“So what if we burn down the government. What are ya gonna do? Impeach us?”

[–] [email protected] 11 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I don’t think they realize that if the government burns down, there’s nothing to stop the beheadings.

I don’t want beheadings. I want a functioning government. Unfortunately, not everyone is a pacifist.

What's amazing to me about the people who are facilitating the downfall of democracy on behalf of their oligarch and demagogue buddies is that they've deluded themselves into believing that they will still be of use, once democracy is good and dead.

If you're looking to murder democracy, you need accomplices, people in positions of power within the existing government to help get the job done. But once it's done, what do you need those accomplices for anymore? If anything, they're just loose ends for you to tidy up within your full-on fascistic government.

The Teds Cruz and Clarences Thomas of the world serve a purpose in helping achieve a hateful goal, but once they've outlived their usefulness, they will absolutely be made to disappear, if for no other reason than because they know too much.

They're basically setting up a scenario whereby they will either be facing an angry mob for their role in attempting to kill democracy, or else they will be facing a purification squad once they successfully replace democracy.

Not great on long-term planning, if you ask me.

There is no ivory tower tall enough to avoid the political implications of the court’s decision.

That's damningly naïve, given how this gestures at the entirety of US politics works..

There’s a system in place, it just hasn’t been successfully used in the history of our nation.

Justice Samuel Chase was the only impeachment in Supreme Court history. He was acquitted by the Senate in 1805, and served until his death.

With the potential for many abstentions in the November election, and 33 Senate seats on the ballot, it’s possible for Republicans to take control of Congress. That would essentially ensure immunity for SCOTUS.

They won't know what the constitutional originalism says about this one until November.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I know what constitutional originalism says.

The question is whether they think they can get away with not even doing that without being hanged.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 months ago

Unfortunately the person most likely to hang them is Donald, if they hand him a Long Knife. Even despite the corruption and treason they'll have zero consequences unless they anger a petulant manchild who is allowed to kill on a whim.

The three branches of government as a whole are playing with fire right now.

  • Judiciary - all but completely illegitimate at this point
  • Legislative - gop is a self-sabotaging, do nothing death cult with a majority due to gerrymandering and decades long attack on general education quantity and availability
  • Executive - trump is a convicted felon/rapist and Biden and team have all the good will in the world and they are eroding it for indefensible Israel support.

Register and vote. Biden is an entirely different universe than trump and it's not even close. Defeat trump to save democracy and then organize/demonstrate and hold Biden to account (they actually respond to pressure from constituents at scale).

I cannot believe we are having to rely on an exit strategy from ACB

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 months ago

The only reason the SC hasn't ruled for a Trump immunity is that it would also be giving a green light for Biden to do whatever he wanted with impunity.

Drawing out the statute of limitations?

[–] [email protected] 12 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Waiting to see if they're backing the new dictator coming to power or putting down the narcissistic pariah who lost.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 2 months ago

And if they say the President does have immunity before the election then Biden would be free to exercise that new "freedom" to suppress the opposition or find some other way to hamstring the new admin.
