The ruling German coalition - the FDP, the SPD, and the Greens - has been in dire straits since the war in Ukraine began due to their steadfast commitment to destroying their country as much as possible in solidarity with Ukraine destroying themselves too. Scholz is deeply unpopular, with a record low approval of 20%, and his party's approval is even lower.

The German left has been entirely unable to take advantage of this situation, with Die Linke fragmenting due to split opinions on what position they should hold on Ukraine, among other issues. As a result, the major conservative party, the CDU, has gained a lot of voters over the past couple years. Most worrying, however, is the gains that the fascist party, the AfD, has made - from 10% in 2021 all the way to ~20% today. A significant chunk of the vote is likely protest votes due to the lack of an alternative, but a vote for fascists makes you a fascist nonetheless.

Recent controversies with the AfD - including an allegation that they held a secret meeting discussing a plan to mass-deport millions of migrants in an obvious parallel to Nazi meetings planning to remove all Jews from the country - has recently slightly damped approval for the AfD. This meeting generated counter-protests and condemnation from many Germans. It was later revealed that the meeting might not really have happened as alleged, but it doesn't actually matter, because the AfD's stance is being increasingly reflected by the ruling coalition, who recently introduced a bill allowing faster deportations of rejected asylum seekers and significant new powers for authorities in that regard, including potentially the criminalization of sea rescue organizations and imprisonment for aid workers.

The German government is increasingly considering banning the AfD, with their anxiety and motivation to do so rising as the AfD maintains and improves its position as Germany heads towards elections in late 2025. There are intermediate steps that could be done, such as revoking state funding, but if that doesn't work, then the party might well be banned. While I will never argue with fascist parties being banned, this probably won't fix anything, as the underlying economic and social conditions that are fueling these electoral shifts in the first place are not improving. Germany, the largest industrial power in Europe, is mired in a recession, particularly a manufacturing recession, from which there appears to be no escape. It has so far carefully shepherded its natural gas resources to keep the population as mollified as possible, but this has come at the expense of industry. In a trend starting from July 2022, manufacturing PMIs are still well below 50, reaching 45.5 in January 2024, which indicates decline. I suppose if you wanted to look on the bright side, it's better than it was in July 2023, where it was a whopping 38.8, so the rate of decline is becoming a little slower.

And this is just the domestic stuff. Germany has also famously sided with Israel to support them during the ICJ genocide case, has kowtowed to Netanyahu as they bond over being Genocide Experts, and maintains its support of Ukraine, continuing to send military gear and money to be converted to scrap metal by Russian artillery - rather than spending money on doing anything about the cost of living. In the face of a historic economic downturn, it has only more fervently stated its desire to remain militarily opposed to Russia for decades.

I didn't watch the interview but from what I've heard Tucker is trying to bait culture war talking points out of Putin and Vlad, having zero respect for Tucker, responds with Morrowind-style lore dumping about Russia.

Yeah it was lit. Also every other time Putin mentioned the CIA, he keep bringing up the fact that Tucker tried to join the CIA (before he became a TV talking head) and didn't make the cut - it was pretty funny

Nikki Haley defeated by “none of these candidates” in Nevada

…she became the first presidential candidate from either party to lose a race to “none of these candidates” since that option was introduced in Nevada in 1975.

Another fun bit: the Nevada GOP awards delegates to the candidate that wins the caucus. But because the state requires a primary election, they also hold a primary that doesn’t mean anything and does not count towards receiving the nomination. However, a candidate can’t participate in both the primary and the caucus.

What this means is that Nikki Haley forfeited her own Nevada candidacy to participate in a meaningless fake election without Trump to try and get a symbolic win and lost that too.

If trump is an authoritarian dictator in the waiting, wouldn't it make sense to severely curtail executive powers before he arrives in some shape blob-no-thoughts

[–] [email protected] 79 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago) (6 children)

Yes. In a sane fucking world, if you already know the history leading up to Hitler’s rise, and you scream about one of your presidential candidates being Hitler 2, then the most rational thing to do is imprison him and his colleagues and ban his party. The next best thing is to shoot them.

