Title is a reference to Resistance imagery about how Israeli soldiers will enter Gaza alive but leave it in coffins - the same is true for American soldiers in the Middle East if the regional war expands.

The image is of the Fattah-1 Iranian hypersonic ballistic missile, which its creators boast can overcome any missile defense system on the planet, has a range of 1400 kilometers (and thus Iran can strike Israel), and has a terminal impact velocity of Mach 13.

Dozens of American soldiers have been injured and 3 have been killed on a base in the Middle East. There has been confused reports about whether the attack was on Syrian territory or Jordan's - the Al-Tanf base is in Syria, but Tower-22 in Jordan is another base that helps supply Al-Tanf, and Tower-22 is the one that is alleged to have been hit. These is the first confirmed deaths of American troops since the conflict began, though it's not likely that this is actually the first deaths after hundreds of drone/missile strikes throughout the region on American bases, unless you think American soldiers are having extremely timely heart attacks just after a missile hits.

The attack is certainly impactful, though it does also have considerably symbolism. Courtesy of John Helmer:

The operational success of the strike for the attackers is strategic. Tower-22 is a logistics, supply, and rear guard post for the Al-Tanf base which US troops are operating thirty kilometres north across the border in Syria. The attack demonstrates that both Tower-22 and Al-Tanf, Jordan and Syria, are newly vulnerable to weapons which the US forces have failed to detect and neutralize. Just as significantly, the massive US airbase called Muwaffaq Salti, 230 kilometres west across Jordan, is also vulnerable now.

It indicates that Iran now possesses Russian expertise in countering American equipment:

“This is a significant accomplishment,” one of the sources said. “Was the bypassing of the US air defence system at Tower-22 pulled off with Russian assistance? US bases generally rely on the C-RAM [Counter Rocket, Artillery and Mortar] system. It was sent to Ukraine last year where the Russians have been learning to defeat it. What now of American EW [electronic warfare]? They’ve been doing a fair job of knocking drones down up to now. It seems a ‘coincidence’ that, not a week after the meetings in Moscow with Arabs and Iranians, we see this success. It’s a success the circumstances of which, we can be sure, Biden and Austin are not keen to advertise.”

I am putting my take on the table right now: I am 99% certain that the US won't attack Iran directly. I think we are still quite a while away from that being a possibility. Much more likely is that Iranian officials in Iraq or Syria will be hit by a retaliatory strike, as Israel has done recently. It is a significant escalation nonetheless. And it comes as Israel seems to be gearing up for a suicidal war with Hezbollah.

The Country of the Week is Iran! Feel free to chime in with books, essays, longform articles, even stories and anecdotes or rants. More detail here.

Updates continue to be AWOL - but I am cooking something. Hopefully.

Israel-Palestine Conflict

If you have evidence of Israeli crimes and atrocities that you wish to preserve, there is a thread here in which to do so.

Sources:

Defense Politics Asia's youtube channel and their map. Their youtube channel has substantially diminished in quality but the map is still useful. Moon of Alabama, which tends to have interesting analysis. Avoid the comment section.
Understanding War and the Saker: reactionary sources that have occasional insights on the war.
Alexander Mercouris, who does daily videos on the conflict. While he is a reactionary and surrounds himself with likeminded people, his daily update videos are relatively brainworm-free and good if you don't want to follow Russian telegram channels to get news. He also co-hosts The Duran, which is more explicitly conservative, racist, sexist, transphobic, anti-communist, etc when guests are invited on, but is just about tolerable when it's just the two of them if you want a little more analysis.

Disgusting’: Rebuke mounts against WSJ column targeting US Arab community

“Welcome to Dearborn, America’s Jihad Capital,” The Wall Street Journal headline read in reference to Dearborn, Michigan in the United States.

Since the column – which focused on local advocacy for Palestinian rights – was published on Friday, municipal officials, rights advocates and US legislators have come to the defence of the Michigan city that is home to large Arab and Muslim American communities.

“This is disgusting. WSJ should be ashamed of itself for promoting this kind of Islamophobic BS, and should immediately apologize to the residents of Dearborn and to Muslims everywhere,” Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal wrote in a social media post today.

US Senator Gary Peters, who represents Michigan, also said the column “endangers the entire Dearborn community”.

I never want to hear the word "Psy-op" again oh my god.

Jackson Hinkle and all these other freaks aren't "zionist psy-ops" you conspiratorial morons, they're just chuds. They hate Israel because they hate jews. They're "on the right side" on this one specific issue for the wrong reasons.

This is such bird-brained thinking.

Jackson Hinkle is a Nazi -> Hinkle says Israel is bad -> I also say Israel is bad -> I don't agree with Nazis -> Hinkle must think Israel is actually good -> Hinkle must be a psy-op

99% of the time when some idiot calls anything a psy-op it's just because they're incapable of thinking even one layer beneath the surface and have to therefore attribute everything to ominous puppet masters pulling the strings. Shut the fuck up. Right-wingers who hate Israel are not fucking "zionist psy-ops", they're just plain-ass antisemites. They've existed for as long as judaism has. Stop being conspiracy-brained idiots.

