Official Title of this Community: Ethnic Minorities and People of Color

Why is the title different?

We like to have fun here.

What is this place? A safe space for underrepresented peoples and peoples of color to talk, chill, and vibe.

What are the basic rules of the community?

  1. Follow Lemmy TOS and Community Guidelines. Non negotiable. This is the bedrock and mods will make decisions with this always in mind.

  2. This community is for ethnic minorities and people of color. This is a safe space where such people can freely discuss their struggles, insight, and thoughts without fear. If you are not, we respectfully ask you do not post or comment here. A future community will be established to allow for racial discussions with a mixed userbase. However, remember, comments here must still respect Lemmy TOS and Community Guidelines.

  3. Irony Racism is still racism. Racism is bad m'kay? We will treat irony racism and bad faith racist satire as racism. Will wield the ban hammer accordingly.

  4. No sectarianism: This is an identity channel not a channel for you all to complain about why XYZ isn't the "one true leftism". Take that to another place.

  5. Stupidpol is not allowed. Stupidpol is class reductionist. We are an identity community. Thinking like stupidpol ignores the struggles of the oppressed, their voices, and their need for unique support. Nothing says oppression more than someone saying that the identity you have is "not real" and that if you only thought like them you'd see what your "real" identity is. Mods reserve the right to ban users and content who promote stupidpol, stupidpol memes, and other class reductionist thinking.

FAQ

I don't look XYZ and/or sometimes I can pass as white so I don't know if I can post here. Can I?

What can I post?

Fuck the Americans for being born...

If they want to desperately intervene (militarily) , may someone turn Mexico into America's death knell

Afghanistan is already America's Afghanistan nerd

[–] [email protected] 4 points 4 months ago (1 children)

No, make America feel what USSR felt in Afghanistan, except this time, more personal... and more bloodier...

Do you recall a certain Operation Cyclone? nerd

CW: Police violenceSaw some pigs chase this guy through the streets and arrest him. The guy started to cry and his pants fell. My friend recorded then the pigs went around a corner and searched him. I wish there were things to do that didn't involve getting arrested too. Got to talk to someone else on the street about how terrible and violent pigs are, at least that was nice. Fuck the police, vile scum.

I jogged two miles this morning in under nine minutes. I feel relaxed and interrelated with the world.

I think that officially counts as a run.

I miss my mom’s cooking.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 3 months ago

I'm very thankful that I live close to my parents, allowing me to eat with them a couple of times each week.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 months ago

My Mom's cooking is great.

Oh my God. I just watched Comrades: Almost A Love Story for the first time and it's just such a beautiful and cute and sad film. It completely blew me away, I came in not expecting anything. I feel like just crying about it forever.

Not even, it came out in 1996* so I was way behind. It's really interesting to watch it now though with the retrospective of knowing what waits for the characters in the political economies of the 2000's and on.

It was released by Golden Harvest so I don't think that counts as an indie in Hong Kong. I think it had a major production and wide release but I could be wrong.

Really recommend it! Subtle critique of capitalist politics in Hong Kong and the alienation of immigrant identities, among other things, but it's mainly a romantic comedy.

Fascinating, just by reading this. I'll check it out.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Let me know what you think!

I watched it on Criterion Channel if you have access to that but you can easily torrent.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 3 months ago

Understood!

It's 4 AM and I can't sleep. Anxious about work, worried my job is circling the drain but I keep returning to these anxious thoughts every few months. Pretty sure my manager enjoys stoking it.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Do you have sleep apnea or just insomnia? They can kinda feed into each other, especially if you can't go to sleep immediately.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago) (1 children)

I don't really know honestly. I definitely have insomnia, I've wondered about sleep apnea but have never gotten tested for it.

I definitely can't fall asleep immediately though. Sometimes it takes hours.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 3 months ago

Definitely get tested!

Got my internet fixed. I think this time it should be final. Thank you, tech guy, for your service.

Had a random memory to a time I lived in the US. This middle aged white woman was having surgery done and the doctor who was assigned to do it was Indian. She insisted on getting an “American” doctor because she didn’t trust that the Indian doctor had sufficient training.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 3 months ago

Yeah, I've seen stuff like this.

After the election here in México whitexicans to no one surprise decided to go super hard into classism and rascism to justify no one liking the coalition of the 2 parties every blames for the current state of the country.

Some are coping really bad saying this will be the last elections in mex which is really funny

Work has been extremely soul crushing but I have a very good feeling this month is going to be a comeback.

Today marks officially two months off marijuana and I can feel my ancestors celebrating and my money more manageable.

I have a class B written test appointment coming up soon and if all goes well I'll become a bus driver!!

How do you cope with the fact that the majority of the white world seems to take great joy in devaluing and dehumanising us? Sometimes it just seems like too much to bear without becoming uncontrollably violent.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago) (1 children)
  1. White people are the world's minority. The vast majority of the world is POC. People of NATO are the minority.

  2. This self-important minority is losing their grasp on global hegemony, and their decline is inevitable. There will be a time when people talk about England in the same way people talk about Madagascar, and this will happen a lot sooner than people think.

If you're talking about your personal life, it really boils down to not hanging out with white people so you aren't exposed to their bullshit. This is obviously a lot easier to achieve if you live in an ethnic enclave than if you live in an area that's like 85% white.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago) (1 children)

I'm speaking generally. What really set me off yesterday was the animals who were crying over hunting dogs being killed in Gaza. I love dogs, but they cheer on the mass deaths of brown-skinned civilians and children whilst crying for a beast trained to murder. That's how little they value the lives of POC.

Thanks though, your words are comforting. Unfortunately IRL it's hard not to engage with white people on some level, I'm surrounded by them at work, and a lot of people I socialize with are white too. The contempt they have for POC shows through though, even with co-workers, even with friends, even if it's minor. It feels like it's in their DNA. It makes me sad but I'm getting to the point where I can't trust any white person.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 3 months ago (1 children)

I don't think it's in their DNA, but human populations can take a lot of things for granted. It's certainly in their culture and I feel like comparative cultural psychology is understudied when it comes to whites vis a vis other populations in the imperial core.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 months ago (1 children)

One of the exerts from Columbus' diary in A peoples history of the United States mentioned that the Native population on Turtle Island were docile and friendly, then he said they would make good servants. It's fascinating how evil the culture is and has been, even to their own before whiteness was created.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 months ago

Well, I agree, but I try to work with everyone, despite their ancestral history.

I think what you described is, of course, very much a problem and we have to fight against that.

On PTO for the week. I was going to travel, but my parents health has been so-so (mom recovering from surgery and dad just not feeling well in general), so I've stuck around at home to help my brother with things. So far just going to different spots in the city and relaxing. Also hoping to hit up a few restaurants I've been wanting to go to, but haven't had the time to. Was hoping to hang out with my crush and/or friends over the weekend, but things didn't pan out.
