Well, Iran and their allies' response may happen sometime this week and apparently they aren't talking to the US in order to negotiate how and where they will hit Israel (and Shoigu arrived in Tehran rather auspiciously), the Bangladeshi government just fell, F16s have been given to Ukraine, there are fascist riots in the UK, and Japan just had its worst stock fall since 1987 and seems to be taking several other countries/corporations with it. I don't really know where to look right now.
The COTW (Country of the Week) label is designed to spur discussion and debate about a specific country every week in order to help the community gain greater understanding of the domestic situation of often-understudied nations. If you've wanted to talk about the country or share your experiences, but have never found a relevant place to do so, now is your chance! However, don't worry - this is still a general news megathread where you can post about ongoing events from any country.
The Country of the Week is Iraq! Feel free to chime in with books, essays, longform articles, even stories and anecdotes or rants. More detail here.

Israel-Palestine Conflict
Sources on the fighting in Palestine against Israel. In general, CW for footage of battles, explosions, dead people, and so on:
UNRWA daily-ish reports on Israel's destruction and siege of Gaza and the West Bank.
English-language Palestinian Marxist-Leninist twitter account. Alt here.
English-language twitter account that collates news (and has automated posting when the person running it goes to sleep).
Arab-language twitter account with videos and images of fighting.
English-language (with some Arab retweets) Twitter account based in Lebanon. - Telegram is @IbnRiad.
English-language Palestinian Twitter account which reports on news from the Resistance Axis. - Telegram is @EyesOnSouth.
English-language Twitter account in the same group as the previous two. - Telegram here.
English-language PalestineResist telegram channel.
More telegram channels here for those interested.
Various sources that are covering the Ukraine conflict are also covering the one in Palestine, like Rybar.
Russia-Ukraine Conflict
Examples of Ukrainian Nazis and fascists
Examples of racism/euro-centrism during the Russia-Ukraine conflict
Sources:
Defense Politics Asia's youtube channel and their map. Their youtube channel has substantially diminished in quality but the map is still useful.
Moon of Alabama, which tends to have interesting analysis. Avoid the comment section.
Understanding War and the Saker: reactionary sources that have occasional insights on the war.
Alexander Mercouris, who does daily videos on the conflict. While he is a reactionary and surrounds himself with likeminded people, his daily update videos are relatively brainworm-free and good if you don't want to follow Russian telegram channels to get news. He also co-hosts The Duran, which is more explicitly conservative, racist, sexist, transphobic, anti-communist, etc when guests are invited on, but is just about tolerable when it's just the two of them if you want a little more analysis.
On the ground: Patrick Lancaster, an independent and very good journalist reporting in the warzone on the separatists' side.
Unedited videos of Russian/Ukrainian press conferences and speeches.
Pro-Russian Telegram Channels:
Again, CW for anti-LGBT and racist, sexist, etc speech, as well as combat footage.
https://t.me/aleksandr_skif ~ DPR's former Defense Minister and Colonel in the DPR's forces. Russian language.
https://t.me/Slavyangrad ~ A few different pro-Russian people gather frequent content for this channel (~100 posts per day), some socialist, but all socially reactionary. If you can only tolerate using one Russian telegram channel, I would recommend this one.
https://t.me/s/levigodman ~ Does daily update posts.
https://t.me/patricklancasternewstoday ~ Patrick Lancaster's telegram channel.
https://t.me/gonzowarr ~ A big Russian commentator.
https://t.me/rybar ~ One of, if not the, biggest Russian telegram channels focussing on the war out there. Actually quite balanced, maybe even pessimistic about Russia. Produces interesting and useful maps.
https://t.me/epoddubny ~ Russian language.
https://t.me/boris_rozhin ~ Russian language.
https://t.me/mod_russia_en ~ Russian Ministry of Defense. Does daily, if rather bland updates on the number of Ukrainians killed, etc. The figures appear to be approximately accurate; if you want, reduce all numbers by 25% as a 'propaganda tax', if you don't believe them. Does not cover everything, for obvious reasons, and virtually never details Russian losses.
https://t.me/UkraineHumanRightsAbuses ~ Pro-Russian, documents abuses that Ukraine commits.
