I dont think I can on Lemmy or I would. I'm down to block them individually as I see them tho.
News from fediverse
@[email protected] thanks for you insight, friend.π
Unfortunately I didn't think about platforms like Lemmy when creating this. I don't know much about Lemmy.π¬
I don't even know how this post is viewed there since I didn't mention a specific community.
Is there a federated feed like on Mastodon and other microblogging softwares?π€
It looks like on here it was posted to [email protected]
I dont know much else. Something with the account or community addresses being tagged. But yes there is a feed. Its like reddit sort of.
@[email protected] ohh...that's interesting...π€
That's an Mbin community so I wonder if they have something in the code to pull stuff based on hashtags.
Thanks for the quick response!π
I haven't seen any threads posts, but if one pollutes my feed then I will absolutely block it. Short form and vertical videos suck.
@[email protected] well...threads is a microblogging platform like Mastodon or X. While there could be videos like that there, it's not the main feature of the platform like TikTok or Youtube Shorts.
How, as a single user, can I block threads?
@[email protected] tbh, I'm not sure how it works from Lemmy...π³
On Mastodon, you would have to see a users profile from threads and click the "..." Menu, in that menu there's an option to "block this domain"
I only use Lemmy for one specific community I passively moderate, so I'm mostly unknowledgeable how Lemmy works for things outside of Lemmy.
I am even unsure how to read this very post from Lemmy since I didn't post it to a community.π¬
I will boost your post so hopefully you can get an answer on whether or not it's possible for you.
@[email protected] Nah, maybe some of my friends who are too hesitant to use Mastodon will use Threads, so Iβll be able to interact with them in my own space. π
(Off topic: howβd you post to mastodon and lemmy at the same time? π³)
@[email protected] well...I didn't...at least not on purpose.
Apparently Mbin, or at least fedia.io, uses hashtags to make posts in communities.
I added the hashtags and it went without my knowledge or intention.ππ€·ββοΈ
@[email protected] Ohh thatβs interesting! I might check out Mbin. Just setup a PieFed account as well.
@[email protected] it's pretty neat!
The original creator seems like a decent enough person and from my point of view, looks like he's doing it in a very admirable way by not "holding the keys to the castle" for lack of a better term. Multiple people have merge control for PRs and such. It's pretty cool.
We had an unfortunate misunderstanding a few weeks ago, but I'd hope that we have corrected that and can leave it in the past and move on.
I havenβt blocked it yet
@[email protected] thanks for replying, friend.
I have not either yet.
This latest update gives me hope that it'll eventually happen, but they are going slower than a fucking sloth...π€¦ββοΈ
I'm waiting to see if they're gonna try to pull some asshattery.
I know what's theoretically possible with AP and it's nothing that I can't undo by blocking their ass, so I'd like to see them try to fuck this up....
Speaking seriously, my instance has already preemptively defederated from threads so thereβs nothing left to do for me. Given your username, Iβm guessing youβre running your own masto instance so youβre set as well. Really, thereβs nothing sneaky to be done. If they decide to make an instance and download all of the personally identifiable information on the lemmyverse, thereβs nothing that can be done about it. I know far less about how much personally identifiable information leaks to other masto instances, but if itβs similar, building an advertising profile and ignoring mastodon proper may well be the strategy.
@[email protected] it cannot be done. They can only get anything that's already public on your profile, nothing more. Emails and IP addresses aren't shared, and no advertising cookies are ever grabbed from Fediverse that I've ever seen.
They can allow companies to make accounts and make posts that are essentially ads, but it cannot be targeted across AP and companies can already do that if they wish on Mastodon.
Your profile name, profile pic, bio, and public posts are what they can get from AP.
One of the reasons I move to a single user instance ... I don't block threads
Hugz & xXx
i specifically chose my instance because it has them defederated.
@[email protected] nope because dor us here in europe the fediverse function within threads is. ot active
@emaechler ahhh...that's true.
Unfortunately that's due to GDPR and their inability to insure the deletion of data on request.π¬
However, on Fedi, you can still see, follow, and reply to Threads users from other countries if you aren't blocking them.
So this post is meant more of like "do you have the intention to block threads?"
Like a lot of people have very valid reasons like they're concerns for moderation and things which is, of course, very valid.
But if your intention is to not block threads right now you should vote no.
@[email protected] why should we block threads? the posts in the fediverse are public - anyone can read them with an rss reader - so there's no point...
@[email protected] some are worried about getting harassed. LGBTQ folks are among some I've seen that are worried.
@[email protected] stupid people find always a way to harass others - and the fediverse has the same insane user as twitter facebook etc β¦
@[email protected] yes, but moderation on the smaller instances is way better because of the small userbase compared to Threads with 200m+ that I can imagine is harder to moderate, even for a bigger company, things slip through and I understand not wanting to be called slurs because of your sexual preference/race/religion etc.
