Juan Carlos Pagotto, Argentinian libertarian senator, argued that some large families, facing extreme situations, may be forced to give up their children and that sanctioning them would leave the rest of the family unprotected. However, his inclusion of this exception in the opinion without prior discussion was widely criticized.

During last Thursday's session, the bill was approved unanimously with 63 votes in favor. However, the intervention of Senator Pagotto, president of the Commission, generated a strong rejection. Pagotto introduced modifications not previously discussed, seeking to exempt from punishment parents who surrender their children due to "state of necessity".

That this idea ever left someone's mouth, let alone be put to vote beggars belief. That said, selling unwanted children to pay bills is probably the most libertarian thing I can think of.

Can't libertarians keep it in their pants for one term? Why not give it a term and do that later, when everyone is obviously happy with four years of your policies?
