Welcome to c/news! Please read the Hexbear Code of Conduct and remember... we're all comrades here.

Rules:

-- PLEASE KEEP POST TITLES INFORMATIVE --

-- Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed. --

-- All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. --

-- If you are citing a twitter post as news please include not just the twitter.com in your links but also nitter.net (or another Nitter instance). There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/libredirect/ or archive them as you would any other reactionary source using e.g. https://archive.today/ . Twitter screenshots still need to be sourced or they will be removed --

-- Mass tagging comm moderators across multiple posts like a broken markov chain bot will result in a comm ban--

-- Repeated consecutive posting of reactionary sources, fake news, misleading / outdated news, false alarms over ghoul deaths, and/or shitposts will result in a comm ban.--

-- Neglecting to use content warnings or NSFW when dealing with disturbing content will be removed until in compliance. Users who are consecutively reported due to failing to use content warnings or NSFW tags when commenting on or posting disturbing content will result in the user being banned. --

-- Using April 1st as an excuse to post fake headlines, like the resurrection of Kissinger while he is still fortunately dead, will result in the poster being thrown in the gamer gulag and be sentenced to play and beat trashy mobile games like 'Raid: Shadow Legends' in order to be rehabilitated back into general society. --

Image is of the Herðubreið tuya in northeast Iceland, formed when ice sheets covered Iceland thousands of years ago. It's not really relevant to the Grindavik situation but I think they look neat. The title also doesn't make much sense but I saw the pun and took it.

Off in Iceland, different kinds of tunnels are causing problems. Underneath the town of Grindavik in southwestern Iceland, not far from the capital of Reykjavik, tens of thousands of earthquakes are portending the movement of magma in tunnels underneath the peninsula, which could breach the surface and cause an eruption. The 4000 residents of the town have been evacuated as the magma has risen to less than a kilometer below the surface.^TRG^

Icelandic volcanism is pretty fascinating, with the country sitting on the mid-Atlantic ridge, the birthing line of new oceanic crustal rock running right down the Atlantic ocean for many thousands of kilometers, as well as a hotspot, an upwelling of mantle material of debated origin which also feeds otherwise-inexplicable volcanism in the middle of tectonic plates, like Yellowstone and Hawaii.

An additional factor here is the presence of glaciers. When a volcano erupts underneath a glacier, the melting water cools the lava rapidly, causing features usually seen in volcanoes that erupt under the sea like pillow basalts, but also unique features like tuyas, which are steep-sided but flat-topped volcanoes. The rapid melting of water can also cause glacial floods called jökulhlaups.

Icelandic volcanoes have had significant regional and even global impacts in the past. In 2010, the volcano Eyjafjallajökull, which was a volcano covered by an ice cap, erupted and the ash cloud spread across Europe, causing airline disruption for about a month which caused nearly $2 billion in total losses for airline companies - though this seems pretty quaint compared to the pandemic's impact on airlines in retrospect. Back in the 1780s, the Laki volcano killed a quarter of the Icelandic population due to sulphur dioxide causing massive crop failure and cattle death. This eruption's impacts spread to Europe and beyond, causing notable worldwide temperature drops and thus crop failures and may well have been a contributing factor to the outbreak of the French Revolution, which obviously heralded the death of the feudal order and the eventual primacy of capitalism in its place. That being said, any eruption at Grindavik is very probably not going to have any significant worldwide impacts - there are over a hundred volcanoes already in Iceland, and regular climate change is doing a great job at causing mayhem right now anyway. It's also still possible that there won't be an eruption at all, at least not in the short to medium term.

Friendly reminder: when commenting about a news event, especially something that just happened, please provide a source of some kind. While ideally this would be on nitter or archived, any source is preferable to none at all given.

Examples of Ukrainian Nazis and fascists

Examples of racism/euro-centrism during the Russia-Ukraine conflict

Resources For Understanding The War

Defense Politics Asia's youtube channel and their map. Their youtube channel has substantially diminished in quality but the map is still useful.

Moon of Alabama, which tends to have interesting analysis. Avoid the comment section.

Understanding War and the Saker: reactionary sources that have occasional insights on the war.

