Rules

1. Be niceDo not make personal attacks against each other, call for violence against anyone, or intentionally antagonize people in the comment sections.

2. Explain incorrect defense articles and takes

If you want to post a non-credible take, it must be from a "credible" source (news article, politician, or military leader) and must have a comment laying out exactly why it's non-credible. Random twitter and YouTube comments belong in the Low Hanging Fruit thread.

3. Content must be relevant

Posts must be about military hardware or international security/defense. This is not the page to fawn over Youtube personalities, simp over political leaders, or discuss other areas of international policy.

4. No racism / hatespeech

No slurs. No advocating for the killing of people or insulting them based on physical, religious, or ideological traits.

5. No politics

We don't care if you're Republican, Democrat, Socialist, Stalinist, Baathist, or some other hot mess. Leave it at the door. This applies to comments as well.

6. No seriousposting

We don't want your uncut war footage, fundraisers, credible news articles, or other such things. The world is already serious enough as it is.

7. No classified material

Classified information is off limits regardless of how "open source" and "easy to find" it is.

8. Source artwork

If you use somebody's art in your post or as your post, the OP must provide a direct link to the art's source in the comment section, or a good reason why this was not possible (such as the artist deleting their account). The source should be a place that the artist themselves uploaded the art. A booru is not a source. A watermark is not a source.

9. No low-effort posts

No egregiously low effort posts. These include Social media screenshots with a title punchline / no punchline, recent (after the start of the Ukraine War) reposts, simple reaction & template memes, and images with the punchline in the title. Put these in weekly Low effort thread instead.

10. Don't get us banned

No brigading or harassing other communities. Do not post memes with a "haha people that I hate died… haha" punchline or violating the sh.itjust.works rules (below). This includes content illegal in Canada.

I'll take the Flugabwehrkanonenpanzerkampfwagen Gepard instead.

The Germans always have a mouthful

Flugabwehrkanonenpanzerkampfwagen Gepard

It literally means "aerial-defense-cannon-armoured-battle-vehicle cheetah". Not shorter in English.

German doesn't have longer words, it's just that you can stick together existing words to make up new words. For example, "the front door of the house" in German is "Haustür", literally "housedoor". It goes on logically, like "the handle of the front door of the house" is Haustürklinke, literally housedoorhandle. This way it is possible to make up arbitrarily long words which becime ever more specific, just without a tonne of "of" in between.

But general usage is rarely more than 2 or 3 short words stuck together. Stuff like Vorratskasten and Notreserve or Fliegengitter. Well, ok, there's stuff like Insektenbekämpfungsmittel.

Rindfleischettiketierungsüberwachungsaufgabenübertragungsgesetz.

I don't know why I read the door handle as Haustürk-linke. Love me a house turkish leftist.

US Military would probably call it “ADCABC Cheetah” because indecipherable acronyms are much better.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 3 months ago

Sometimes they're funny though, like the ATTACK-EMS and the ASSRAMMING missiles

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 months ago

I'm pretty sure US Army would designate it the M1.

Settle down, Mrs. Cartman

[–] [email protected] 13 points 3 months ago

Offense or defense?

Because Chan Gailey or Wade Phillips

Depends on the radar sensitivity and the target acquisition software. More plane might not be more better if they can't lock on a target as small as a drone.

3,000 gray f-16s of uncle Sam.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 3 months ago

No no as an American 300 super tucanos slower speed, higher loiter time, lower cost.

Best I can do is 4600

Could I please choose one elephant-sized goose?

[–] [email protected] 15 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago) (1 children)

Depends on what their loadouts look like but probably the second option. 100 drones is a lot of small targets and I'm not quite certain F16s have the numbers of missiles. I could be wrong though.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Why are you bringing up F15s?

[–] [email protected] 5 points 3 months ago

Eternity doesn't let me see images in the post I'm replying to and I thought it had said F15

[–] [email protected] 10 points 3 months ago

How many anti-drone drones for the same money?

[–] [email protected] 9 points 3 months ago (1 children)
[–] [email protected] 4 points 3 months ago

Good choice, although the swiss aren't selling to Ukraine apparently (veto'ed several transfers). There are a few other CIWS systems which would also be good. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MYJ2KKnl6kA

Bring back the sparkvark. Or like, when they finally retire the bone, hollow out the airframe, toss in a few hundred MW of generators and let it saturation jam the entire timezone

[–] [email protected] 7 points 3 months ago

For the money? I'll take the underground, steel reinforced concrete bunker.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 3 months ago

With 100 drones all I need is one queen, and they will all try to follow her to mate with her.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 3 months ago

All at once, or spread out over a period of time? Because I'd take the F16s in most scenarios.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 3 months ago

How much drones could you have for that cost?
