The Giant Mine just outside of Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, Canada is one of the country's largest recognized environmental liabilities. The mine's 100 plus year history illustrates the continuity between resource colonialism in the late 19th/early 20th century and neoliberalism at the turn of the millennium.

There were several gold rushes in northern Canada/US in the late 19th century, such as the Klondike. The Giant gold strike on was first discovered by settlers about the same time as the Klondike, but as Giant is on Great Slave Lake (named for an Anglicization of the name of local peoples, not after slavery) instead of the Pacific Ocean, it is much less accessible and didn't take off like the Klondike. Parallel with displacement of local Yellowknives Dene people https://ykdene.com/, the town of Yellowknife sprung up around small mining operations through the 30s. It wasn't until after WW2 that the mine was developed at a large scale. Starting operation in 1948, Giant was owned by a Canadian mining conglomerate through the 80s, then some Australians, and for the last ten years of its operating life, by Americans, who went bankrupt and abandoned the property in 1999. The Canadian federal government is responsible for the site and its remediation now, similar to the way the EPA has Superfund sites in the USA.

The project is infamous for poisoning the people and environment of the surrounding area through arsenic poisoning. The ore at giant is arsenopyrite, an arsenic sulphide mineral that often contains gold. Roasting it in large furnaces or kilns releases the gold as well as fine arsenic trioxide dust. The most infamous arsenic poisoning incident was in 1951 when a Yellowknives Dene toddler in died after eating contaminated snow in the fallout area, 2 kilometers from the processing mill's smokestack. Over the years, improvements to the mill reduced the amount of toxic dust released to the environment. This is better than blasting it into the air wildly, but meant that the site accumulated hundreds of thousands of tonnes of arsenic trioxide dust that they chucked in empty mine workings underground. Unfortunately, arsenic trioxide dissolves in water as easily as sugar and so represents a tremendous risk to groundwater and waterbodies nearby, like Great Slave Lake and Yellowknife's water supply.

Arsenic issues contributed to labour disputes as well. In 1991 the union workers of the plant went on strike, refusing management's demand to reduce their salary and wanting better safety measures for workers . The company brought in Pinkertons and strikebreakers, backed by RCMP thugs. The situation escalated, culminating in a bomb planted on a train track deep in the mine. When it was triggered, it killed 6 scabs and 3 Pinkertons. For the next year, the RCMP interrogated mine workers, their family and community without determining who did it, supporting the company in their refusal to sign a new contract until an arrest was made. Finally a worker named Roger Warren confessed to doing it alone and was sentenced to life in prison. He was released in 2014 and died in 2017.

Since 1999, the site has been the responsibility of the Canadian federal government and is being every so gradually remediated. Operated through what are effectively private-public partnership contracts, environmental engineering companies are attempting to clean up and isolate the huge amounts of arsenic trioxide dust. The concept is move the dust into specially ventilated chambers of the underground mine, where it is frozen in place and thus prevented from leaching into groundwater. Active remediation is supposed to be finished in about 15 years at a cost of $1 billion CAD, but will surely take longer and cost more than this. Also, freezing material in place will definitely work because the climate isn't changing, and the Canadian north is definitely not seeing extreme levels of temperature rise.

After active works are complete, the site will require perpetual care.

Abdelaali Hassani Cherif, the leader of Algerian Hamas the second biggest party in the People's National Assembly of Algeria posted his party's statement on the U.S. elections.

Translated by me with a headache."The world has followed the events of the U.S. elections and its results with great interests consider the existence and the heavy tactical weight of the United States of America in the international and domestic issues, and so the hot discussion on the issues that occupy the American society, and the leaning of its foreign affairs in the rapidly changing political economical and security issues and the American role in them, and without the official strong and ongoing support to the zionist entity Israel would've reached its end, as the Palestinian cause has witness a a strong return in international agendas and a big arrival from the holy Al-Aqsa flood battle, and it also had a giant role in the continuation of the Russo-Ukrainian war, and it's not hidden to anyone its economic and technological battle against China about Taiwan and is its situation from Iran and the Iraqi and Lebanese issues and the American intervention in the African Sahel and so the fight with North Korea and controlling its allies in the Euorpean Union and the Arab gulf and these issues have created never ending discussions about the American role and has made the elected American president the intrest and in the view of all the countries of the world.
The victory of the republicans and the return of the ex-president Donald trump brings without doubts direct changes on all the international and domestic issues and it's not just a victory of national competition, and in another hand confirms the proven principle in who has the power to conserve strategic American interests and who makes America first and who conserves the control of Uncle Sam on the world and on the resources of power wealth and control over international security, and in spite of the competition between the candidates the American foundation is the owner of the final decision of the interests of the U.S. first and conserving the interests of its allies and their leanings, and the victory of Trump in the election race has confirmed what we pointed at earlier at different events that the failures of traditional parties in the west will offer opportunities for the rise of the radical right and that the new approaches and it exceeded the prevailing norms in westerns and American societies, and with what the Biden administration left in discussions of how to manage different issues, the American society and its different institutions restrict its priorities on the success of the U.S. and the importance of the supremacy of its values that were founded on it internationally.
What has to be done in our Islamic and Arabic world has to be preserving our values and independence and unity and assisting our just causes and on top of it is our central cause, it unites us and our nations must make the liberation of Palestine and its assisting our central cause with priorities that can't be delayed, and it is what will drawn our nations' future and renaissance because fighting over multiple western leanings including American dominance doesn't care about our causes or our situation as much as it cares of its own interests with us, and it's a fault to think that Democrats or Republicans can be trusted or are trusted to change their policies towards our Islamic and Arab world, they're both of the same and they're united by the interests of America first then Israel second"

Also his party drafted a new law punishing working, trading or communicating with any Israeli institute, weather in the occupied territories or out of it, the punishment being 5 to 10 years in prison, a 20 million DZD fine (150k USD) and doubling if the person is a politician, I don't expect it to be approved though (private companies being corrupt).