Maybe I should stop doomscrolling on Twitter but does anyone notice that the whole "arab colonialism" talking point is becoming increasingly mainstream. I remember prior to Oct 7th that the concept of "Arab colonialism" was a relatively fringe idea. Now I see even Pro- Palestinian people spreading this talking point as if it's a established historical fact. thonk

Will Zaluzhny go quietly? Is there anything he could realistically do without sabotaging the Ukrainian war effort?

It would be funny if he went full prigo-pog and marched on Kiev, but I seriously doubt he would do that.

It's an obvious propaganda push. Hiding behind black faces as you said. It's the exact same stuff with regards to pink washing and rainbow imperialism. This kind of thing is used to drive up support for war amongst egalitarian/radical liberals and progressives, and divide the anti war movement.

Also these are obviously not the only US military personnel that have died over the past few months, there is a reason why these were the deaths made public to the media.

A propaganda push that clearly works, look at the comments here on a left wing internet space

Not sure if this is a sign that I should step back and take a break but I can't help but feel that sentiments like "Zionists are attempting to turn Jewish imagery into hate symbols, and we CANT LET THEM SUCCEED!" are kind of just self absorbed.

Like it just feels obvious that the only way to actually do that is to dismantle the Israeli state that is physically scarring the flesh and soil of Palestine with the Star of David, and that this shit of like protesting by performatively wearing Jewish symbols to somehow defy that reality just feels like self absorbtion, I can sympathize that its scary and frustrating to have this happen with your iconography, but like what are you actually doing by specifically making a show of continuing to wear those symbols and then posting monologues about it?

Idk, maybe I just need to block all this shit out on twitter and not pay attention to it for a while.

The Communist Party of Mexico presents its presidential candidate for the 2024 elections (spanish)

On January 28th of this year in Mexico City, the Communist Party decided to participate in the next electoral process where the new president of the Republic will be elected, as well as senators, deputies and some state and municipal governments.

Marco Vinicio Dávila Juárez from Veracruz, a graduate of the Faculty of Biology of the University of Veracruz, an active member of the party with more than 40 years of militancy will be the PCM candidate for the presidency of the republic, he has a trajectory where he has participated as a student and youth leader as well as Secretary of the Organization and Director of the Central Organ.

The decision to participate in the next elections in 2024 was made during the IV National Political Conference of the party and from the evaluation of the six-year term of the current president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, where they pointed out as conclusions that the current government represents an anti-worker and anti-popular policy, they also pointed out that currently in Mexico there are 50 million people in extreme poverty as well as wages that do not reflect a real increase in purchasing power despite the increases pointed out by the government in office who they also accused of having nothing to do with the left.

The PCM pointed out that Mexico lacks the political option of the working class because the electoral law has an anti-democratic character and the candidacies of the political party alliances of MORENA-PVEM-PT as well as that of the PRI-PAN-PRD are of interests far removed from those of the majority of the inhabitants because they represent a policy of shock against the working class "An option of radical change to put a stop to injustice and bring the workers to power. That is the option represented by the Communist Party of Mexico". In addition, candidates were presented for the positions of head of the Government of Mexico City and for the Government of Morelos.

The PCM has a long history within the left in Mexico, it was founded in 1919 as a workers' political party thanks to the National Socialist Congress, the last time it ran in presidential elections was in 1976 with Valentín Campa Salazar, one of the leaders of the 1959 railroad strike.

obviously they wont win, but i do think its good for any communist party to not blindly follow the socdem/labour party of their home country, hopefully they will be able to use the current anti-neoliberal discourse of the left in Mexico so they can grow in size, the current communist party is still kinda small ever since the collapse of the original PCM in 1981. here is the parties newspaper if you want to learn a bit more about them (in spanish)

US and UK have no respect for international law or other cultures, Irish MEP says Irish MEP Mick Wallace has condemned the US and the UK for bombing Yemen, accusing the allies of having no respect for other cultures or international law.

“The people of #Yemen stand in Solidarity with the #Palestinian people no matter what happens,” Wallace, a member of Left in the European Parliament – GUE/NGL, said in a post on X.

“The #US + #UK are bombing Yemen because they have no respect for other cultures or for International Law – No respect for anything that doesn’t suit their Political Agenda…”

Just a question. I know it is pointless to refute the non-logic of genocide. But I keep thinking about this every time I hear about how Gaza must be carpet bombed due to how "embedded" Hamas is in the Gazan population. How there are "no civilians" in Gaza.

I obtain all value from the sidebar of the most obvious wikipedia articles which are linked.

Hamas in Gaza:

  • Population Palestinians (2016) = 4,816,503 source

  • Hamas Membership = 20,00025,000 source

  • Math: ( 25,000 / 4,816,503 ) * 100 = 0.5%

result: 0.5% Gazans in Hamas

IDF in Israel:

  • Israel 2024 population = 9,846,080 source

  • Available and "Fit" for military service = 1,499,998 males, age 17–49 (2016), 1,392,319 females, age 17–49 (2016) source

    • Total = 2,892,317
  • Math: (2,892,317 / 9,846,080) * 100 = 29%

result: 29% of the total population of Israel is available and "fit" for service in the IDF.

