Rules: explain why

Ready player one.

That has to be one of the cringiest movies I've seen, is tries so hard, too hard with it's "WE LOVE YOU NERD, YOU'RE SO COOL FOR PLAYING GAMES AND GETTING THIS 80S REFERENCE" message and the whole "corporation bad, the people good" narrative seems written for toddlers... The fan service feels cheap and adds nothing to the story.

Finally, they trying to make the people believe that very attractive girl with a barely visible red tint spot on her face is "ugly"... Like wtf?

Yet it received decent reviews plus being one of the most successful movies of that year.

I've been coding for years in a multitude of languages, but other than one c class I had in college I mostly learned through osmosis, or learned new things as they were needed.

So my knowledge is honestly all over the place and with a ton of gaps.

I'm trying to learn rust and starting going through The Rust Book and afterwards I plan on going on Rust by Example and trying to code my stuff as strictly following best practices as possible.

Is that a waste of time? I mean rawdogging it has been working for me for a decade now. Should I just yolo and write what I wanna write in Rust and learn as I go?

I keep hearing I should get a flu shot to help prevent bird flu — but I thought flu shots only prevented illness from the particular strains the shot was designed for. Does getting a traditional flu shot do anything to prevent bird flu transmission?

I watched Bedknobs and Broomsticks over Christmas and now I have Bobbing Along stuck in my head.

Let's share our current ones to remove their power.

A coworker asks what you're bringing to the potluck. What's the worst response?

I've been using Lemmy since the Reddit exodus. I haven't looked back since, but I miss a lot of mental health communities that I haven't been able to find replacements for here on Lemmy. Does anyone know any cool mental health communities that are somewhat active?

Did you try to erase all existence of your past? Or do you own it as if it were just another chapter of your life? Or something else entirely?

Since the election I've kinda buried my head in the sand to try and stay sane, so I'm not sure what projections are looking like for the real estate market. Unfortunately I need to move pretty ASAP and I'm having the worst luck with rentals.

So, anyone have any advice or an idea of the outlook in the next few months?

Why the internet troll problem is actually a culture problem: how online trolling fits comfortably within today’s media landscape.

Internet trolls live to upset as many people as possible, using all the technical and psychological tools at their disposal. They gleefully whip the media into a frenzy over a fake teen drug crisis; they post offensive messages on Facebook memorial pages, traumatizing grief-stricken friends and family; they use unabashedly racist language and images. They take pleasure in ruining a complete stranger’s day and find amusement in their victim’s anguish. In short, trolling is the obstacle to a kinder, gentler Internet. To quote a famous Internet meme, trolling is why we can’t have nice things online. Or at least that’s what we have been led to believe. In this provocative book, Whitney Phillips argues that trolling, widely condemned as obscene and deviant, actually fits comfortably within the contemporary media landscape. Trolling may be obscene, but, Phillips argues, it isn’t all that deviant. Trolls’ actions are born of and fueled by culturally sanctioned impulses—which are just as damaging as the trolls’ most disruptive behaviors.

Phillips describes the relationship between trolling and sensationalist corporate media—pointing out that for trolls, exploitation is a leisure activity; for media, it’s a business strategy. She shows how trolls, “the grimacing poster children for a socially networked world,” align with social media. And she documents how trolls, in addition to parroting media tropes, also offer a grotesque pantomime of dominant cultural tropes, including gendered notions of dominance and success and an ideology of entitlement. We don't just have a trolling problem, Phillips argues; we have a culture problem. This Is Why We Can't Have Nice Things isn’t only about trolls; it's about a culture in which trolls thrive.

Hey all, probably better places to ask this but you all know everything. I got a oneplus 10 pro, and it has a very faint microphone icon in the top right. It's not there all the time, but I've noticed it with firefox, and a few other apps.

I messed around with the mic permissions but nothing seemed to get rid of it.

What is it, and how do I make it not there?

I'd like to see just how horrible someone can make a site. Facebook is a good contender.

I was thinking about this the other day.

I can't see the point, desktop search is a solved problem.

Yes Windows find is shit, but it doesn't have to be.

I know a bunch of the conspiracies, but what is the legitimate use case?

aka: Burglary of your home, Car break-in, Your bedroom getting searched by someone (Parents/Roomates/Housemates/ or even Burglars), Your Backpack, Personal Electronics/Phone/Computer/etc getting searched, etc. (Including any seaches by law enforcrment / security)

Basically, anything that can be considered "personal space".

Why I ask?

Well... My parent's car has signs of being searched through last night, I think they forgot to close the windows all the way, and some random thief got in and looking for valuables, nothing of value wa taken, but stuff were all over the car, now I hate the idea of getting into that car again (someone might've slept inside the car, blegh 😖). That car feels so "tainted" now.

Like this cant be only my feeling right? Like, you just feel disgusted after someone touch your things against your will (especially if they are strangers).

I give them a wash when I first buy them, then never again unless they actually get something on them, which is very infrequent.

This question doesn't apply to jeans you're wearing to work in, and expect to get dirty.

I, personally, like to take the opportunity to express aspirations: not just trying to stop doing things I feel are harmful, but also to try new things or practice positive things more. A couple from me:

  • Avoid sarcasm when dealing with people, especially strangers, it does not go over well when they don't get the joke
  • Do something positive, helpful, and non-criminal to counter the right wing political trend. (granted, this one needs more detail)

How about you?

in favor of using ONLY MESSAGING SERVICES, public messaging services, sorta like discord if i want to make friends, because i realized that making friends is already hard enough and therefore it's harder to make friends in social media!! mostly because of the complicated ui!! dang it!! but yea if i were to ditch everything and instead use messaging services, PUBLIC messaging services like discord or even matrix, i think i would make friends more easily, that would make me very ok, plus i could show off more stuff that i've been working on like programming and get feedback and stuff, woa!! anyway what do you think please??

I'm getting a bit sick of large corporations a) demanding excess data as a condition of doing business with me, b) allowing it to be stolen, and c) giving zero fucks about it.

What are some things that us netizens can do to make our displeasure known.

Extra points for funny ideas.
