On the 24th of october in 1975, approximately 90% of Icelandic women struck for equality, not attending jobs or doing any domestic work. Iceland passed an equal pay law the following year, but the strike has been repeated on its anniversary several times since, such as in the years 2005, 2010, and 2016.

The strike was planned by "The Women's Congress", which had met on June 20th and 21st earlier that year. Among the reasons given for going on strike were pay inequality, lack of women in union leadership, and a general lack of recognition for the value and skill of domestic labor.

During the work stoppage, also known as "Women's Day Off", 25,000 people gathered in Reykjavik, Iceland's capital city, for a rally. There, women listened to speakers, sang, and talked to each other about what could be done to achieve gender equality in Iceland.

Women from many different backgrounds spoke, including a housewife, two members of parliament, and a worker. The last speech of the day was by Aðalheiður Bjarnfreðsdóttir, who "represented Sókn, the trade union for the lowest paid women in Iceland", according to The Guardian.

In 1976, the Icelandic government passed an equal pay law, and the country elected its first female President, Vigdís Finnbogadóttir, five years later in 1980.

The 1975 Women's Strike also helped inspire the 2016 "Black Monday" anti-abortion ban protests in Poland, as well as the "International Women's Strike", single day work stoppages on March 8th, 2017 and 2018.

Not important to make this it's own post but hexbear has defederated from jlai.lu due to an overwhelming amount of their users being reactionary, no efforts from their moderators or admins to address this and above all else not having any important communities. Apologies to any french speaking hexbear users that did use their instance.

Browsing /all the 3 main active languages I saw were english, portuguese, and french. Always sad to miss out on non anglo views (imo) but yeah their lefty channels were lukewarm at best, wasnt really aware of the issues but it seems like this was a good decision

Hey since you guys have customized this instance a lot, is there any chance you know how to implement (re-implement?) a mute button? You know if I just don't want to see people's posts in the feed or notifications, but also don't want to make their replies to me invisible. The block feature on here is almost as useless as Telegram's no offense (at least it hides things).

My current workaround is RSS filtering everyone annoying, spammy, and several words related to "OH BOY BIG NEWS ABOUT TRUMP/KAMALA" posting

To quote a sage blessed with wisdom well beyond his years, blocking is an act of hate, muting is love.

Of course nobody likes feature requests so just seeing if this appeals to any of you hah hah

A 19 year old got literally cooked to death in an industrial oven working at the Wal Mart near me. There isn't even a boycott on the store, no.news story is pointing out someone is clearly to blame here, it's just being viewed as this unavoidable tragedy. They died in a walk-in oven at a store I've been to and can say with certainty that ive never seen hot or baked in store food for sale.

[–] [email protected] 15 points 1 month ago

CW death I remember a similar story from 20years ago...where two workers died because they were sent down a conveyer belt to repair a bread making machine, that was meant to have cooled for 12 hrs but only had been left for 2hrs. They couldn't reverse the conveyor belt and had walkie talkies to plead for help. Just horrific https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-60734/Workers-baked-alive-bread-factory-horror.html

One good thing about Hasan is that I can tell how far-right someone is if they describe him or his community as “insane” or “tankie.” Anyone who’s spent enough time in that community knows how liberal it is.

Having seen people write in Brandon for 2024 I've become convinced that that is conceptually the funnier option over writing in Hilldog (which was definitely the peak comedy option back in 2020) but that bastard still owes me 600 bucks so fuck him

I feel like sci-fi settings tend to forget that planets are, like... very big. A planet can have multiple different biomes. A planet can be occupied by many different factions in different locations. In so many sci-fi stories, you have planets that are basically just one location, you have desert planets, jungle planets, city planets and they never take advantage of the full scale of a planet.

Get this, they recently discovered a planet where there are deserts, jungles and cities! On the same celestial body!

Ngl it's kinda wild how unbelievably abstract finance has become. Like the concept of trading shares is already making the solid into air, but I'm gonna bring Marx back to life to show him my index funds in my fancy app where all the context I get is a green line or red line and the company who oversees it owns a significant chunk of the entire global financial market.

I turned on my TV, and they showed an episode of NCIS: Los Angeles in which they go after a fascist organization. They went up to their headquarters to talk to one of the chuds there who was spouting your typical anti-immigration rhetoric, and that's when I spotted a flag on the wall that had the Azov logo on it. leo-point I never watch this show, so I looked up the episode's date, and apparently it's an episode from 2015. Yeah, that tracks.

Diet tip for my fellow people who are trying to lose weight:

Taking a huge whiff of crushed red pepper effectively stifles my appetite, for some reason, even though I love crushed red pepper. I have used this trick many times when struggling not to give in to cravings.

I should've tried to stay on academia. Community colleges pay decently in Canada and I think I would've gotten a spot after a few post-docs. Also, I would've enjoyed doing post-docs. Corporate work is making me miserable and that misery extends well into my personal life.

I think I'm burning out. Feels like I've got a thousand things going on at work. And I don't usually have trouble checking spreadsheets even though its not something I have to often, but my head is spinning from all the info I'm trying to validate. Taking my break now and trying to see if I can gather myself and get organized to see if that helps.

There's this rich person in my circle and whenever I get invited to their house I experience this profound sense of relief, comfort, and detachment from the world as I pull into their driveway. It's really nice but extremely unnerving.

[–] [email protected] 18 points 2 months ago (2 children)

I feel a severe sense of anxiety and hatred when I'm around rich people. All I can think about is my childhood and the shit we dealt with.

Woah, I just had an experience like this. It's a lifestyle that felt attainable just because I I know someone who "did it" but you'd have to ignore so many other things going on to actually put it in motion. Altered my brain a bit stepping inside their place.