Alexander Mercouris, who does daily videos on the conflict. While he is a reactionary and surrounds himself with likeminded people, his daily update videos are relatively brainworm-free and good if you don't want to follow Russian telegram channels to get news. He also co-hosts The Duran, which is more explicitly conservative, racist, sexist, transphobic, anti-communist, etc when guests are invited on, but is just about tolerable when it's just the two of them if you want a little more analysis.

On the ground: Patrick Lancaster, an independent and very good journalist reporting in the warzone on the separatists' side.

Unedited videos of Russian/Ukrainian press conferences and speeches.

Telegram Channels

Again, CW for anti-LGBT and racist, sexist, etc speech, as well as combat footage.

Pro-Russian

https://t.me/aleksandr_skif ~ DPR's former Defense Minister and Colonel in the DPR's forces. Russian language.

https://t.me/Slavyangrad ~ A few different pro-Russian people gather frequent content for this channel (~100 posts per day), some socialist, but all socially reactionary. If you can only tolerate using one Russian telegram channel, I would recommend this one.

https://t.me/s/levigodman ~ Does daily update posts.

https://t.me/patricklancasternewstoday ~ Patrick Lancaster's telegram channel.

https://t.me/gonzowarr ~ A big Russian commentator.

https://t.me/rybar ~ One of, if not the, biggest Russian telegram channels focussing on the war out there. Actually quite balanced, maybe even pessimistic about Russia. Produces interesting and useful maps.

https://t.me/epoddubny ~ Russian language.

https://t.me/boris_rozhin ~ Russian language.

https://t.me/mod_russia_en ~ Russian Ministry of Defense. Does daily, if rather bland updates on the number of Ukrainians killed, etc. The figures appear to be approximately accurate; if you want, reduce all numbers by 25% as a 'propaganda tax', if you don't believe them. Does not cover everything, for obvious reasons, and virtually never details Russian losses.

https://t.me/UkraineHumanRightsAbuses ~ Pro-Russian, documents abuses that Ukraine commits.

Pro-Ukraine

Almost every Western media outlet.

https://discord.gg/projectowl ~ Pro-Ukrainian OSINT Discord.

https://t.me/ice_inii ~ Alleged Ukrainian account with a rather cynical take on the entire thing.

Catastrophe unfolding now at al-Shifa hospital: I summarize comments of hospital director Dr. Muhammad Abu Salmiya, speaking to Al Jazeera Arabic about 30 minutes ago:

There are about 7,000 people under total siege inside al-Shifa compound, including 650 injured people, 45 dialysis patients and 36 premature babies.

A few hours ago one dialysis patient died and 4 are at imminent risk of death because no power for dialysis machines. Three premature babies died in recent days. Two injured persons died in recent hours due to lack of treatment.

There is no water, fuel or electricity. Israel broke the main water line into the hospital. There is no purified water to make the special formula for the babies, so they are using ordinary water and some have become sick with diarrhea, infections, fever.

There is no food. Children are starving and distressed. There is no medicine and the wounds of injured people are becoming horribly infected, some with maggots.

Hospital administrators tried to send a delegation to the occupation forces to ask for food, fuel, medicine and safe evacuation of the sick and injured but the Israelis refused to to talk to them.

The hospital is besieged from all sides by tanks and bulldozers. The bulldozers are destroying areas around the compound, but no one can see clearly what they are doing. Anyone who tries to move between hospital buildings is shot at by snipers or drones. There are hundreds of soldiers in the hospital compound searching all over and causing severe damage to hospital premises and equipment.

In the 48 hours the occupation forces have been inside the hospital or on its grounds not a single shot has been fired at them.

No one can leave the hospital or enter it. The situation is disastrous not just for people in Shifa but for anyone in Gaza City who is injured or becomes ill, because no one can reach the hospital and the hospital can't do anything for them anyway. Anyone who has a heart attack or a stroke at home will die.

Dr. Abu Salmiya says "We hold the world responsible" for what he calls a genocide. "We are waiting for slow death."