But only liberal voters believe that Trump is Hitler 2. I mean, they’re not completely wrong, but notice how no Democratic politician says such thing on their platforms. They like the Republican party and their politicians. They might hate Trump, but is Biden going to declare marshal law and refuse to step down if Trump wins? No. He will shake his hand and say something about praying to God to end the political divide. Then Biden fucks off to some mansion until he dies while telling everyone to resist.

Biden, and every Democratic politician, are just white bread von Hindenburgs.

A large Finnish union, Akava, has organised a walkout today between 14:00 and 16:00 (i.e. starting now). So me, ya boy, super_mario_69, is currently on strike (ama). It is a political strike action taken to protest the current right-wing government's bullshit. There were pretty wide-spread strikes last week, and the industrial union is going on strike later this month. Orpo seems rather upset about it (lmao eat shit)

idk if this walkout makes any material difference, and if all I'm doing is painting a big-ass target on my back for the inevitable next round of layoffs, but I'm not gonna miss out on an opportunity to take action for once sicko-yes

Nicaragua taking Germany, Canada, UK, Netherlands to ICJ for genocide

The Nicaraguan government started Monday proceedings to take Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Canada to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for their complicity in the genocide against the Palestinian people in Gaza by providing the Israeli occupation with the weapons and means to carry out the horrendous act.

The executive authority in Nicaragua published an official statement in which it revealed that it warned the governments of said Western powers that they might be jointly complicit in the "flagrant and systemic violations" of the Convention on Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide and international humanitarian law in the Gaza Strip.

So, the Brazilian Supreme Court released the video in which Bolsonaro has a meltdown and says he's going to carry out a coup. Apparently, Bolsonaro himself recorded the video to show anyone who missed the speech.

Several people have been arrested, including the leader of the Liberal Party (Bolsonaro's party). Bolsonaro is literally banned from leaving the country, from talking to anyone who is being investigated by the federal police (which is basically all his allies and even his children) and he can't defend himself publicly.

I really hope that when Bolsonaro is arrested he tries to hide, just like Jeanine did, lol. hide-and-seek

Al Jazeera

Confirms 6 yo Palestinian on the call with Red Cresent trapped in car was executed in the car. The last sound was of multiple automatic rifles and the girl screaming.

Girl, 6, found dead after Israeli forces opened fire on family car

A six-year-old Palestinian girl who went missing after the family’s car came under Israeli fire was found dead.

The last time Hind Rajab had been seen was about two weeks ago when she was surrounded by dead relatives after becoming trapped in the vehicle as they tried to flee Gaza City when Israeli forces advanced.

Many family members made the grim discovery when they went to Gaza City’s Tal al-Hawa area looking for the car.

“Hind and everyone else in the car is martyred,” the girl’s grandfather, Baha Hamada, told AFP news agency. Relatives earlier said the family’s vehicle came across Israeli tanks and were fired on as they tried to flee.

But officials said in the report that it would be hard to convince a jury that Biden retained the information willfully — a necessary basis for conviction. That’s because, according to officials, his “memory was significantly limited” and that it wouldn’t have been all that notable for Biden to discover classified information in his home less than a month after he left office.

“Mr. Biden’s memory was significantly limited, both during his recorded interviews with the ghostwriter in 2017, and in his interview with our office in 2023,” the report said.

Alright, after playing around with bluesky for a while I worked out why everyone is so block-happy there.

If someone responds to you and you then block them, the response they made to you is hidden, for everyone. It basically prevents all counter-narrative from occurring. Anyone that even slightly disagrees with the original poster gets blocked and their response countering their post is hidden for everyone.

New news on Western sanctions against Russia just dropped, and it's not looking good for the West...

Germany's exports to Kyrgyzstan are up 1200% since before Russia invaded Ukraine. This stuff is obviously going to Russia. Across the EU, this is a wide-spread problem. Polish exports are up 1800%, Czech 1200%, Italy 870%, Austria 340% and Spain 140%. Putin obviously loves this.

