Matrix+elements is very easy to selfhost in any homelab. works well enough for goverments. Federated and easy end to end encryption. And one can easily set up a web archive bridge forvarchiveable rooms.

That beeing said i still think IRC is the best for pure text chat.

I have no idea what i am talking about... But what would happen if you pulled a black tarp over the panel? Could even be automatic like the blends on a building. And even partial.

While there are no perfect way. It would be much less of a problem then it is now. And easier for watchdog orgs to pay attention to and call out.

This for sure. Making games easily accessible on linux have lead to a lot of people not having to deal with windows anymore.
It is the same effect as a kidnapping victim beeing grateful when someone comes to release them fom the torture rack. It is not strange that valve gets a lot of goodwill from their actions.
Would i sish more people did as steam does? Ofcourse! But none do, so we are grateful for steam. I think they saved pc gaming. And not only for linux.

Price parity with other store fronts is only for steam keys tho? Right? I think the publisher can charge whatever on the other store front if they use the other storefronts infra.
It is just when you in effect sells steam infra, (steam carry the cost) you have to have the same price on steam.

Agree 100%
When i was a kid, we did not have a tv, for many years. But my uncle did. And he had 2 movies on vhs? Smokey and the bandit. And the sting.
If there was bad weather we siblings and cousins often went there to watch one of those 2. Have probably seen the sting 20-30 times. But i would not be suprised if we saw the bandit a hundred times ;D

What kind of media were you consuming in US? I am in norway and even over here there was day in and day out of the latest insane thing trump had did or said the last 24h with video of some speach where some minority or the other got rights removed. Or some executive order that was right out of the ss handbook. Or kissing ass with some authorative dictator.
It was a 4 year of constantly feeling sorry for americans. And hoping the bottom was reached. But he allways managed to do something worse the next day.
I think we got a taste of the 24h news cycle in us and it was exhausting.

What is wrong with your system that requires disabeling updates?
Been running debian stable on a few hundred servers for 25 ish years.
And I always install and enable unattended upgrades. And it have never been a problem. Not even once.

As well as the whole firefly series. Watches them all annually.

That only applies for steam keys afaik. You can not sell your steam keys cheaper anywhere else, since steam is on the hook for the cost and services. That is fairly logical.
A dev can charge whatever if they deal with all that themself on their own webpage forinstance.

edit: had a hrd time finding the video i knew i had seen this on : https://v.redd.it/xnl8xyki4h5d1/DASH_1080.mp4

am running on linux with KDE and pulseaudio. After the june 13 update i have not been able to get the mic working in game. while it works in all other programs, and in the steam mic test in settings as well.
I was wondering if anyone else that use linux and steam have the mic working at all? anyone?

Hd2 on linux do not detect a mic any more after the latest patch. Mic works in all other programs. And also in steam mic test. Anyone noticed something similar?
