Shitpoltle has bland overpriced food! Why anyone likes it I'll never understand.

It used to be good. But they've been spiraling downwards for the last decade and some change.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I feel like it was good around 2012-2014, last time I had it in 2019 I got food poisoning.

I feel like it was good 2004-2010… at least those were my golden years there. The pork was still actually good, and their chips and guac were so bomb. Now their chips are just so sad, both in flavor and texture.

I bet it would take far fewer parameters to make an LLM that just talked shit about literally anything that came up.

I often feel the need to remind people Panda Express exists.

They don't pay me to say that. They just give me a big ass plate of tasty food for a decent price and it's simple enough for my American brain to order it.

Almost anywhere that you can find a Panda Express, you can find a mom and pop Chinese takeout restaurant that offers basically the same dishes (and more), but will be tastier, cheaper, and give you a ton of food for the money.

I don't care that Panda Express exists because there's no need for it to.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 month ago

%100 agreed. Panda is expensive and doesn't give you a bunch like they used to. Mom and pop Chinese places are awesome

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 month ago

I wish. All the less expensive Chinese takeout joints near me are awful. Like Mongolian beef with white onions level of awful.

Panda's also gone down hill a lot since the pandemic. Their portion sizes are smaller now and the quality isn't there. Like it's ok but literally every Chinese place I've eaten at has better food.

[–] [email protected] -3 points 1 month ago

I only found out about them after the pandemic and still like it.

I very much dislike Panda Express, it's just American themed Chinese food. I find their food generally bland and a little overpriced. But a lot of people love it, so I guess they're doing something right.

Mexican food is also generally pretty good for portion sizes. Find a smaller establishment and get a burrito, and you'll probably have leftovers. Don't go somewhere like Costa Vida (they're fine, but kind of bland), find a mom&pop that's well lit and it'll probably be pretty American friendly while being decently good. The non-well lit places are my favorite because they're often more authentic (instead of having to ask for lengua or cabesa, it's right on the menu) and usually have soccer games playing, but the counter staff's English may be a bit more rough. Look for a well-stocked salsa bar and jugs of differently colored liquid on the counter and you'll know you've found the right place.

Yeah, I've been there like 2-3 times, and have been disappointed every time. Costa Vida is way better and still pretty mediocre imo, but it has that "Subway" style ordering you'll get at Chipotle, and I guess some people like that.

If you want Mexican, find a place with a well stocked salsa bar, counter service, and jugs of differently colored liquid on the counter, bonus points for multiple TVs playing soccer viewable from anywhere in the seating area. You'll get much better food for the same or less than Chipotle and you'll have to make an effort to finish everything.

When I want Mexican, I just go to a Mexican restaurant. Or the taco truck at the end of my street. Taco truck is the best deal, shitpoltle is around the same price as a real Mexican joint.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 month ago

Friends don't let friends go to Chipotle.

My favorite Mexican place is closer than Chipotle and has amazing tacos. You order at the counter, go to the salsa bar, and then your food is probably ready. It's really fast, really good, and the kitchen is completely open so you can watch them make everything if you want (they're really fast).

And yeah, taco trucks rock. I don't live in the city, so my options are pretty limited as far as food trucks go. But good Mexican restaurants are easier to find than Chipotle.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 month ago

It's a solid deal compared to many options and if cooked properly, it's definitely not bland

Prices going up

Twice the e.coli!

Pancheros is where it's at.

A respectful amount…

I fuckin love chipotle. Fight me.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Why tho?

Any local Mexican place will make a much better burrito, and probably for less. I have like 5 within the same range as my nearest Chipotle, so it's not like they're hard to find...

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Will they make fun of me for ordering a barbacoa burrito bowl with extra lettuce? Getting rid of the burrito shell removes a good chunk of calories, and I always feel like local places look down on me when I customize my order to shave calories 😕

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

I doubt they offer barbacoa bowls in the same sense that you're thinking. In fact, I rarely see the term "barbacoa," which refers to the method of cooking (baked underground). Most Barbacoa style meats are either "asado" (usually beef, or "barbacoa de res") or "birria" (beef or goat). Cochinita is the closest you'll find to what "Mexican" places call "pork barbacoa," which is really just pulled pork with a sauce (I highly doubt they cook it in a barbacoa). But try out asado and birria, you'll probably like them, and they're much more common than cochinita.

A good Mexican place will have a variety of meats, not just "chicken, pork, or beef," but variations on each. They usually give a simple set of options for their salads, but you can probably pick any of their taco meats (suadero, carnitas, al pastor, etc) to have with it if you want.

If your primary concern is calories, get corn tortillas, which are whole grain, have fewer calories than flour, and are are high in fiber (so they'll help you feel full on less). A good Mexican place will make their own tortillas or get them fresh from a local tortilliera, so they'll be way better than the crap at the store.

Thank you! This info makes me a lot more willing to try out the next authentic Mexican place I find 😊

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 month ago

Yeah, no worries! And most of the people behind the counter are super helpful, so feel free to ask questions.

I recommend trying corn tacos and get one of each flavor they have. Once you know what you like, ask if you can put that on another dish on their menu, they'll probably be cool with it.

Burritos suck get a salad.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 month ago

Burritos don't suck, but they're pretty mid.

Corn tacos loaded with veggies from the salsa bar are where it's at. Corn tortillas are high in fiber, whole grain, and way more delicious than flour tortillas imo (and they're probably freshly made). Throw on some pickled peppers, shredded lettuce, an interesting salsa, and some pico de gallo or something and it's probably healthier than most salads you'll get at "Mexican" places.

Even after working there I still love their food
