On this day in 2012, the Marikana Massacre took place when South African police fired on striking workers, killing 34 and injuring 76 in the most lethal use of force by the state in half a century.

The shootings have been compared to the infamous Sharpeville Massacre in 1960, when police fired on a crowd of anti-Pass Law protesters, killing 69 people, including 10 children. The Marikana Massacre took place on the 25-year anniversary of a nationwide strike by over 300,000 South African workers.

On August 10th, miners had initiated a wildcat strike at a site owned by Lonmin in the Marikana area, close to Rustenburg, South Africa. Although ten people (mostly workers) had been killed before August 16th, it was on that day that an elite force from the South African Police Service fired into a crowd of strikers with rifles, killing 34 and injuring 76.

After surveying the aftermath of the violence, photojournalist Greg Marinovich concluded that "[it is clear] that heavily armed police hunted down and killed the miners in cold blood."

Following the massacre, a massive wave of strikes occurred across the South African mining sector - in early October, analysts estimated that approximately 75,000 miners were on strike from various gold and platinum mines and companies across South Africa, most of them doing so illegally.

A year after the Marikana Massacre, author Benjamin Fogel wrote "Perhaps the most important lesson of Marikana is that the state can gun down dozens of black workers with little or no backlash from 'civil society', the judicial system or from within the institutions that supposedly form the bedrock of democracy."

The Anglosphere has such a weird relationship with the family. On one hand they seem to talk about how lack of parents lead to crimes in the cities and how family is the most important support you can have. And then on the other hand they seem to either kick their kids out as soon as they can or their kids willingly leave, visiting maybe only a couple of times a year. No wonder Anglo countries have such high rates of loneliness and depression.

Employers should be legally mandated to reply to job applications for a listing in a timely manner or face heavy penalties.

Furthermore, they should be barred from reposting a listing unless they have replied to all previous applicants.

Will be opening donations for my constitutionally impossible 2024 presidential run shortly 😎

If you could choose one: preventing the invasion of libya or Iraq, which would you choose?

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 year ago (3 children)

Iraq set the stage for Libya so I choose Iraq.

Listening to early 2010s music and feeling very nostalgic for those times. They weren't better but I was so young and I just want to go back in time and give that kid a big hug

Last night I had a dream that when I got home, there were a couple of guys grilling in my backyard. I went to check out what was going on and they were none other than Adam Friedland, Nick Mullen, and Stavros Halkias. I played it cool and pretended I didn't know who they were, I said oh yeah I think I've heard of you guys, etc etc. Eventually though I couldn't hold in the laughter and the jig was up. So Nick Mullen bodyslammed me into the ground in my own back yard.

Chef offered me a flat $2 raise to be a cook, so I'd be making $16.42. I kinda want >$18, and was going to ask for $18.50 but like idk. My main argument was just going to be about how our raises are capped at less than the rate of inflation and giving me a bigger wage now will ensure I want to stick around despite that, specifically citing how the director told me that the only way to get a decent wage increase is to change jobs.

But idk if they'll care about that, or enough to pay me another $2/hr extra.

My friend had 15 years experience and was only making $15, asked them for 19-20 and was told "good luck" soooo idk

Thoughts

I think I still want to do the job even at 16.42 because that's still like another 80 dollars a week before tax and I need money :c

Hours of fruitless troubleshooting to figure out why a new install of Libreelec wasn't outputting video over HDMI to my TV, just audio, on an older laptop that I had previously run Libreelec perfectly on. Turns out the solution was to use the generic-legacy x86-64 image instead of the generic x86-64 one. Worked flawlessly from first boot. My mental capacity for technical problem-solving for the day is now at zero.

Thinking of an elaborate pun on posit as in "to put forth as the basis of an argument" and positive in the usual sense and ovipositor.

Is anyone else really bad at drinking? Like, I spill coffee on myself like a solid quarter of the time. I keep an extra shirt in my car so I don't have to do field work with coffee on my shirt

I wish I could get someone else to negotiate wages for me like idk if I can get more than they're offering me or not and like idk what it I try to get more money and fuck it up somehow because I don't know how to magically compel my employer to give me a higher number

The power of a union! I know it's not as easy as walking up to your coworkers and saying "lets have a union now", but as someone in a union it was great not having to negotiate wages and having it all spelled out in our collective bargaining agreement. It's also nice when we send our actual best to negotiate for all of us instead of having to so it individually.

The fact that you're fishing for attention by building yourself up instead of tearing yourself down says that you're a fun person to hang out with.
