Official Title of this Community: Ethnic Minorities and People of Color

Why is the title different?

We like to have fun here.

What is this place? A safe space for underrepresented peoples and peoples of color to talk, chill, and vibe.

What are the basic rules of the community?

  1. Follow Lemmy TOS and Community Guidelines. Non negotiable. This is the bedrock and mods will make decisions with this always in mind.

  2. This community is for ethnic minorities and people of color. This is a safe space where such people can freely discuss their struggles, insight, and thoughts without fear. If you are not, we respectfully ask you do not post or comment here. A future community will be established to allow for racial discussions with a mixed userbase. However, remember, comments here must still respect Lemmy TOS and Community Guidelines.

  3. Irony Racism is still racism. Racism is bad m'kay? We will treat irony racism and bad faith racist satire as racism. Will wield the ban hammer accordingly.

  4. No sectarianism: This is an identity channel not a channel for you all to complain about why XYZ isn't the "one true leftism". Take that to another place.

  5. Stupidpol is not allowed. Stupidpol is class reductionist. We are an identity community. Thinking like stupidpol ignores the struggles of the oppressed, their voices, and their need for unique support. Nothing says oppression more than someone saying that the identity you have is "not real" and that if you only thought like them you'd see what your "real" identity is. Mods reserve the right to ban users and content who promote stupidpol, stupidpol memes, and other class reductionist thinking.

FAQ

I don't look XYZ and/or sometimes I can pass as white so I don't know if I can post here. Can I?

What can I post?

In-laws are visiting and times like this remind me how much Asians and Latinas have in common. Both are heavily sexualized and viewed as tradwives when in reality they’re very dominant in the household lol

[–] [email protected] 4 points 5 months ago

I'm Latino and I can attest to this.

I keep reading the thread title as "EPIC POC WEEKLY THREAD." Every time.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 5 months ago

That's also accurate

[–] [email protected] 3 points 5 months ago

It's only true.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 5 months ago (1 children)

I'm also in what can be described as a malaise.

Driving is much fun. Like you get to go to places that you want to and you can bring friends.

It's so fun to drive in a country where owning a car is mandatory for living.

I love sharing the road with minitrucks large enough to crush children and drivers who try to cut you off all the time.

No adequate public transportation system in most places in America? Thats fine, it's just how its done here, don't question it at all.

Anyway driving is fun

[–] [email protected] 5 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Being in a car gives me a headache but I guess that's the price I pay shrug-outta-hecks

I... legit can't tell if you're being jokey or not.

I'm Autistic and have dysgraphia so, err, yeah.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago) (1 children)

I think it would clarify if they put a /s... I didn't know it initially as well... it's a lead up to a joke at the end

[–] [email protected] 3 points 5 months ago

Ah!

Good point

[–] [email protected] 11 points 5 months ago (3 children)

I'm talking to this white leftist on discord who clearly is struggling through some white feelings and lib tendencies, but it's so annoying when they ask me for validation that they're not a bad person for being white or a settler lmao. Why do they think I should be the one to tell them they're a good person and listen to them feel guilty for being white. Why can't they find another white person for that.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago) (1 children)

You don't want them talking to the kind of white person who assures them they're good for being white. I get the frustration with being a kind of race based sin eater though.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago) (1 children)

lol true, can’t trust white people to handle this stuff responsibly.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 5 months ago

can’t trust white people

True

[–] [email protected] 7 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago) (1 children)

Nobody should feel guilty for being white, tbh.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 5 months ago (1 children)

It's annoying, like oh cool you learned about colonialism and the evils of western empires... but instead of protesting and organizing or spreading awareness you picked asking a random POC on the internet for forgiveness????

[–] [email protected] 4 points 5 months ago

Yeah

I don't want a white person kissing my feat just 'cause they feel guilty, you know?

You didn't ask to be born white, but you can at least help out, you know?

