be role models for communism - compassionate, caring, and hard-working (as said before, outside of the workplace). We should be, as much as possible, friendly and reliable to those around us - somebody other people go to when they need support or are confused about the world. After all:

As revolutionaries, we don't have the right to say we are tired of explaining. We must never stop explaining. We know that when the people understand, they cannot help but follow us.

While revolutionary scenarios in the imperial core are very rare right now, we are entering an incredibly tumultuous global situation in the coming years and decades as American quasi-hegemony is threatened. We must be prepared, and cultivate discipline and revolutionary optimism now, so that we can take advantage of all opportunities that come our way. As our comrades in Palestine and elsewhere are fighting imperialism on the front lines, spilling their blood for a better world, we must not fall into resignation and doomerism. We must not cede the concept of improving oneself and becoming a better person to right-wingers and self-help guru grifters.

We naturally have a lot of overlap with c/fitness and c/theory, as well as other communities. Again, this is self-improvement in virtually every way - whether you want to eat healthier (and ideally go im-vegan), improve fitness (whether that's to be big and muscular, or more thin and lithe), transition successfully via HRT and voice training, stopping doomscrolling on Twitter or Reddit so much in your spare time, stopping smoking/drinking/etc, learning a language - and a dozen other ways that you can improve yourself.

Comrades over at Unity Struggle Unity have put together a list recently on how to become a stronger comrade, including:

  1. Learning a new language, especially that of the largest minority in your country (such as Spanish in the US).
  2. Learn first aid and CPR, as well as how to administer and receive narcan.
  3. Meet your neighbours - either introduce yourself in person, or, if you're shy, write a polite note and leave a small gift. Obviously, sometimes your neighbours are hostile chuds and so shouldn't be engaged with if possible.
  4. Join or start a reading group. Note that @[email protected] and many others have been discussing getting these back on track.
  5. Know where your community resources are, if applicable - such as the closest food pantry, warming shelter, free clinic, libraries, etc.
  6. Brush up on how to protest safely, including from a legal perspective.
  7. Pay attention to local boycotts, as well as larger ones like BDS. Don't cross picket lines.
  8. If you have the time and energy, volunteering in your community is a good way to contribute and socialize with others in your community and build organizational and life skills.
  9. Read theory, and also the history of communist organizing.
  10. Take care of yourself. Eat as well as you can on your budget. Get enough sleep. Go outside, even if just for a walk around the block every day (remember to mask when needed!) Be social, if that helps you.

Hello comrades and welcome to the fourth improvement megathread of June! hexbear-pride

As usual, some discussion ideas:

  • Do you want to share something you've done in the previous week? Everything counts, nothing is too small.
  • Do you have any plans or goals for next week?
  • Do you have any streaks? For example, "sober for one day." Feel free to post your streak every day in this thread.
  • If you don't have a continuous streak, did you manage to abstain from something for a day or more?
  • Did you come across some useful information or resource that might help others?

Saying “quit meth” is cheating + I’m kinda trying anyways.

I’ve always had problems with food/eating since I was a kid, but it’s gotten pretty suck. I think part of what made me stop being able to see myself as femme was, in fact, becoming so thin, with my gaunt face and bony hips and what I think is some sagging skin from rapid weight loss (I’d really like to get rid of that shit too, especially on my neck).

Last couple weeks I’ve been turning things around, starting to eat more, but I have a difficult time with appetite, and this pickiness I’ve had since I was a kid. Most things I could buy ingredients for and “make at home” are unappealing. I keep going to the store to buy food and walk out with fucking candy.

What the fuck does this have to do with self-improvement?

Well, I think this all kicked off because I saw one too many videos showcasing old sea monkey accessories and, for some reason, it sparked my interest and I started researching shrimp. I live in a small place and I'm on a limited budget with very limited energy so a freshwater shrimp tank feels like an ideal way to provide enrichment in my enclosure.

My intention is to have a fairly closed loop system that is self-sustaining with minimal input or intervention from me, which meets my constraints, and because I intend to only have a heater and a fan for temperature control during weather extremes plus a light (for obvious reasons) I will need to ensure that I have the right environment and especially the right plants to maintain the water quality. In the initial phase I'm expecting there to be an excess of nutrients and so I'm planning on getting a fast-growing semi-aquatic vining houseplant, Pothos, to help maintain the water quality.

Because this particular plant will have all of its water and nutrient requirements being met by the tank that it will be planted in, if things go well then really the only thing that I should need to do will be to stick some inconspicuous hooks on the wall for it to grow along.

Likewise with the tank, the inputs from me should be minimal and I expect that they will be able to be done on an ad-hoc basis rather than needing constant attention and intervention after it has been established.

It will be nice to have something that I am making for myself, for my own appreciation and to make my environment more inviting for me.

I think it will be a nice use of my knowledge too because there's some things that are less commonly done in aquarium-keeping which I plan to try out - there's this one riparian plant that is very popular as an edible vegetable, especially in East Asia, that I know how to cultivate and I suspect will be really suitable for feeding shrimp with. It's also very fast growing, high in nutritional content, and actually quite pretty (with a tiny bit of maintenance). I haven't seen any discussion about this plant as food for shrimp, or any aquatic animals tbh, but I think it's going to be a really good fit. It would be really nice to be able to rip off a little piece of leaf every now and then for shrimp food from a plant which has grown in the very same tank, removing the excess nutrients that would otherwise cause it to become inhospitable to the shrimp. Plus it will cost a couple of dollars to get a few cuttings going and then with a little luck it should be a perpetual food source.

