Listed on Patreon at the moment, but not yet on the homepage or in the private RSS feed. I got an email notification about the new eps via Patreon, so presumably theyโ€™ll be available everywhere else shortly. The episodes are a combined 6h 45m!

I hope this doesnโ€™t break any rules for this community. This podcast is about as non-sensational and well-researched as any journalistic article on historical topics, so this seemed like the best audience.

(Iโ€™m deliberately off Lemmy due to social issues in my country for the sake of my mental health. The mobile page on my instance doesnโ€™t show the rules and Iโ€™m signing out right after posting this. Apologies if this was a prohibited post. Please feel free to repost somewhere else if needed as I wonโ€™t be logged in to see replies from mods or others.)

Enjoy! I know I will. Love this show. Best wishes to all history nerds reading this.

(Screenshot to validate claims about the eps and their length.)

"OIG Investigators found that the DEA paid one airline employee tens of thousands of dollars over the past several years in proceeds from cash seized as a result of their tips. However, the vast majority of those airport seizures aren't accompanied by criminal prosecutions. This has led to years of complaints from civil liberties groups that the DEA is abusing civil asset forfeitureโ€”a practice that allows police to seize cash and other property suspected of being connected to criminal activity such as drug trafficking, even if the owner is never arrested or charged with a crime."

In addition, Wright also was inspired by reading "The Seventh Sally", a short story from The Cyberiad by Stanisล‚aw Lem, in which an engineer encounters a deposed tyrant, and creates a miniature city with artificial citizens for the tyrant to oppress.

If you have not read The Cyberiad, I cannot recommend it enough as a work of comic science fiction.

The main protagonists of the stories are Trurl and Klapaucius, two "constructor" robots who travel the galaxy, constructing fantastic machines. Nearly every character is either a humanoid robot or some sort of intelligent machine, with few living creatures ever appearing. These robots have for the most part organized themselves into proto-feudal societies with strict ranks and structures. The timeline of each story is relatively constrained, with the majority of the individual tales following one or both of the two protagonists as they find and aid civilizations and people in need of their creations, advice, or intervention. Though the thematic content of the stories is broad, most focus on problems of the individual and society, as well as on the vain search for human happiness through technological means.

If you haven't read Stanislaw Lem at all and you like science fiction, read Stanislaw Lem. He will blow your mind.

Consider the words on the screen. There are two sources of information.

  1. The words, how they're arranged and such.

  2. The meaning that you assign to the words. Meaning drawn from a lifetime of memories.

99% of the information comes from the assigned meaning. So 99% of what's going on here is you talking to yourself.

A British man admitted on Friday that he carried out an arson attack on a London commercial property linked to Ukraine, and that he had accepted pay from a foreign intelligence agency, in a case prosecutors have linked to Russia.

Jake Reeves, 22, pleaded guilty at London's Woolwich Crown Court to charges of aggravated arson on the premises belonging to a "Mr X" on an industrial estate in east London in March.

He also admitted a charge under Britain's new National Security Act (NSA) of obtaining a material benefit from a foreign intelligence service.

He denied a further charge under the NSA of engaging in preparations for an act endangering the life of a person or creating serious risk to the health or safety of the public, and prosecutors said they would not pursue that charge.

Last month another man, Dylan Earl, 20, also admitted carrying out the arson attack. He pleaded guilty to a preparatory act under the NSA, which was brought in last year to crack down on hostile activity by foreign states.