[–] [email protected] 9 points 5 months ago (3 children)

not a huge fan of this comic being a meme on here tbh. the yellow peril stereotypes are just really overt in this one. i don't mind laughing at the stereotypes but i don't enjoy watching white people identify with them when this comic employs them unironically (the "brainwashed" look and the conical hat especially.) Idk, I'm glad that hexbear doesn't despise China like most places on the internet, but I just don't find this comic funny. maybe i'm being too sensitive?

[–] [email protected] 9 points 5 months ago

Nah, it definitely misses the mark. The stereotypes don't really add anything to the joke. I think most people would have gotten what he was saying if it was just the kid dancing on the American flag and holding a Chinese flag.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 5 months ago

Tbh i dont particularly like the guys comics and hes a lib dean-frown

[–] [email protected] 3 points 5 months ago

Eh, you're not being too sensitive. Frankly, we could use some sensitivity.

People need to stop tolerating bullshit, especially stuff like that.

I’ve reached the point where I’m more bored with white supremacy than angry at it. Saw two left-identifying white people online debating whether or not it’s classist not to let white working class people say the n-word because apparently black workers share more in common with white racists than other black people. Weird part is that this isn’t even the first or second time I’ve heard this argument.

Feels like my life ended and that I’m just watching reruns :/

[–] [email protected] 6 points 5 months ago (1 children)

God, white people just say the n word if you want to say it so bad stop making up these useless scenarios. Just be ready to accept whatever consequence you get, which will be deserved regardless of if it's an ass beating or firing.

So boring

[–] [email protected] 3 points 5 months ago

Agreed. This however will never not be funny.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 5 months ago (1 children)

I've honestly never heard this, admittedly I'm not around that many white people but this sounds like such a weird debate. Like, just don't fucking say it.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 5 months ago

Irony bros across the political spectrum wanna say the word without fear of repercussions.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 5 months ago

Talking about south Africa online is how you spot who'll call you a slur

Just saw a Lemmy Lib pull the whole "As an Asian, is not racist."

Comrades of Color, is this a thing in your community too? How can they be so confident that the leopards they're defending will not end up eating their faces?

[–] [email protected] 7 points 5 months ago

"as an indian I find this funny" comment under a video of continuous racial slurs towards indian people mfs

[–] [email protected] 5 points 5 months ago

Unfortunately most of the people I'm around (work/family) right now think this way.I fucking hate it. I've gotten really upset about it a few times and tried to convince them why they shouldn't be so nonchalant about things like this, but it doesn't matter. No one listens.

I'm starting to get calls setup for interviews but I'm torn between just sticking out where I currently am until world events say otherwise (which feels like soonish), or actually working on developing my career(which is honestly something I do to pass time and be marketable and the second I don't need to pay rent anymore I'm leaving the industry).

[–] [email protected] 6 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Feeling very meh. Felt burned out towards the end of last week. Still feeling it a bit now, but better. That being said, aside from pushing aside some work, I kind of just pushed through it. Still feel like I need some time away from work even though I took some time off recently. I've got plenty of PTO. I just don't want it to end up like every other vacation I've taken where I don't really do much of anything. I feel like I'm kind of stuck in the daily routine. Its been a while since I've hung out with coworkers or friends.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Are you Latino, btw?

I need another LatAm friend here.

I took lots of L-theanine and felt... despair for some reason.

Isn't L-theanine suppose to calm you down or fight anxiety and depression?

I took it with ashwagandha (which usually does help me).

3rd strike has hands. Old games not having a buffer is wild

[–] [email protected] 6 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Y'know every iteration I try to get into Street Fighter but I can't combo for shit there. Used to have hands in Tekken, used to have hands in BlazBlue, still have hands in MK-- but I just Can't make SF work for me, old school or new school

Foreign Affairs is strangely "leftist" (I say this extremely loosely) in some of its takes and I've used it a few times to convince people of, well, what we believe.
