Dude, this clearly isn’t gonna be the fifteenth time that is the charm. Just deliver him to the fucking ICC in a rubber sack and install someone else that’s easier to deal with. You said your support for Israel is ironclad. Well, right now that means getting rid of Likud. You can have some covert agency do it, and just tell the voters you're as shocked as anybody about what happened but you support the new president-elect and their roadmap for peace. Literally everybody wins.

You sit atop the world’s most powerful military, economic, and (for certain definitions) intelligence apparatus. Y’all can do this stuff no problem when we need to buy oil or papayas or whatever for cheap, but all of a sudden when killing Arabs is the issue at stake it’s all “oh boo boo we could never fuck up another country’s machinery of government, that would be ever so crude”

(I am joking, clearly, about how easy it would be, but not about the broad strokes of the absurdity of claiming America is helpless in this and we just have to keep asking and getting chumped for it, over and over and over.)

Israeli officials said the main point is Hamas' response includes flexibility that would allow the parties to enter into the first stage of the deal, while taking the risk that the next stages won't materialize.

So, once they get the hostages back the genocide continues and Hamas has no leverage to stop it, Biden will dust off his hands and declare Mission Accomplished.

This will either fall through or result in continuing civilian mass death and suffering.

According to the agreement, the temporary ceasefire becomes permanent with the return of all hostages.

Biden said the first phase of the proposed deal would would last for six weeks and would include a “full and complete cease-fire,” a withdrawal of Israeli forces from all densely populated areas of Gaza and the release of a number of hostages, including women, the elderly and the wounded, in exchange for the release of hundreds of Palestinian prisoners.

Gaza destruction likely helped push Hamas to soften cease-fire demands, several officials say The second phase would include the release of all remaining living hostages, including male soldiers, and Israeli forces would withdraw from Gaza.

“And as long as Hamas lives up to its commitments, the temporary cease-fire would become, in the words of the Israeli proposal, ‘the cessation of hostilities permanently,’” Biden said.

The third phase calls for the start of a major reconstruction of Gaza, which faces decades of rebuilding from devastation caused by the war. The 4-1/2 page Israeli proposal was transmitted to Hamas on Thursday.

I think there is little to no trust between the parties. I imagine that even with a ceasefire there is a real risk that as long as Netanyahu and his right wing government are in power. They will break it whenever they please. They will make up some reason. Maybe a three-year-old gave them a nasty look or picked up a rock. There will need to be neutral observers allowed in and journalists, to create transparency and trust. I can't see it holding unless both parties are made to follow international law and participate in reconciliation, like they did in Rwanda.

That’s possible. The difference is the agreement would put Biden in direct oversight of Israel. He currently has a Congress that voted in favor of aid, and a State Department that submitted an inconclusive report of war crimes. If Netanyahu breaks the agreement or negotiates in bad faith, Biden would have full authority to amend the munitions agreements without facing impeachment. We’d finally see if he’s been honest in his words of accountability. I’d like to know if it’s been bullshit or if he’s truly been following the advisement of the rest of the government.

Awful idea since he's long since made his undying fealty to the fascist apartheid regime clear.

Just like he had before Netanyahu, AIPAC, and the other American politicians they own threw a hissy fit over his extremely inadequate temporary halt of exactly one weapon after actively sending more weapons than Congress had already approved for months.

We’d finally see if he’s been honest in his words of accountability.

He's already made that abundantly clear to anyone paying even halfway close attention.

I see where you’re coming from. I agree that he’s very loyal to Israel. I’m not as certain that he wants to be supporting the slaughter of innocent Palestinians. With Biden’s cease-fire in place, it would at least put the responsibility of accountability directly on him if Netanyahu breaches the agreement.