(If you include "unfit" people the total is 3,068,249, or 31% of population.)

The IDF % does not even count those who served in the past but are no longer "available", for example being over age 50. People who have directly on an individual, documented level participated in crimes on Palestinians. Furthermore it does not exclude children (28% of Israeli population is <= 14 source). If only adults were included it would be a solid majority. I think this math is pretty generous to the israeli side.

And still about 1/3 of their population seems to be directly, presently involved as combatants or potential combatants.

It seems to me that if I were Israel, I wouldn't be introducing an argument like this.

Is my logic flawed? Or is it just too sick to think like this?

farmers have now started a blockade of paris using tractors, blocking eight highways. In recent years Paris has earned more and more scorn from the rest of France, and is rightfully seen by many as a different nation within the nation, utterly disconnected from the realities of most. Interested to see how the government will deal with this, since pretty much everyone is sympathetic to the plight of farmers.

Syrian Author discussing how the "US plan to withdraw from Iraq and Syria" is a psyop that no one believes except people outside the region. It's in Arabic but heres some excerpts I quickly translated. https://www.almayadeen.net/articles/واشنطن-تروج-لنية-الانسحاب-من-سوريا--صواريخ-المقاومة-أصدق-أنب

"In Syria, no one believes the stated intentions or claims of the United States, even when Washington puts forward ideas about the need for communication between the Syrian government and the SDF , under the pretext of continuing to fight the terrorist organization Daesh, because Syrians know that it [the US] is behind ISIS.

...

Accordingly, the strategy of the resistance forces in the region is moving in only one direction, which does not take into account any American official announcements or media leaks. This direction is the direction of resistance and targeting all occupation bases in Syria and Iraq, as well as intensifying targeting on the zionist occupation entity in Occupied Palestine and the Occupied Golan Heights.

...

Also, in the recent speech of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad he clarified his position on the presence of the American occupation forces. He emphasized that resistance is the only way to liberate the occupied Syrian territory.

This is a position confirmed by all the leaders of the axis of resistance including the leaders of the Iraqi resistance factions, and Mr. Abdul Malik al-Houthi, the leader of Ansarallah in Yemen, as well as the recent speech of the political leader Osama Hamdan from the Islamic Resistance Movement in Palestine, Hamas.

Hamdan revealed the Palestinian [and entire Axis] resistance constant communication with the Syrian leadership, especially during this battle [Al-Aqsa Flood] and the critical role played by Damascus in this struggle against the occupier, for the sake of freedom and liberation of the region.

Good interview with Yanis Varoufakis: The EU and the War on Gaza w/ Yanis Varoufakis - 99 ZU EINS - Ep. 347

My favorite part:

There's no doubt that it was a highly problematic verdict. It was a diplomatic verdict. It was a kind of decision a court makes when it doesn't want to make a decision. But even that is a victory for Palestine....[Israel] went to the court with one demand, that the court dismisses the case. Just dismisses the case. Out! And in that, Israel lost... In the court of public opinion in the United States, in Britain, in France, in Germany...our governments have become complicit in the genocide of the Palestinian people by dismissing out-of-hand the very word "genocide".

(Also some good economic analysis of Europe and European politics over the last 15 years.... "Europe has become the stupid continent.")

The US says the timing of the strikes was unrelated to the transfer of the remains of the troops killed in Jordan, which took place just hours earlier.

Rather, the weather determined the timing, the Pentagon says.

"This was designed around the weather," director of operations for the Joint Staff at the Pentagon, Douglas Sims, told reporters.

"Good weather presented itself today, and as a result this took place."

Multiple military aircraft were involved, including long-range B-1 bombers that were dispatched from the US.

"The beauty of the American bomber is we can strike anywhere in the world at a time of our choosing," Mr Sims said.

can we kill america already please thanks

Kinda funny in a history as a farce way that once again the Singaporean masses are much more progressive than their government.

More and more Singaporeans are upset about the government’s weak statements in supporting unprincipled neutrality towards Zionist Occupation and Palestinian Resistance while at the same time implementing restrictions on outwardly supporting either faction (mostly Palestine) on the streets.

The “Israel”-Palestine conflict resurfaces the colonial scar of the Malaysia-Singapore split back into the forefront. Two nations united in history and culture but separated by politics. How much longer can Singapore try continue sidestepping the “race and religion” issue through their “Confucian Capitalist” governance? How long can they continue sustaining imperialism in Southeast Asia, outwardly proclaiming to be neutral but internally supporting Western Capital (as evidenced by their sanctions against Russia)?

They can act like the “Israel”-Palestine conflict is purely about religion (while superficially rejecting it in their statements) - a conflict that makes the “vocal” muslim minority “act out” - but when the masses down below across racial and religious groups demand support for Palestine, demand support for China, you have to wonder how long can the “old guard” can keep this facade up.

So Singaporean foreign ministers can continue giving out talks and write books praising China, about how they - as part of the Global South - “understand” China, about their “neutrality”, about their “social cohesion and harmony”, about their “secularism” but history isn’t as kind to Singapore as they are to themselves.

Time is ticking for the city state.