It's their choice after all. All I can do is listen and respect their decision.π€·ββοΈ
@[email protected] yes - i will not block it but i am admin from a single user instance π€£π€£ and yes i dont see the point of blockingβ¦. but perhaps i am playing this social media game too long and have a thik skin π€£π€£
Is there an instance I can sign up to that hasn't blocked it?
One of the reasons I run my own (single-user) pyfedi instance is so I remain empowered to make this choice on my own.
I'm not preemptively blocking Threads but I haven't decided yet - I'll leave the default alone and take a wait-and-see attitude.
@[email protected] Essentially single user instance... Well, less "single user" than I expected, as there is "activity" from one account as of about 2 weeks ago.
@jigmedatse me?
If so, they're both me. The other is an unused account, that I keep logged in, that I made to attach to relay.fedi.buzz which helps me get content to my instance and helps my content go out. It's called Fedibuzzdummy cause it's a dummy account for Fedi buzz.
The only other account here is the guy that helped me set the instance up over a year ago and hasn't been online since that day.
@[email protected] Oh, I meant my instance is basically a single user instance. And blocked at the instance level.
There may be reason to reverse that, but it was based on activity that hit my instance, not just political.
@[email protected] ohhh...I was SO confusedπ
Sorry.π€¦ββοΈ
You do you. Block whoever you wish for whatever reason you wish. It's not my place to tell anyone who to block and not block.
I'm just curious about the stats.π€·ββοΈ
@[email protected] Hey, no problem with being confused. I was just letting you know of what the situation was here. No criticism, no suggesting anyone do anything in any direction. Though honestly, I'd be interested to see if Threads might be worth considering unblocking. Or .social (unrelated).
@[email protected] Well, that really depends on you and if you feel you would be safe from harassment, if such things should occur.
I know lots of LGBTQA folks have that worry specifically. I am not familiar with Meta's moderation, but I've seen it said many times that it's not good.
Take that how you wish. I don't have such issues, so I feel safe. But I wouldn't recommend anyone who is a part of those types of communities to let their guard down.
@[email protected] Yeah, I get enough already with instances that shouldn't really end up being sources of that kind of hate...
@[email protected] yeah...could it be .social?π€¦ββοΈ
@[email protected] .social mastodon.social. Sorry that wasn't clear.
@[email protected] yeah...that's what i figured.π€¦ββοΈ
Sorry you had to go through that, friend.π
@[email protected] mastodon.social wasn't that bad. It was just historically that size of instance, it's very difficult to have good moderation. And stuff was taking more than 90 days for some stuff.
I gave it that kind of time, because being a big instance, it meant that it was harder to justify blocking the instance.
@[email protected] yeah, I totally understand that. I'm a bit worried myself of being blocked by them.
I've already been blocked by Eugen personally for criticizing his development strategy and not focusing on much needed moderation tools...π
I have almost 300 friends there so I would be making a lot of noise if it happened.π¬
@[email protected] It wasn't really even close to that. But one I know and really miss seeing in this timeline kind of sucks. But another instance, I got blocked, because... Well I criticized the blind use of block lists, and tried to discuss what can be problematic about that.
That instance has had other cases where blocks have been personal, and knocking connections blindly.
@[email protected] oof. Yeah, I was on Oliphant's Tier 3 blocklist before it got decommissioned with the reason of "Ableist" which is obviously bullshit. I have ADHD and i'm slightly autistic. There's no ableist in me.
They put me on there because I sometimes post AI art.
Which is all fine and dandy, but don't lie!π€¦ββοΈ
@[email protected] I get pissed at people posting AI art, but honestly it's mostly the people who they don't really get why it's problematic.
I keep getting the "transphobic" thing. Which I go, "um what even are you talking about," in part because I am aware it could be that some stuff could come across as transphobic.
Woke up to that today.
I've also had the "ableist" thing as well. The main case, was when I said, "don't assume someone is being malicious..." citing Hanon's Razor.
@[email protected] I don't block threads on my instance. I limit them because I think as they build out more integration, spammers will begin posting from there, given that it will take longer to remove them on Threads than on a Mastodon server. I have no plans to ever block Threads.
But, I have unlimited many Threads accounts individually, as exceptions, that I know are real and safe, and will do so on request.
@[email protected] that makes sense. I'm on my own here, as you know, so I don't feel I have much risk here.
I can definitely understand being concerned for their moderation practices though. That's been one of the most wide concerns.
Hmmm. No. Not yet. I'll cogitate though.
@[email protected] unfortunately, being on Lemmy, I'm not sure that you could.π¬ I didn't think about Lemmy when creating this because I was not aware that Mbin makes posts based on hashtags. I'm very unknowledgeable about that part of Fedi.
I think the only way you could, as a Lemmy user, would be to migrate or sign up on a different instance that blocks it for you.π€·ββοΈ
