This really had me like:

(In all seriousness, I just went there to upload some images to host privately, as that's the only reason why I keep it around, but my eyes wandered.)

Wow it must be nice to have the luxury to just flee the country, boy I wish I could.

[–] [email protected] 40 points 3 months ago (4 children)

At this point where's even the place to flee?

I'd love to live in Vietnam, beautiful country and there's an expat community, granted it's mostly boomer though so it'd probably be hell.

[–] [email protected] 29 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Extremely beautiful area. Just not sure I could handle the humidity.

and scared of what the area will look like when seas rise

maybe aim for hanoi yeah... I had no idea HCMC was sinking...

lets just say I still would have more faith in vietnam handling sea level rise than say, florida, and I don't think northern vietnam is at risk of wet bulb temps any time too soon, but it would still be hot and humid for a westerner

I've been looking into what it would take to move to China. There's probably better places to live in 2024 but at their current rate by 2050 it'll be a fantastic place to live.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 3 months ago

By 2050 we could be 20 years into socialist "Tired of winning comrades?" (Whatever ends up being the Chinese Pepe) memes.

Fat chance with Switzerland.

  • It's one of the most expensive countries on the planet to live in. For example, rents in the cities are comparable to Washington D.C. and Vancouver, and other living expenses aren't cheap either.
  • The right-wing SVP (racist/isolationist much like Trump) has been the majority party for decades. Hostility against foreign people is high, and immigration is the main scapegoat.
  • Competition on the housing market is extremely high and there are usually dozens of people registering for any given apartment viewing. You'll also be competing with the rest of Europe, especially Germany, France and Italy.

Don't even bother if you haven't got a really well-paying job lined up.

I think my mom's citizenship can get me into Russia? 🤔

99.9% of the people who post this rhetoric have zero serious intentions of moving to a different country (this goes for conservatives who say the same thing). It’s just another form of “the sky is falling!”

What parallel reality do libs live in where you can emigrate at the drop of a hat. It's a long, arduous, dog-shit process, and that's if you're a cishet white yuppie! God help you if you're not.

[–] [email protected] 24 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

The reality is that it's the same people posting the same shit every 4 years.

Judging by the ancient meme, this guy was probably posting about wanting to leave the country if Romney became president.

It's hilarious how Americans think they can simply move to any other country at the drop of a hat. It's easy for us to VISIT most other nations, but permanently moving is a time consuming process in which you have to prove to have some sort of value to their economy. The only shortcuts are marriage or dual citizenship from birth. Or shitloads of cash to bribe your way in. The majority of people who vowed to move to Canada when Trump took office would be rejected, and that's one of the easier nations to emigrate to.

[–] [email protected] 16 points 3 months ago

If an American wants to move to where I live they need to have a job here in advance that either pays USD 70.000 a year or that is on a list of jobs with a labour shortage. Applying alone will cost a USD 1000 fee and they will also need to pay a deposit for mandatory language lessons that they will lose of they don't pass the exam. On top of that comes the significant expenses that comes with moving to another country.

Just moving somewhere else is only an option for those Americans who would be unaffected or benefit from a more authoritarian regime.

Makes me think of the astroturfing kicked off on Imgur at the start of the Russia-Azov War.

Wow, they are still using memes and reaction images from 2010? It's like a time capsule

Is 9gag still around?

[–] [email protected] 20 points 3 months ago (2 children)

My Norwegian friends send me 9gag memes all the time.

2016 nostalgia is the most cringe form of nostalgia

[–] [email protected] 15 points 3 months ago

I remember a community college professor I had who used to joke about this in 2016.

[–] [email protected] 15 points 3 months ago

But I thought the libs were going to #ruthkanda #resist, you mean to say the were lying about taking any action outside of a ballot box?