Keivan Cohen, 20, was shot dead in 2002 by a Palestinian sniper in the Gaza Strip. He was single and left no will. But at the urging of his parents, a sample of his sperm was taken two hours after his death and has been stored in a hospital since.

That's my go-to as well when a close one dies. First thing I think of really: "go fetch their gametes, the meat is getting cold".

When the family tried to gain access to the sperm, however, the hospital refused, on the ground that only a spouse could make such a request. Arguing that their son yearned to raise a family, his parents challenged that decision in court. And on Jan. 15, after a four-year legal battle, a Tel Aviv court granted the family’s wish and ruled that the sperm could be injected into a woman selected by Cohen's family.

This is insanity

Hamas could be hiding the fucking Death Star underneath Gaza, but that would still not change the fact that Israel is currently carrying out a genocide on the Palestinian people.

Bernie is now getting lapped by a Jewish representative from his own state.

Representative Becca Balint, D-Vt, on Thursday called for a ceasefire in the war between Israel and Hamas — a change in her position that comes more than a month after the conflict erupted.

Nitter

A different tweet said that "She is the first Jewish member of Congress to call for a ceasefire."

Edit

Bernie is such a coward that his last Gaza-related tweets are from 11 days ago - on the 5th.

So Norman Finkelstein went on fucking Candace Owens' "show", of all things. Aside from asking a couple inane "questions" that the Fink easily batted aside and used to just talk for extended periods, and making a couple ridiculous claims about herself and her audience like calling them "open-minded" or whatever shit, she mostly just let him talk (though he's also a pretty difficult guy to interrupt LOL).

All that's to say, even fashy girl with her "I like to give 'both sides' a chance" has Destiny beat at this point, both in his lame-ass "preparation" and apparently his genius strategy of just not showing up. 😂

Thread of pro-Palestinian activism in Taiwan: https://nitter.cz/aurorachaang/status/1725245240989077807

Funny part of the thread:

and then the mandarin speaking pro-palestine community seemed dominated by taiwanese people who lean pro-china and pro-unification - analogous to western tankies.

Tankies right yet again.

the mainstream taiwanese human rights ngo circle, which is traditionally progressive and pro-independence (what i consider 臺派), and has working relationships with politicians such as freddy lim, fan yun, and hung sun-han etc. has not been as active on this issue on an organisational level, especially as compared to how they rallied for ukraine.

I think it very strange how a separatist movement that has roots in Japanese fascist collaboration would be sympathetic towards other fascists. And it's also extraordinarily cringe for them to use 臺 when 台 is fine. 台 is simplified, but it's simplified that everyone in Taiwan uses. 臺 is only used on government documents or to prove a point about how "I'm not Chinese, I'm Taiwanese." Seriously, if you search for 臺灣 on Youtube, you just get a bunch of videos about Taiwan with 台灣 lol (Simplified is 台湾)

this means that almost all of the political and educational events on palestine have been organised by groups which are outside of this mainstream ngo bubble - namely, explicitly leftist/socialist groups. of these groups, new bloom is an outlier in that it is historically and vocally pro-independence (i’m part of new bloom, i won't deny that there's going to be bias here), where the others either focus predominantly on labour issues without having a china stance, or have developed a pro-china, pro-unification slant. at the very least, they include high profile individuals who have a history of being pro-unification.

NGOs just doing what their Western masters tell them to do and whining about getting out-organized by the evil campists.

Israeli popular sentiment — even amongst former liberals — is moving toward a Greater Nakba. Gaza is under Nakba pressures. So is the West Bank, as settler violence against Palestinians surges. Even a ‘liberal’ such as former opposition leader Lapid now agrees that ‘settlers’ in the occupied West Bank are not ‘settlers’ at all, since the land is but the ‘Biblical land of Israel’.

Nakba ‘ambitions’ are widening to South Lebanon (up to the Litani River) too. The radical members of Netanyahu’s government say Israelis will never return to the kibbutz adjacent to Lebanon, without Hezbollah’s removal from the border area.

