MODERATORS

Home Plate on Lombard Street in San Francisco has a similar policy, reported SFGate. Signs posted around the restaurant and on the menu asked diners to "Please Drink Responsibly. $50 cleaning fee per person for any incident incur as a result of intoxication."

Other brunch restaurants in the Bay Area use "mimosa fairies," servers devoted to monitoring the intake of guests.

Recently went to a grocery store in the US while visiting family during Rosh hashanah and holy shit, why does everything have alcohol in it now? Alcoholic coffee, alcoholic orange juice, alcoholic monster, alcoholic lemonade, alcoholic iced tea. Every drink imaginable is now available in alcoholic form.

The US must have a scary problem with alcoholism now, is everyone just getting loaded all the time to try and forget that everything fucking sucks?

I think it's people 30 and over who know there is no future, know it in our fucking bones, and so we might as well enjoy a variety of treats to gorge ourselves upon as the world readies itself to rupture and deflate

When the cool zone starts to get a little too hot I'm fucking off to the woods and taking my entire supply of psychedelics

Depends on the generation. Theres been studies that gen z has been decreasing alcohol consumption. Party due to the hangovers and social acceptance that you dont have to get hammered.

We even have alcoholic ice cream.

None of this stuff is marketed towards alcoholics though. It’s always low percentage, worse quality, and overpriced compared to just putting actual booze into whatever there is a hard version of.

The ice cream is actually good, but I can’t imagine a fully grown adult consuming enough of it to actually get drunk. That would take a lot of ice cream.

It's literally bad drinks made for someone who can't bother to spend 3 seconds to make one of their own with halfway decent liquor. Like, I don't mind if you want to get sloshed on screwdrivers or hard lemonade, but at least spend the money on stuff that you just have to pour in the glass one after the other.

With "something to drink" type drinks nobody cares if they're tasty as long as they're not actively unpleasant. Nobody will be mad at you if you bring some white claws or knockoff ices to a party; they're just upscale piss beers. I'd feel bad putting genuinely nice rum into a glass of coke.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 11 months ago

Fair enough, but "shitty" rum and coke is miles better than whatever grain liquor they use with the whole lot of sugar in it.

I guess it's not for me, but I totally understand bringing some smirnoff ice or white claw to a party/picnic.

Yes, alcoholism is definitely on the rise in the US.

For the reasons you mentioned.

Because those pharma assholes won't make us the soma we so clearly need so we self medicate as best we can

[–] [email protected] 31 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Reminder that alcoholism is a very serious problem in america that runs parallel to the opioid epidemic but doesn't get the media coverage because drinking is socially accepted.

[–] [email protected] 23 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Don't worry, I'll alleviate my anxieties about the opioid and alcohol epidemics by smoking copious amounts of weed every single day, also as a way to cope with my loneliness and stress and the chronic pain I experience from lack of reliable access to health care

This is sustainable and healthy

[–] [email protected] 4 points 11 months ago (1 children)

yea

At least I’m not flirting with alcoholism anymore?

[–] [email protected] 5 points 11 months ago

I took a bong rip before reading this reply and now I'm going to take another one

At least I only cried for like 20 minutes today instead of an hour, the antidepressants must be working

[–] [email protected] 28 points 11 months ago (1 children)

mimosas are such a mid fucking drink too, that's insane. i'd much rather ask for a fucking white russian at brunch than get a fucking carafe of the cheapest orange juice known to man with the cheapest champagne also known to man

[–] [email protected] 12 points 11 months ago

Risking sounding like a snob, but that's exactly the point. If you're having fresh oj with some decent bubbly (champagne is overrated), it's a really good drink. Unlimited booze? I'm getting any other drink than that.

Libs going back to brunch HARD

[–] [email protected] 24 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Seems the easier solution here is to not have bottomless mimosas

But you know, it's only dangerous binge drinking at frat houses

[–] [email protected] 15 points 11 months ago

I tried going to bottomless mimosas but they just called the police when I refused to put my pants back on

[–] [email protected] 17 points 11 months ago

I better not get charged if I make it all in the toilet. As a descendent of Romans, this is part of our culture

[–] [email protected] 16 points 11 months ago

The Marina sucks because it is full of adult babies. This is an example of that.

[–] [email protected] 15 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Which type of liberalism is this?

It is the Wine Cave Warrior code. It's not alcoholism if it's expensive alcohol.

I've seen with my own eyes a "grown-ass men" well into middle age throw a violent temper tantrum and get thrown out of a restaurant, drunk off his ass while screaming "DO YOU KNOW WHO I AM?"

Worst part was that was a relative and I was also at that table, and got some of his "can't be an alcoholic because this is expensive alcohol" on my clothes from his rage-sweep of the table. grill-broke

I dunno, I wanna say critical support. I've worked in catering in long enough and have come home smelling of other folks' drinks and barely covering the rent. But as others have pointed out, this misses both the problems of the system and can unfairly target someone that is just sick or has a disability or something.
