I suspect that big names like Deadpool and Wolverine will probably still get butts in the seats. But I'm not sure it will change the general burnout I hear people have been having with the superhero movie genre.

Though.. I might be a biased. Personally I never really got the appeal of going to see all these superhero movies that were getting released.
A superhero movie every now and then is fun, but I've always thought that Marvel was overdoing it quite a bit with the sheer quantity of them.

[–] [email protected] 12 points 1 month ago (3 children)

It's not superhero fatigue. That's dumb.
All they need is an actual good movie for it to be the biggest marvel movie in a long time.

[–] [email protected] 28 points 1 month ago (2 children)

The fatigue comes from boiling it down to a formula they kept repeating instead of allowing for talent to have their own voice.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 1 month ago

Exactly. They stopped making good movies.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Well, in this one the talent had a big hand in bringing this whole movie together, didn’t they? RR helped write it, he executive produced it, his production company, Maximum effort is producing it. His chosen yes-man director is directing. I work in the production world, he’s a major creative power.

[–] [email protected] 17 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Nah, there's definitely an element of fatigue. I used to watch superhero movies pretty religiously, even renting movies I missed before watching the new avengers flick. I even went to see Infinity War day one, and it was such a shock that I remember sitting in the car in silence on the way home (though I did cue up Snow in Summer from the NieR soundtrack... IYKYK). After Endgame, though... It was like a switch flipped. I had just watched this big, amazing payoff film that celebrated nearly a decade of cinema, had highs and lows, I watched actors and characters I had followed for years giving their goodbyes... It was a big, emotional moment, and the feeling I had afterwards was like the end of Thanksgiving dinner where you've finished your slice of pie and are enjoying the warm and fuzzy feelings. In other words, I was full.

So when Marvel kept producing more movies at the same pace as before, it was like the end of Thanksgiving dinner, except now the host is starting to bring out another pie and putting a slice in front of me, and now I'm side-eyeing it and trying to find a polite excuse to say no and go the fuck home.

Infinity War and Endgame are arguably their last real good movies. There's a couple others, but that's when they really committed to The Formula and lost quality.

[–] [email protected] 11 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Yeah, I won't deny the quality has gone down, too. Marvel's biggest mistake was thinking they could keep the gravy train rolling past endgame. They SHOULD have let it rest and given the creatives some time to cook and plan a new arc, but instead they pushed forward before they were ready and are paying dearly for it.

It's the same damn mistake they made with the star wars sequel trilogy--if they had sat on it for a year or two, hashed out a coherent overarching plot, and let it cook, we would've gotten something better than "Somehow, Palpatine returned." Hell, if they needed something immediately, they could have brought in Timothy Zahn to adapt the Thrawn books. Instead they went off half-cocked and gave us a barely-coherent retread of the original trilogy.

100% agree. You said it perfectly

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

it's almost like they told their saga that took 10 years but forgot to tell the studio. the story ended its like a TV show that kept going like we all know scrubs ended at season 8 but the big wigs were like "We can do season 9, right? " Right now they are running on all momentum and no direction or vision and if they didn't have those they should have stopped for a bit till they got them.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 month ago

I agree. I would happily pay for a movie ticket to watch something that had the spirit and intelligence of Logan or Joker, but I doubt that's going to happen anytime soon. I'm tired of having my intelligence insulted.

I recently decided to rewatch all the Marvel movies, because I'm boring, and after Guardians it took a pretty big turn.

Going from the more gritty drama with some funny one liners ever so once in awhile, to let's see how many one liners and nonchalant comedy we can put in.

Then after Endgame they ramped that shit up

[–] [email protected] 17 points 1 month ago (2 children)

I feel like the character differences between the heroes have vanished. Now they're all just Deadpool's personality but with different powersets

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 month ago

Exactly! That's what I saw as well. Like they saw how successful Deadpool was and thought we should do the same, just with less violence and vulgarity, and have them all be that way.

I really liked guardians of the galaxy. There is something about the settings and colours and everything just feels right as a standalone movie. I rewatch it every now and then. All the other disney slop i usually turn off pretty soon, because i remember why they are bad. The last thor movies are especially weird, they are like a parody of a good movie. Love and thunder i think it was reminds me of that "meet the spartans" movie for some reason. I'm not even sure if i watched that one.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 month ago

Yeah the last two were done by Taika Waititi, and if you've seen any of his other movies its on par with that directing style.

Imo Thor Ragnarok was the best standalone Thor movie, even if they completely changed the character.

The Love and Thunder one just felt like a repeat of Ragnarok in a lot of ways.

As much as I'm quite excited to see this film, should we really listen to a studio head promoting his own film? 😄

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 month ago

Hey guys remember how bad our movies are? Yeah, this one is shit too, but please watch it anyway.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Well… I’m REALLY fucking excited for it. Absolutely loved Deadpool 1 & 2. I’m probably going to see this three times when it comes out.

But turn around the slump? Doubt it. Not on its own. It can’t hope to fix the deeper problems Marvel created for itself, like overextending on the TV shows.

Marvel basically needs to die and be reborn. And despite what the trailer says, I don’t think Deadpool’s their Jesus.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 month ago

Hell, just take a 5 year break. Give people time to miss it.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 month ago

South Park nailed the Disney 'panderverse' perfectly. Deadpool movies are usually the opposite of that.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 month ago

The bar is set pretty low lately. I think it will be fun if they kept the producer/studio interference down.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 month ago (2 children)

I'm interested in the movie and plan to watch it eventually but I have no desire to ever enter a movie theater again. The experience just sucks compared to home. Sorry Hollywood.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

You're 98% right but every now and again it's still worth it, at least in IMAX; Dune and Dune 2 for example were absolutely incredible.

Nissan al gabe

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 month ago

I did not care for dune.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 month ago

I thought the same thing. I'll watch it at home when i'm in the mood, then i can turn it off and do something else when it blows.

Didn't wolverine kill dead pool in the last movie they were in?

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 month ago

Did you see the stinger after Deadpool 2? They handled that issue by showing it's a different Deadpool.

Wasn't that weapon X? Is he colonically Deadpool? I didn't read much of the comic.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 month ago

I don't think butt-stuff really comes into it.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Its dead pool. Its literally the same actor too. It was his first marval movie

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Deadpool wouldn't die from mere decapitation in fairness but yeah....I think it's 'alternative reality deadpool' (lazy writing)

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)
[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Apparently he can go down to a single cell 🤷

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 month ago

Well that's one way to do taxidermy of yourself.

Wait, his body grows back new skin with his old scars still visible?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 month ago

I'm not gonna rewatch it right now, but IIRC there's either a mid- or post-credit scene wherein the decapitated head opens its eyes and looks at the camera. Cutting his head off would not kill Deadpool, for crying out loud!