LMAO

And now for German deindustrialisation...

https://nitter.cz/robin_j_brooks/status/1755227911185961243

https://twitter.com/robin_j_brooks/status/1755227911185961243

This is German industrial production. The reason Germany avoided recession in 2022, when Russia first invaded Ukraine, is luck: supply chains started working again, giving a one-off boost to car production. That's over and now there is contraction with no end in sight...

Thanks USA and Joe Biden, mission accomplished in bombing Nordstream.

Background information on why France is trying desperately to hang on to Senegal:

https://nitter.mint.lgbt/marcus_herve/status/1755213589244186836

And mind you that all the French don’t pay taxes. If you recall, last year, it was only Burkina Faso 🇧🇫 under [Ibrahim Traoré] that firstly got rid of the tax treaty that bound us slaves with France 🇫🇷, and now they are paying taxes in the AES. If you don’t know what that tax treaty entails, it simply means that all French companies working in Senegal 🇸🇳 will not be paying taxes to the Senegalese government, but would rather pay their taxes to their home country France 🇫🇷. It’s the same tax treaty in all Francophone countries!Insanity!

Canadian officials still haven't seen intelligence linking UN's Gaza aid agency with Hamas: sources

https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/unrwa-hamas-gaza-canada-1.7107785

The government of Canada did not see any evidence backing up Israel's claim that staff employed by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) colluded with Hamas before suspending funding to the agency, CBC News has learned.

Government sources tell CBC that Israel still has not shared evidence with Canada to substantiate its claim that 12 employees of UNRWA were involved in some capacity in the October 7 attack on Israel by Hamas and the affiliated group Islamic Jihad.

Britain's Channel Four News earlier this week obtained a copy of a dossier that the government of Israel shared with the U.K. government, which also cut funding to UNRWA.

Channel Four reported that the dossier was only six pages long. The news service said it rehashes long-standing Israeli government complaints about UNRWA and alleges the involvement of UNRWA staff in the Oct 7 attack, but "provides no evidence" to back up Israel's explosive allegations against the agency.

"From intelligence information, documents and identity cards seized during the course of the fighting, it is now possible to flag around 190 Hamas and PIJ (Palestinian Islamic Jihad) terrorist operatives who serve as UNRWA employees. More than 10 UNRWA staffers took apart in the events of October 7," the paper says.

The report includes photographs of 12 UNRWA employees it claims were involved, but does not provide the information or documents it mentions to substantiate those claims, Channel Four reported.

Israel has refused to provide the intelligence it says backs up its allegations, either to UNRWA or to the UN Office of Internal Oversight Services (OIOS), the UN body assigned to investigate.

"I don't think we need to give intelligence information. This would reveal sources in the operation," Lior Haiat, a spokesperson for Israel's foreign ministry, told France 24.

That statement appeared to contradict a tweet by Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz on Monday which pledged that Israel "will submit all evidence highlighting UNRWA's ties to terrorism and its harmful effects on regional stability."

UNRWA moved quickly to fire 12 individual staff members on January 26, as soon as Israel made its allegations.

"To protect the Agency's ability to deliver humanitarian assistance, I have taken the decision to immediately terminate the contracts of these staff members and launch an investigation in order to establish the truth without delay," said Philippe Lazzarini, UNRWA commissioner-general.

UNRWA spokesperson Juliette Touma said the agency acted to fire the staff immediately because of the seriousness and timing of the allegations — not because it had credible evidence against them.

"The commissioner-general of UNRWA did this in the best interests of the agency, due to the huge risks both to the reputation of the agency and also the largest humanitarian operation in response to the Gaza war," she told Channel Four News.

She said the firings were intended to reassure donor nations and forestall drastic actions.

Canadian officials told CBC News that Canada's own decision to defund was a reaction to UNRWA's decision to dismiss the staffers, which created the impression that the agency saw Israel's allegation as credible.

Israel alleges 0.001% of UNRWA staff participated in Oct 7 -> UNRWA immediately fires alleged conspirators, due to the seriousness of allegations, despite lack of evidence, in an effort to reassure donors -> donors cut funding to UNRWA, claiming UNRWA response lent credibility to allegations
