I just had an epiphany: This Kursk offensive is the exact reason Zaluzhny was kicked out and replaced with Syrsky back in February!
Zaluzhny would never agree to such a harebrained waste of troops and resources, but Syrsky, the butcher of Bakhmut, who tried to hold onto that city for no gain whatsoever and doesn't give a rats ass about Ukrainian lives, certainly would.
Russia is increasing defenses around the Kursk frontline to stall out or stop the Ukrainian advance, but they are in no hurry to retake the territory right away. Don't interrupt your enemy while he's making a mistake.
The more important part that the mainstream media at large is ignoring, is that Russia has been able to make very significant advances towards Pokrovsk, a central logistics hub for Ukraine in the Donbas region, where several supply lines lead through, and which seems to be the ultimate goal beyond Bakhmut and Avdiivka. Contrary to what the average Westener may think, the frontline there is anything but stagnant right now.
If they are able to capture that town, they may be able to split the Ukrainian forces in the Donbas in half, which in turn may lead to a collapse of the Ukranian front in the east.
