I work in a queer culturally-specific organization and it makes shit so much worse when we do harm. I'm having a bit of a crisis about it all.
cw sexual harassment, familial abuse, racism
I reported a client for repeated sexual harassment, and rather than ending services, my coworkers convinced his homeless sister to sign a lease where she pays his rent while continuing to live homeless herself. We had known about and documented several instances of abusive behavior before this, but they still went through with it.
Then we had a staff meeting where my boss said we could "speak freely and without consequences" and a coworker reference "whistling at white women" when I said I didn't appreciate being called "babygirl" and having my body commented on during every case meeting. Apparently I just can't take a compliment.
There's a lot that happens here that's like "lmao I'm sure glad right wing media doesn't know what's going on in here", but this actually shook me, and the accusations had me self-critting all weekend about my response to being sexually harassed.
I'm so sorry you're going through that

Not for profits can suck ASS. They press so hard on you to work for way less than you're worth, because it's for a good cause and aren't you a good person? In your case, you have to work with a very vulnerable population and being vulnerable and traumatized does not mean a person comes out super respectful on the other side - which is a common unspoken myth in the charmed circle/inside the wire/among God's beautiful children. That trauma makes one somehow wiser or stronger in some way, well sometimes it just leaves you emptier and sometimes people cope by becoming very shitty or sometimes people's brains get damaged in such a way that they don't have a filter between urge and action anymore. And you'd think your coworkers would be in solidarity with you, but nooooooooo sometimes you get a tight knit group of warriors leaning on eachother and sometimes you get what you experienced.
You do not deserve to be treated the way you were, it has to stop right now or you should think about leaving. You were harassed, yes people with the "best" intentions can harass you, people who run not for profits can harass you, they need to be corrected and humbled or they need to not work in the space. You deserve to be treated with respect by your coworkers and clients/care population. You do not need to burn yourself to keep other people warm, you will do more for them long term by working in an org with basic human decency. Part of how this whole sick patriarchal thing works is making victims feel crazy for perceiving, correctly, that they have been slighted or abused.
And you'd think giving all you have would be enough but some people take more including the "right" to comment how they want to. Well they don't have that.
