On this day in 1894, the anti-colonial Donghak Peasant Rebellion began with the "Gobu Uprising", where 1,000 peasants stormed the county of Gobu, freeing prisoners, occupying government buildings, and causing the county ruler to flee.

The Donghak Peasant Rebellion was an uprising that took place in late Joseon-era Korea during the 1890s. "Donghak" refers to a religious movement, founded in 1860, which preached for social equality and the uplifting of the peasantry. Choe Jeu was executed by the state in 1864.

Amidst a backdrop of growing foreign influence in Korea (which would eventually lead to colonization by Japan), Donghak peasants rebelled against oppression by feudal rulers. The uprising began in the county of Gobu in Jeolla province, where the magistrate had extorted vast amounts of wealth and forced the peasants to build a reservoir.

On January 10th, 1894, approximately 1,000 peasant rebels gathered at an empty horse ranch, from which they split off into two separate armies where they successfully destroyed three of Gobu's four gates, occupied government offices, and set about destroying prisons and freeing the people held in them.

As rebels successfully defeated government forces, unrest would spread across the country, and the panicked Joseon dynasty called for Chinese Qing dynasty for support. Doing this, however, aggrieved the Japanese government, which was competing with China for influence over Korea.

Japan invaded Korea, occupying Seoul, triggering the First Sino-Japanese War. Following a temporary truce, the peasant rebellion would resume in October, this time directed towards the Japanese occupation.

The Japanese proved successful in defeating the uprising, however, continuing to quell rebels through 1895. Korea would become increasingly absorbed into Japan's sphere of influence before official annexation in 1910.

Never really how much the rest of Lemmy hates this instance until I went into NATO Leftist central and they're accusing this place of being transphobic by proxy and a combination of 4chan and Twitter.

I'm sorry, but maybe there is some merit to younger people being soft if they think this place is anywhere near the level of toxic that 4chan had in the 2000's.

Hexbear should stop being just a site on the internet and start digging a tunnel of our own.

Update on the lemmydrama concerning blahaj and programming dev, they arent going to defederate but the post got filled by blajah users saying they are ok with transphobia if it means they stay federated with other instances.

The programmingdev post is full of attacks against the blahaj zone admin and blajah people saying they are the good lgbt people unlike hexbear

hexbear stays winning, when i asked to defederate from SJW for transphobia, hexbear's response was largely "fuck yeah".

[–] [email protected] 17 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago)

funny how blahaj stopped defederating out of niceness even though the 'good admin' is regularly using words like triggered, making fun of the real problem of misgendering, and posting screenshots of our users while hiding what caused those responses. fair and balanced reporting as always

love to be accused of pretending to be trans, something that definitely isn't mostly leveraged against trans women to accuse them of just being men trying to enter women's spaces! that definitely isn't transphobic at all!

My company just had an existential risk spring out of nowhere and the CEO isn’t aware that he’s using a ChatGPT bot in a public Slack channel to ask it what to do

This is beyond parody, he’s basically asking “how do I save the company”

[–] [email protected] 21 points 7 months ago (1 children)

You need to screenshot this and post. Blur everything out if u need to. Use an alt. Delete this comment. This is too funny.

[–] [email protected] 19 points 7 months ago

The details he’s asking are too revealing sadly

I am screenshotting for after the company goes under though rat-salute-2

Frank Wilhoit: “Conservatism consists of exactly one proposition …There must be in-groups whom the law protects but does not bind, alongside out-groups whom the law binds but does not protect.” This seems increasingly true.

A town a couple of hours from here is threatening a bill that would give homeless people 1000 dollar fines. the folks in the local subreddit aren't nearly as bloodthirsty and psychotic as the average mayostani, which is nice. They don't understand that the fine is not intended to be collected, but rather to create a bench warrant so homeless people can be hunted down and sent to prison.

I keep thinking about how absurd it is that capitalism produces so much surplus of the wrong stuff that all the food sold has a selling point of “we’ve got less than the other guy.” How insane is it that we have so much Sugar, Salt, Calories, fat - things our bodies naturally crave - that the system must artificially reduce the amount of these things. “With 30% less sugar you can gorge yourself without regard for if you’re actually tasting it or anything, without feeling bad about it.” “You may be stuck eating this unhealthy crap because corn and meat is what gets tons of subsidies, but at least now we’re giving you less of it.” It’s so weird. Save us, socialism.

New man-made horror beyond comprehension just dropped. It's an app that helps you locate a bathroom to use (good) but also it locks the bathroom (what?) and you have to pay to "rent" the bathroom (...no) to perform basic bodily functions and you can't use it without having a smart phone (Oh God, why?)

No cruelty is too petty or too evil for capitalists. https://www.flush-app.com/about

Having a good interview and then getting ghosted has killed my job search motivation HOLY SHIT

My sister says it's possible they offered the role to another person first and are waiting to hear back from them so they can offer it to me if the other person declines first, but it's taking too long for even that to be feasible. Plus I tried to follow up with them ASAP in the new year (Jan 2nd of course, new years day would be unreasonable) and got no response. I hate this. It has done more to inflame my suicidal ideation that anything else has in years. God damn it

I was reading about Chinese history yesterday, the Song dynasty to be specific, and holy shit. China damn near almost had an industrial revolution in like the 10th~13th century. Song China produced more steel than 19th century Britain.

But here’s what really blew my fucking mind: how modern Chinese society sounded. There were public libraries and professional sports teams.

Imagine if a Song dynasty industrial revolution (analogous to our history’s industrial revolution in Europe) had happened, and technology advanced at a similar pace; the posting age would have begun in the 1500s or something.

The Hasidic tunnel story is really bad for the Jewish people. Now every time somebody says something wildly antisemitic like "There are Jews inside your walls", you have to take them 100% seriously because it's entirely within the realm of possibility

The South African lawyers have spoken the Gazans’ hearts and minds, carefully describing in detail what is happening here.

Their account is consistent with what we have been reporting since the start of this war. House-by-house attacks, people displaced from one evacuation centre to another, people being sent to safe areas and then being bombed, using starvation as a method of war.

People here are quite hopeful now, despite knowing the fact that once this case reaches the UN Security Council, the US is likely to veto it.

Everybody is surprised by the fact that a group of excellent lawyers brought their plight in detail to the attention of the international community. Something that has never happened before.

So pog that South Africa is doing this. I wish there were a superpower which supported Palestine ussr-cry