Pro-Ukraine Telegram Channels:
Almost every Western media outlet.
https://discord.gg/projectowl ~ Pro-Ukrainian OSINT Discord.
https://t.me/ice_inii ~ Alleged Ukrainian account with a rather cynical take on the entire thing.
The amount of people wanting to cozy up to the Dems now is too damn high.
VPs have the ability to do literally nothing while simultaneously having the ability to massively affect the outcome of the election or something.
The duality of man.
Just a guy chosen in an attempt to wash kamala of being a pro israel cop lol. And it will work for a lot of people
The VP doesn't do anything in office, but the position does raise the profile of the person occupying it. Joe Biden wouldn't be the president if he weren't Obama's VP, and there is no way Kamala Harris would be the current Democratic nominee if she weren't Biden's VP (or if there were a competitive primary to replace Biden, but I digress). The decision doesn't affect policy, but it does have an impact on who in the party is going to wield influence going forward. To that extent, the decision does and should affect the election outcome to some degree.
I think it's easy to dismiss the VP selection as totally meaningless since it barely even matters who the president is at this point, but within the framework of electoralism, there is an argument that it's worth something.
The dems are gonna slaughter the Midwest regrettably
Walz is a pro-israel National Guard Fully Mobilized to Crush Dissent over Cop Murder guy.
: |
That's part for the course for both parties though. People straight up don't care or think it's justified unless you were actually there. I was. I assume you were too.
We will never forgive these fucks for sending the boots. Neither will other people who really saw the shits.
Shit I remember in 2020 some stupid fucking libs at a protest literally told me "no it's not their fault, they don't even want to be here!" When me and my partner were screaming quite visceral insults at national guard boots deployed in the city. These fucking people are so fuckin stupid that they will lick the boot deployed right in front of them to squash the very thing they were "participating" in. Which of course we screamed back at them and told them to get the fuck out.
Memory is burned into my brain.
Anyway sorry for ranting lol the 2020 protests were uhhhh a lot.
Honestly it's reassuring to hear other people remember how fucked things were. Seeing so many people online celebrating walz has been bad for my brain health and i appreciate you stepping in with a reality reminder.
Yeah, it's fucking wild (not to mention incredibly disheartening), people in the West really seem so desperate for a cope that things can get better through the ballot box that they'll bury their heads in the sand even if they were relatively on the money about stuff a couple of months ago when was still running.
I dislike how the media finally took a liking to the term "Blue MAGA" as a stand-in for Biden "cultists." The farce at the core of MAGA is the belief that we can turn back time, reverse entropy, and return to a golden age age when America wasn't woke and you could pay for medical school by mowing lawns. This was mirrored deeply in the psyche of post-Trump Liberals, who wished we could turn back time, reverse entropy, and return to a golden age when 'politics' was fundamentally about compromise, and our institutions dutifully and nobly carried out the missions stated in their charters.
The core, common critique here is that both are deeply nostalgic for an age which never existed. In their hands they hold a pile of ashes, and they are convinced that, with the grace of God, they can turn it back into a tree. And they keep getting upset when people try to tell them those ashes came from a garbage incinerator.
Fantastic post
I have a longer comment about this in this thread, but personally I’m just glad to see the Zionist Shapiro eat shit. Of course I’m not saying the Democratic Party is now embracing Palestinian liberation, but it looks like winds are changing - not in principles, but in messaging. It’s starting to look to me that the DNC might actually be a bit afraid of the pro-Palestine movement, or at least recognize how deeply unpopular actions from recent months have been. Worth keeping an eye on is all.
They are probably doing this in part to disrupt the pro-Palestine movement, they will not cede an inch of ground
just add them to the lib list. we all have one of those right, very normal thing that we all do
Idk whether I'm going to spend the next few months screaming about how evil white Minnesotan culture is or log off for my own health.
