I think Orange Book is probably slightly more self aware than I give it credit for. The question imo is to what extent, because while there's a lot of perspective afforded by being in Steph's or Nicole's perspective, which clearly demomstrates that the author is aware of Maria's utter bullshit... she is also kind of a self insert megaphone?? I guess you could say Maria and the way the book portrays her is an extended self reflection, if you wanted to imply things about the author.
