Being stuck underneath someone who wants to torture you with a weapon while their friends cheer them on is a tragedy. Then when you hear about that shit happening to your neighbor after 20% of Koreans died during a war, suddenly the guy with nuclear weapons who says he's against that sort of thing seems like a nice guy to you.

When a socialist state needs soldiers, it doesn't seem like they need conscripts. People are willing and able, for the most part. It's only when a state loses its socialist characteristics and begins to prioritize expansion over stability that we see things break down.
dprk still has to conscript to this day to deal with the threat of an american military base on their border
DPRK isn't doing active combat operations. The handful of DPRK mercenaries serving abroad are almost certainly there voluntarily.
They've got mandatory civil service, but that's very different from going to the front lines to kill or be killed.
Are they gonna start recruiting women, and children at some point?

they're doing everything they can to avoid lowering the draft age down from 25, both because they're needed for future population growth and also there's just barely any of them anyways so ruining what little bleak future you have left to extend the war by like a year at the most doesnt seem worth it yet
