Holy shit people under capitalism are fucking evil towards the most vulnerable people.

How many boomers are losing their shit over kids committing petty crimes is insane.

You'd think they'd click that it's because of poverty and, you know, there being NO FUCKING FUTURE.

But no, old people are screeching about how kids are little shits that need to be punished even more. They want to just arrest everyone and create career criminals instead of solving the real root causes behind it (poverty, capitalism, lack of society caring about their problems).

They act as though this was caused because "people are too nice to their kids now."

Holy shit, are you joking?

These poor fucking kids man.

I hate that the media can just heard old people like this, stop them from seeing issues created by powerful adults by attacking literal children.

It's the most obvious fash propaganda technique and yet they fall for this kind of shit all the time

Society has been turned into child sacrificing monsters, what hope so we have of a better future if THIS is what the people with the most power believe.

doomer sadness-abysmal

A species that eats its own children is doomed to extincton.

Nah, this is a thing in America and it's been something I've been around for my entire life. Older people have always talked shit about the youth. Young people also talk shit about other young people. Everytime I hear people start to say "young people these days [insert wildly dumb generalization about youth]" I want to pull my fucking hair out.

Oh yeah totally, I know that, but this is different. The mainstream media has been on and on about "the youth crime crisis." And it was the biggest issue the politicians are running their platform on. There have been several protests by old people demanding tougher action against kids and the police are removing a lot of protections kids have against the police.

Also when I was a kid no one could force me to leave my school bag unattended outside a shop.

It's definitely a thing in the US and Canada. It's impossible to go anywhere without hearing simultaneous whining about kids not going outside anymore paired with the most incredible restrictions on kids existing anywhere.

There was an HOA near where I used to live which installed those mosquito alarms throughout their subdivision so that people wouldn't have to see kids in common areas or have them playing in the street because those are for cars only.

They always made us leave bags, which made shoplifting way easier. Have a couple friends wander around with bags and make a fuss about giving them up and they're followed the whole time they're around. Walk in like 2 minutes later with no bag and steal

Everytime I hear people start to say "young people these days [insert wildly dumb generalization about youth]"

...in the fourth century BC, Plato was heard to remark: "What is happening to our young people? They disrespect their elders, they disobey their parents. They ignore the law. They riot in the streets, inflamed with wild notions..."

Not minimizing how annoying this is, but it's not exactly new. Old people have been doing the 'shake stick and yell at kids' for millenia now

Yes, this is a thing in America.

It also seems to mix with racism a lot.

Sounds like developed countries are slowly turning into developing countries. This is something I’ve always experienced in Guatemala and hasn’t ever stopped in the cities.

Capital eventually needs to devour its own home to keep the profits rising.

My state legislature in the USA is spending an inordinate amount of time crafting legislative fixes for the recent spree of car thefts that Young Criminals are committing after seeing tik toks about how easy it is. Given the racism and fear of cities here, you can imagine the confluence of weird reactionary ideas that goes through people's minds. They think it's Chinese psyops directing the hordes of illegal anchor babies to wreck their pickup trucks.

And it's not like youth crime isn't a problem. I street park my car, and we've had break-ins and catalytic converter theft in this neighborhood, so I personally want some solutions. But there's never any thought put into actually trying to improve the opportunities that these kids have. Or to providing support for direct interventions in the lives of those kids who are most at-risk (it's usually pretty obvious which ones those are, you can just ask their teachers). Instead, we just get the usual responses: more cops, and platitudes about how the state government is going to sue Kia. Meanwhile, we continue to create a world that is utterly hostile to kids. Children of Men is an aspirational goals for these people, I swear.

youth crime was a pretty big talking point for national in last year's election (new zealand), so yeah those brainworms are here too now but idk if they're an invasive australian species or a similar native one since I don't know how the emergence of those narratives lined up chronologically.

i live in the us midwest and in my city old farts won't shut the fuck up about it either. they're really big into complaining about car joy rides here. reactionaries have always hated the kids though. i mean, even fucking "ask them questions, i know nothing" Socrates himself whined about how the advent of writing was going to make the kids stupid because real thinkers could keep it all in their heads and speeches.

and some stupid labor governer is literally going to breathe life into these boomer rants by making prison sentences for teenage offender harsher or sthing, fucking genius

[–] [email protected] 11 points 4 months ago (1 children)

From what I hear this has been a thing in ukkk for ages.

The US also obviously has it to some degree and has horrific policies towards the kids, but I don't think its the same level of cultural obsession rn at least

[–] [email protected] 11 points 4 months ago

i remember an article from a UK rag about british youths being targeted for antisocial behavior by the police and neighbors.

the antisocial behavior: gathering in groups in the public park, standing around and talking to each other. telling jokes. laughing.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago) (1 children)

Not in Australia but yeah, chuds and libs are really weird about it. Very bloodthirsty too. I often hear "the parents of those kids should be shot!" what-the-hell

[–] [email protected] 6 points 4 months ago

Literally had a boomer family member talk about running them over with his car agony-shivering

[–] [email protected] 10 points 4 months ago

Our local fascist here in Austria has recently suggested putting all youth criminals in camps.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 4 months ago

I am also an Australia and yeah, I hate this shit. Like people say it and it sounds corny, but children are literally the future. I don't know why people are so dead set on hating them and making their lives worse.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 4 months ago

We hate kids so much in America, some businesses invest in sound systems just to blast out noise that only kids can hear.

It's for sure a thing. I live around a bunch of schools and life is hard during their lunch hour cause there's crowds of asshole kids everywhere, but that's cause they all get the same lunch hour and 3 schools are flooding the same McDonald's, the surrounding area will be a problem. But whatever, kids are obnoxious jerks who dont care about the people around them that ain't new. You note that you were just as shitty and move along.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 4 months ago (1 children)

schoolchildren going to mcdonalds for their lunch is already super fucked up dystopic shit

[–] [email protected] 6 points 4 months ago

Tbh I think a lot don't buy anything

I'm glad you're seeing this because so few see what's happening before their very eyes. It IS different from the moral panics of the past and it does go past "kids these days" The west hates and is hostile to it's children. Even pets are treated much nicer.
