$154k and it's not visibly falling apart. Is there something wrong with Rochester? Or is it bumfuck nowhere?

[-] [email protected] 23 points 8 months ago

It's probably more stagnant/shrinking population that necessarily something explicitly wrong with it. It's like a midsized city and what's nearby are other midsized cities with probably similar population trends. Not close enough to NYC to be a commuter city. I think the usual pressures for housing prices are regional population growth or getting somehow becoming another city's de facto suburb.

Its not a growing place, but it is probably due for ppl to move back. Its got an old town core and low prices.

I went to college in Rochester and stayed for a total of about 15 years - the housing market didn't crash in 2008 because it never was booming in the first place.

Now I'm in the Midwest with racist assholes and over priced homes. If it weren't for the 9-10 months of non-stop overcast weather, I'd strongly consider moving back to Rochester and keep working remotely.

yeonmi-park IN COMNUMUNST KORTH NOREA ALL HOUSING BORING GREY

[-] [email protected] 22 points 8 months ago

I don't get why grey is bad? People can...decorate their homes with colourful stuff, paintings and rugs and things?

Also, that price, wow. That seems very cheap for the US, I thought houses over there routinely went up into the 7 figure range.

it's like having light mode on but for your entire house

oh god oh fuck 🤮

most of us don't want to live in what looks like a mental health ward. i agree with the other poster who said the floor is the real problem. my childhood home was off white walls and a white ceiling in the main rooms but we had carpet, curtains, and doors that were different colors

[-] [email protected] 12 points 8 months ago

I'm lining the walls and floors with mattresses and you can't stop me

[-] [email protected] 10 points 8 months ago

That's half the price you see here in aus, wild

[-] [email protected] 8 points 8 months ago

Yeah, that's what's blowing my mind. I always thought their houses were way more expensive than ours.

[-] [email protected] 10 points 8 months ago

It varies wildly by location. My grandma's home is valued at like 600k~ and is a modest 3 bedroom home that was built in the 50s.

[-] [email protected] 5 points 8 months ago

That would be like $1.5M here lol.

[-] [email protected] 5 points 8 months ago

Oh no we've been in a bubble for decades tbh, shit's overvalued to the extreme. I think gearing the market toward investment rather than home ownership has gone a long way to putting housing up on this financial pedestal. Fuck, $150k wouldn't even get you a deposit on some places here

I like grey, but that shade of light gray is kind of an eyesore. Granted, I can barely afford my apartment in an "eehhhh" part of town.

[-] [email protected] 6 points 8 months ago

In fairness photos on real estate sites are typically photoshopped to shit to look brighter, so it's almost certainly not that bright.

And hell, after living in landlord specials (all white all the time, baybeeeee) for my adult life I'd take that in a heartbeat.

[-] [email protected] 16 points 8 months ago

The only thing I find offputting is the floor. I think grey and off-white are fine for walls. I find that strong colors on walls hurt my eyes and just give like almost a burn-in effect. I prefer off-white with just paintings and decorations, so really see not much wrong with this. The fact that it's empty is really what stands out. Throw on a persian rug, a few paintings and some furniture and it'll look fine.

So my tasteful Gundam Wing wall scrolls?

@[email protected] Gundam has been mentioned, you must be summoned!

Monochromatic? More like achromatic. Jesus.

[-] [email protected] 12 points 8 months ago

The beige exterior looks worse than the interior IMO.

[-] [email protected] 11 points 8 months ago

$154K? Cool. Now you can clear PMI in my area.

[-] [email protected] 10 points 8 months ago

Why is it called millennial grey? This is the minimalist shit Boomers and Gen X have been doing since 2008

Pretty cheap to live in Pleasantville.