So, the call is heard for "Israel" to ‘take’ Lebanon up to the Litani (a key water source) — and ‘serendipitously’ the Israeli air force has begun operating up to 40 kms inside Lebanon. Cabinet members now openly speak of the IOF needing to turn its attention to Hezbollah once Hamas has been ‘obliterated’.
...
Plainly, the White House is struggling to avoid the slide towards full regional war, as both the Lebanese front and the Iraqi front heats up: On Sunday, Iraqi movements again fired missiles at the American base in Shaddadi.

"Israel" is sensing the present crisis to be both an existential risk, but an ‘opportunity’ too – an opportunity to establish "Israel" across ‘its Biblical lands’ over the long term. There is no mistaking it -- this is the direction of travel of Israeli popular sentiment, from both Left and Right wings, to bloody eschatology.

I wonder if there was a point where someone in an intelligence agency in the UK or the US (I'd bet the former personally) started panicking in front of their monitoring screens when they saw that Bin Laden letter going viral and started to rush for a phone, or if it all happened organically as self-censorship and people from the guardian noticed their stats going insane on that single article and checked the referrer.

Ultimately I think it was the latter, because it seems to be going even more viral (like front page news) since the removal. They should've let it die down.

White House says has ‘information’ that Hamas uses hospitals in Gaza, presents no evidence

White House spokesman John Kirby said Washington “has information that Hamas and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad use some hospitals in the Gaza Strip, including al-Shifa, and tunnels underneath them to conceal and support their military operations and to hold hostages”.

He said members of the two Palestinian factions “operate a command and control node from al-Shifa in Gaza City” and store weapons there.

Kirby presented no evidence to back up the White House’s claims, which echo allegations made – also without evidence – by Israel.

Earlier, a senior Hamas official rejected accusations that the group is using al-Shifa Hospital for military purposes.

Doctors and medical teams who work at al-Shifa also have rejected the idea that Palestinian fighters are embedded at the hospital, accusing Israel of using the accusations to try to justify its unlawful attacks against medical facilities.

IDF claims to have found an AK-47 behind an MRI scanner

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2023/11/15/israel-gaza-latest-news-updates-hamas-palestine-day-40-live/

I don't know about you, but anywhere remotely in the vicinity of an MRI scanner is the absolute last place I would put a gun. Those things can rip earrings off your head.

Did some searching and found an instance of a cop who didn't take an MRI seriously:

https://www.ajronline.org/doi/full/10.2214/ajr.178.5.1781092

Once the officer was inside the MR suite, the gun was pulled from his hand as he attempted to place the gun on top of a cabinet 3 ft (0.9 m) away from the magnet bore. The gun was immediately pulled into the bore, where it struck the left side and spontaneously discharged a round into the wall of the room at the rear of the magnet. Fortunately, no one was injured. Although the gun struck the magnet bore, only minimal cosmetic damage occurred to the magnet itself. The MR unit had full functional capability immediately after the gun discharged. The weapon's thumb safety was reportedly engaged when the gun discharged.

What do you call it when a foreigner thinks that they know more about your own country than you? I'm arguing with someone like this right now. They seem to be a leftist from Scandinavia, but they think that Chris Hani was more popular than Nelson Mandela (even though their own sources say otherwise), deny the existence of Mandela's South African Communist Party membership (something the party itself has confirmed), act as if Ronnie Kasrils and Thabo Mbeki are still members of the ANC, and argue that Mbeki was an efficient technocrat and not a neoliberal austerity driven fool. They've posted a bunch of news articles from foreign websites that they didn't even read! Honestly infuriating. I probably agree with this person on most things, but they've invented some fictional reality about South Africa that is only possible if you've never lived here. Not even in matters of opinion, just denying facts that don't agree with their view of history.

The director of the WHO

Today @WHO led a very high risk @UN assessment mission to Al-Shifa hospital in #Gaza. The team saw a hospital no longer able to function: no water, no food, no electricity, no fuel, medical supplies depleted. Given this deplorable situation and the condition of many patients, including babies, health workers requested support to evacuate patients who cannot receive lifesaving care there anymore.

We are working with partners to develop an urgent evacuation plan and ask for full facilitation of this plan. We continue to call for protection of health and of civilians. The current situation is unbearable and unjustifiable.

Ceasefire. NOW.
