I think I remember years ago seeing a comment somewhere that perfectly descriped this behavior (probably :reddit-logo:):
It came from a story of a pastor or something that was famous for hating gay people and was later caught having gay sex at an airport or something. Basically the reason people that are obsessed with hating a group like gay people is because they are constantly thinking about gay sex. They can't get it out of their heads because it makes them horny but they are taught to hate it so they are constantly :frothingfash: about it and sound like lunatics.
No surprise that people that are constantly hating trans people are because they can't stop thinking about how hot they are.

The most homophobic person I know in my biological family talks about gay people more than most gay people talk about gay people. back in the day your government name wasn't associated with your online handle like that. it was very much not real a lot of the time because you could just walk away or make a new account. nobody knows you're a dog on the internet, after all.
racism, sexism, etc would still be felt as real by the people subjected to it even if you were passively not indicating your gender or minority status of course, but again it used to be possible to just leave or you could even get away with flaming right back in ways that are much less possible today, especially if your job is publicly online.