Likewise, if I decide to scale up and make a bigger shrimp tank then I can use my gardening skills to propagate the plants that I will already have to start planting out a larger aquascape and I have already figured out a good supplementary food to give shrimp to encourage breeding and to feed baby shrimplets if I do choose to scale up. It's probably tedious to read about but for a few bucks of input I should be able to make an extremely low maintenance micro worm culture which relies upon apple cider vinegar - something you can buy fairly cheaply but if I am going to make it a fixture then I have the knowledge of how to make a simple, very low cost operation to produce apple cider vinegar from store bought apple juice because I am very comfortable with brewing and I am familiar with how to maintain cultures like mother of vinegar.

I'm sure it sounds complicated but it's really just going to be one bottle of apple juice fermenting away, a vessel of apple wine being converted into vinegar, and a couple of bottles of vinegar eels culturing away - all of which would probably require an hour of time all up which would be spread out over the course of 6 months, including the time it takes to harvest the worms for feeding the tank with.

So I bought a large vase that will be suitable as a shrimp tank the other day on semi-impulse and I'm hoping to turn it into a redoubt against the part of me that wants to give up and check out, without turning it into something that will put huge demands on me.

Maybe someday I'll be able to post a few pictures to show the progress I have made.

Judging by the forum posts I'm looking at runners are very serious about this and I don't feel like being subjected to smug ire from classist elitist assholes. The course in question is 95% public sidewalks and I'll be damned if I'm going to pay $75 for a t-shirt, a number, and some snacks (in other words I don't intend to partake in any of them) and I don't even care about placing.

Maybe if I email the organizers and beg they'll give me a fake number so I don't get bullied or something I don't know. Has anyone done this before?

Edit: Thanks everyone you've been very helpful <3 I'm going to email the organizers and try to get a deal and if that doesn't work I'm going to just go for it. Maybe throw in $5 if theres a donation.

I have been a radical on laziness ever since I received my ADHD diagnosis (this was almost 10 years ago now.) It wasn't until just today that I found an explanation for WHY I felt this way about the word "lazy" and "laziness". This guy sums it up better than I ever could.

Nothing will send me into a rage more than hearing someone describe someone else as "lazy". I have zero filter on the subject. I have, and will continue to, lambaste people who genuinely express the notion that someone's problem is that they are simply "lazy". It's a weasel word. It's a thought terminating descriptor. It is the farthest from a materialist perspective you could have. People who genuinely believe in the concept of laziness are void of empathy, and need to be told such. Laziness is a bourgeois notion, used to trivialize your situation.

If you have been telling yourself that you are "lazy" or that your problems would just "go away" if you could just stop being so "lazy" I need you to understand something:

You are not lazy!

You are the product of your material conditions, this includes your social conditions. Changing those conditions is not a simple matter, but hopefully recognizing the root of your "laziness" can help you make moves to find more compatible conditions.

I use LanguageTool and while it helps correct my grammar and spelling, which is great in my day-to-day work, I know that it also doesn't help me be proactive about correcting those mistakes myself. I have a lot of bad muscle memory and generally poor spelling and grammar, and often I rely on LanguageTool to correct what, I feel, are mistakes that are, elementary, at best.

The hard part is, I feel like there are not many resources or tools out there to help an adult like myself improve these aspects of my writing. This is ignorance on my part I'm sure, but also when searching in the past, the results are always geared towards children.

I would like to feel less reliant on LanguageTool and tools like it, and feel more confident about my spelling and writing generally. I'm often second guessing myself, even when I spell something correctly.

Just to illustrate the issue, behind this spoiler is an uncorrected version of this message. Which was hard for me to not use LanguageTool to correct during the writing process.

Self Improvement

212 readers
7 users here now

A community which focusses on improving yourself. This can be in many different ways - from improving physical health or appearance, to improving mental health, creating better habits, overcoming addictions, etc.

While material circumstances beyond our control do govern much of our daily lives, people do have agency and choices to make, whether that is as "simple" as disciplining yourself to not doomscroll, to as complex as recreating yourself to have many different hobbies and habits.

This is not a place where all we do is talk about improving "productivity" (in a workplace context) and similar terms and harmful lifestyles like "grindset". Self-improvement here is intended to make you a generally better and happier person, as well as a better communist, and any other roles you may have in your life.

Rules and guidelines:

  1. Posts should be about self-improvement. This is obviously a wide category, and can range from advice, to finding resources, to self-posts about needing to improve in a certain area, or how you have improved, and many other things.

  1. Use content warnings when discussing difficult subjects.

  1. Do not make medical decisions solely because of a discussion you have had with any person here (e.g. whether to take or not take medications; diagnoses; etc.) as we do not vet people. All medical problems should be discussed with a real-life medical professional.

  1. Do not post harmful advice here. If this is seen, then please report it and we shall remove it. If you are unsure about whether it's precisely harmful advice or not but feel uneasy about it, please report it anyway.

  1. Do not insult other users and their lifestyles or their habits (unless they ask, I suppose). This is a place for self-improvement. Critique and discussion about a course of action is encouraged over shit-flinging. Don't talk down to people.
