I can't put it into words but the whole genre of black men replacing historical figures of memes feels wrong to me. "wouldn't it be silly if Lenin was black🀣🀣" is basically the entire joke.

Correct me if im wrong

Lenin is woke now

[–] [email protected] 56 points 3 days ago (3 children)

It appears to be making fun of afrocentrist "Beethoven was black" pseudohistory.

Imo, yes, these kinds of memes come from the same sort of racism as mayos posting those racist "we was kings" memes.

That said, the image where someone ran Lenin through some filters to make him different races, I did find funny if only cause it reminds me of all those different depictions of Jesus where it's like hey, Jesus is Chinese now.

[–] [email protected] 30 points 3 days ago

Jesus is Chinese now.

Leave Korean Jesus alone! He ain't got time for you, he busy! With Korean shit!

where it's like hey, Jesus is Chinese now.

His brother Hong Xiuquan was Chinese, I think that's proof enough biaoqing-point

[–] [email protected] 7 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Seems close enough.

Surely, nothing to start a war over.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 3 days ago

Surely not. The Taiping Heavenly Kingdom of the Great Peace has Peace in the name after all doggirl-happy

That or Black Israelites

I think "afrocentrism gets wacky sometimes" is funny but not funny enough to risk association with racist groypers making anti-black memes.

[–] [email protected] 11 points 2 days ago

Idk this seems like a joke a black person might make to do a tongue-in-cheek claim of Lenin and make fun of all the other people white people people have whitewashed.

Anyway, what people don't know is that Karl Marx's real name was Karim Malik. Uphold Malikism-Leoninism.

feels like "african sounding name" is the punchline here idk

I think you're onto something, but I also remember when this was a popular post on the old subreddit

Results Of The Reddit Demographics Survey 2016

lets not pretend we don't have our own prejudices to work on, especially back then

I can't help but notice there was no option for "italian" disgost

[–] [email protected] 15 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

It's complicated because there are some prejudices we have to work on and some that we don't disgost anti-italian-action

[–] [email protected] 8 points 3 days ago

it's aspirational

Genuine question. I'm Spanish and I feel white AF, would I be considered "Hispanic" on the other side of the pond?

[–] [email protected] 5 points 2 days ago

White's a construct. Italians and Greeks weren't white 50 years ago, but to answer your question, depends who you ask

I never understood the point of this. There are so many great people of color who were also great revolutionaries. Why not just post one of them instead?

[–] [email protected] 15 points 3 days ago

Could've got a Toussaint Louverture musical instead of Hamilton

[–] [email protected] 29 points 3 days ago

Pretty much just "we wuz kings" style racism posting

[–] [email protected] 16 points 3 days ago

Undertone? That's like saying a coffee machine has undertones of coffee.

African people have Kwame Nkrumah, Nelson Mandela, Thomas Sankara, Julius Nyerere, Patrice Lumumba, and many more... plenty to respect.

[–] [email protected] 22 points 3 days ago

Not my dumb ass reading that tweet and being like, "Oh wow, I've never even heard of this dude, I better google Vla-Dameer Leonin".

But yes, you're absolutely right. Now that I understand it. How's it even supposed to be funny?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dyDiC8zBwsI I remember this BadEmpanada video being a pretty good one on the topic but I haven't seen it since it came out. Making fun of black israelites and afrocentrists constantly devolves into racism despite them genuinely being pretty wacky.

it's "haha imagine black people talking about white supremacy"-type racism

[–] [email protected] 14 points 3 days ago

so yea racism

[–] [email protected] 12 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

In a perfect world replacing every historical figure with a black version of them for black history month would be a good bit. In our world it is too messy to untagle why we are laughing at black people being in history for it to be a good idea. Further racist liberals enjoy it too much and there has to be something wrong with it if they enjoy it. Even if we don't have precisely the language to articulate why.

[–] [email protected] 15 points 3 days ago

It does come across kinda sus, I wouldn’t probably make that joke personally. But it is mocking black Israelite weirdos more than I think it’s racist I guess.

[–] [email protected] 15 points 3 days ago

Did I post this?

[–] [email protected] 9 points 3 days ago

weird for them to even joke about considering vladimir lenin WAS black.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 3 days ago (1 children)

MLK was an important figure in the Civil rights movement. But did you know he was actually white?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 days ago

This would be kind of a great genre of bit if done in the style of US history textbooks. Trying to workshop one about communist land reform only working because of Mao's lifelong landlordism.

These posts make me want to look at the history of the poster and mostly just avoid…

As Best case scenario - I just don’t get it, but most likely it’s some troll post.

I view these posts sort of like the ones about various historical figures being from the Balkans / Turkish. It seems fairly harmless to me at least, but I also don't live in a country with a noteable black/african population (most non-whites here are either Turkish or Arabs, and most North Africans don't seem to consider themselves "african" in any way).
