Emotional support fish is actually the commander, Lt. Gills

I was envisioning dolphins trained in tank warfare. The First Armored Cetacean Division.

[–] [email protected] 30 points 10 months ago (1 children)

If dolphins can be astronauts they can command a tank.

[–] [email protected] 31 points 10 months ago

posadas yeah, I support the troops

[–] [email protected] 37 points 10 months ago (1 children)

they should do this but with submarines

[–] [email protected] 20 points 10 months ago

They could finally use screen doors!

Water transmits sound much better than air, so the shockwave from any explosion (possibly including the tank's own gun) would rupture the eardrums of everyone inside.

Yeah, just don't get hit

They travel further, but higher frequencies slow down due to the medium.

It'd probably muffle some of the more damaging high frequency sound waves but there'd be some shockwaves of lower frequencies involved which might do something else to you

[–] [email protected] 7 points 10 months ago (1 children)

No, the speed of sound through water is essentially independent of frequency. Sound is a compression wave.

You're thinking of transverse, or surface waves: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=95sQcSulRFM

Given the high amplitude and nearness to the gun I'd guess nonlinear propagation would play a big part so that's interesting. IDK if that makes for a more intense shock front.

I was under the impression that high frequencies don't propagate well through water, but that's dumb because sonar exists lol.

Blame it on lack of sleep

[–] [email protected] 10 points 10 months ago

yeah but if it transmit sounds better that means you can also hear better so ruptured eardrums aren't so much of a problem. basically a 0 sum thing

[–] [email protected] 31 points 10 months ago

If you put enough life plants and filter media in, it becomes a miniature ecosystem and you can poop in there

[–] [email protected] 29 points 10 months ago

I mean a modernized Abrams already weighs 80 something tonnes so how much worse could this really be.

[–] [email protected] 27 points 10 months ago

Add Sadam and re upload

Fun tank fact! Due to a tendency for the M4 sherman to explode into flames when hit in the ammunition, it was devised to stow the ammo in water, coining the term "wet stowage"

[–] [email protected] 15 points 10 months ago

we mwust stowe ouw ammow in wet stowage uwu

[–] [email protected] 14 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago)

So that's where that comes from! I'm always telling my friends about my wet stowage, now I know

that is a fun fact though, thank you

dying instantly as an external explosion causes a shockwave in the water that ruptures everyone's organs

[–] [email protected] 23 points 10 months ago (1 children)

But have you considered... the Piss Tank?

[–] [email protected] 11 points 10 months ago

Already done in Poland

[–] [email protected] 17 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Tank guy tank water > gamer girl bath water

over/under on when the IDF starts selling that?

[–] [email protected] 13 points 10 months ago (1 children)

This is literally just Evangelion

Get in the fucking Merkava Shinji gendo-tent

[–] [email protected] 12 points 10 months ago

This is just a reverse submarine

Makes me think of Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker where the mech's cockpit fills with water for some reason

[–] [email protected] 15 points 10 months ago (2 children)

Any ambulatory mecha would have massive motion sickness issues for the pilot whenever it walked. Suspending the operator in a fluid would possibly dampen the effects of bobbing around on the vestibular system and dampen shock from collisions or high-G turns. At least I imagine. I haven’t played Peace Walker but that’d be my reason for that to be in the design.

[–] [email protected] 16 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago) (1 children)

Huh, that actually makes sense! It's worth pointing out that it also allows for a woman to be piloting said mech in a bikini and Kojima has terminal coombrain so that might factor in too lmao (maybe I'm not giving him enough credit idk)

[–] [email protected] 5 points 10 months ago

It's not even a bikini it's just underwear. So...yeah, fanservice, just fanservice, albeit with an in-universe explanation as what Southloop said is pretty much it.

In Peace Walkers defense, you can also go on a swimsuit date with Kaz and get hot manbod so at least it's somewhat inclusive

[–] [email protected] 2 points 10 months ago

this is why mecha need to be smaller, agile, and well-coordinated, like a ballerina or someone taking that rich person ettiquette book-balancing-on-your-head-as-you-walk class, rather than a huge stompy brutish thing almost falling over with every step (looking at you, battletech)

What about the watermelon tank?