Russian Senate Ratifies Military Treaty With North Korea - Telesur English

Article

According to Ukraine, North Korea has already deployed around 11,000 soldiers in Russia. On Wednesday, the Russian Senate ratified the “Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Treaty” signed between Russia and North Korea in June, which includes a clause for mutual military assistance in the event of aggression.

According to this document, if one of the signatory parties is subjected to an armed attack, the other will immediately provide military and other forms of assistance.

Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean President Kim Jong-un signed the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Treaty during the Kremlin leader’s first visit to Pyongyang in nearly a quarter of a century.

The ratification of the treaty by the upper chamber of the Russian Parliament comes after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed the first encounters between his troops and North Korean soldiers.

“The first clashes with North Korean soldiers open a new chapter of instability in the world,” Zelensky said in a message to the nation, urging the international community to “do everything possible to ensure this Russian step to expand the war fails.”

According to Ukraine and some of its allies, North Korea has already deployed around 11,000 soldiers in Russia. Some of them are said to have joined Russian troops fighting the Ukrainian Army in the Russian region of Kursk, which has been partially occupied by Ukrainian forces since August.

Russia, which has so far neither confirmed nor denied the presence of North Korean troops on its territory, maintains that the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Treaty with North Korea is “defensive in nature and is not directed against the security of third countries.”

On european policy continuity between Biden and trump - tit for tat being "support whatever Chinese tariffs the US imposes and in exchange you get to step up on project ukraine". It's tough being a vassal.

I think the sucking wound that is the ukrainian state is too valuable to the US to meaningfully change course, but I am nevertheless curious how trump gets along with the various euro governments and leaders. The AfD Is likely to win in Germany in the spring - will they get along with trump or will they be more pissed about flushing their economic future away over ukraine?

Similarly, orban will be one to watch - he is friendly with China and trump, which may put him between scylla and charybdis. I bet Hungary gets upgraded to a turkey tier both-sides player over the next few years.

A four-star general who flew Black Hawk helicopters and served in Afghanistan, Richardson has frequently warned against Chinese and Russian security threats in the region during her three-year stint at Miami-based Southern Command, which ends on November 7.

In April, Richardson visited Ushuaia, Argentina’s southernmost city, where China had proposed building a port to supply the Antarctic. Following what Argentine media reported as strong lobbying from Washington, Buenos Aires opted instead for a US-led facility and also put on ice Chinese plans for a multi-use port 200km up the coast at Río Grande.

Richardson said she had been “absolutely worried” about the Chinese proposal in Ushuaia because of its strategic location close to the Strait of Magellan and the Drake Passage.

The general said she remained concerned about Chinese and Russian activity in Cuba, which has included building spy stations to eavesdrop on the US, and Russian warships visiting Havana. “It’s in the red zone for our homeland . . . We have a lot of nefarious and malign activity and we have no place for it in the Caribbean and Latin America.”

She has also tried to alert Latin American governments to the security risks of adopting 5G infrastructure from Chinese companies such as Huawei, which could open “back doors” into countries’ sensitive data and facilitate hacking or the theft of military or commercial secrets.

Huawei has said there is “no comprehensible evidence or plausible scenarios” in which its technology would pose a security risk.

“Digital authoritarianism — that’s absolutely what China is doing,” she said. “You’ve got a Communist government selling these 5G solutions. They don’t respect the rights of their own people and we somehow think they will do that for [us]”.

The general accused Beijing of “holding countries at risk” in the region when they were desperate for technology, deepwater ports or energy investment. “This is how they get their hooks into the countries,” she said.

In August 2022, India and the US protested when the Yuan Wang 5, a Chinese naval vessel with antennas used for tracking and surveillance, docked at Sri Lanka’s Hambantota port. The Beijing-funded port was taken over by a Chinese company after Colombo defaulted on debt payments.

China denies the Yuan Wang 5 is a spy ship but agreed it would not conduct research while it was at Hambantota.

“The [Chinese] come in with big bags of cash and the BRI and they look like they’re saving the day because countries don’t have a choice,” she said.

“Strategic competition matters. Democracy is under attack and we have to be investing and competing on critical infrastructure projects for like-minded democracies.”

Denmark's Liberal Party wants to "double the sentences" for aggravated assault. Strongman party leader Troels Lund Poulsen claims to be "indignated" about violent criminals getting off too easy. He says he wants to double the sentences. He also say that he doesn't want to change maximum sentences. When asked about how he will reconcile those two conflicting statements he deflects.

When asked whether he believes tougher sentencing would lead to less violent crime he deflects and starts to talk about how it is about being fair to victims. When asked whether the proposal is intended to reduce violent crime or to make victims feel better he says it is about both. When asked once more if he believes it will reduce violent crime he goes back to avoiding to give anything resembling an answer.

Poulsen is confronted with the fact that prisons are already lacking capacity and has a shortage of prison guards. He dismisses this with idealist slogans about how it can't be right that their pig-headed fetish for putting people in prison should be constrained by material reality. He talks about how they will just "find the money" for more prisons.

The Liberal Party makes up one third of Denmark's ruling Social Democrat-led right-wing regime. The proposed increase in sentencing is made on behalf of the Liberal Party only and has received support from the far right.
