First appointment with the clinic is this morning! I'm excited and nervous but I think it will be good. The clinic staff was very good when I scheduled the appointment and I think most of my nerves are thinking I need to come out to a heterocis dr. Justify how I'm queer enough to need hormones.
Which isn't what is happening. The place is staffed with a lot of queer folks. And uses an informed consent model when it comes to hormones.
That's good! I hope it continues to go well, and it's so exciting that you're closer to getting them already!
My experience with informed consent is you go there and be like 'hey dude I am totally getting hormones!' at which point they say 'no way, radical! happy for you tbh!' and then talk a bit about what the funny meds do and you sign some papers. Very low intensity.
kind of related, i transitioned like a long time ago and it was very gatekeepery and i remember memorizing childhood facts in exactly the way they wanted in order to get access ... but none of that mattered once i told them i was doing diy lol, then they wrote me a prescription
yesterday i had a meeting with a nurse about getting a referral to the bottom surgery place and she started with a speech about how "getting gender affirming care has historically been gatekept by cis providers" and straight-up said she was going to do the referral for me regardless of the conversation, certainly eased the tone of the whole convo. (to be fair i wasn't expecting gatekeeping)
times have changed i think!
Yeah today she wanted to know like how long I had had these feelings of gender non-conformity. But she said it was mostly so if I need a referral later on for surgery we have that date tracked.
So yeah times have definitely changed, and I'm thankful to live in a state that's not enacting a whole bunch of fascist laws.
