I don't know if this is related or not, but would it be weird if I joined this community even if I'm a cis person?

P.S.: joining in the meaning of "clicking the button to get updates about the Lemmy community". I'm sorry if I'm bothering anyone with my presence, this is not my intention. I just like memes in general.

This is surely going to affect my identity later on.

[–] [email protected] 18 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

If you're gonna, you should put your pronouns in your username! power-genius

[–] [email protected] 18 points 3 months ago (1 children)

so the question is, why do you as a cis person want to be in a trans space? that's not to say you can or can't be here, just something for you to think about

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 months ago (1 children)

I meant joining as "following the community".

[–] [email protected] 5 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago) (1 children)

This doesn't answer her question. Why do you want to be here?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 3 months ago (1 children)

If I give you an answer, could you please reading it with patience? I'm not very good at communicating, and your replies are making me anxious.

[–] [email protected] 17 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago) (5 children)

Are you questioning? If yes, sure, there's plenty of space for someone trying to figure themselves out and learn.

If not, fuck off. Lurk if you absolutely must but don't fucking interact.

[–] [email protected] 17 points 3 months ago (1 children)

You can join if you're questioning!

[–] [email protected] 2 points 3 months ago

I'm gonna be honest. This makes me question (myself).

[–] [email protected] 17 points 3 months ago (2 children)

yes, admit you are an egg and you can stay.

Pronouns or bust popuko-gun

[–] [email protected] 11 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago) (2 children)

depends what you mean by β€œjoin”

if confidently cis
good things to do:

  • subscribe to the community and lurk only to get a better understanding of trans people
  • add pronouns in your display name to make the lemmyverse better for trans people
  • upvote posts and comments for visibility and support
  • cis questions go in a place like [email protected] where trans people will respond because this is a trans majority instance, but it’s in a space users expect to interact with cis people

don’ts

  • never downvote in the comm, you do not have the prerequisites to be entitled to an opinion on trans things. hexbear will discard it anyway but it affects visibility in your home instance and maybe others
  • don’t interact other than upvoting, this is a place to escape cis stuff that oversaturates almost every other space

might be missing some points

if exploring the possibility you are trans, congratulations, you are gender questioning and can comment here to help sort yourself out, make sure to use content warnings and spoilers and err on the side of using too many too often

[–] [email protected] 3 points 3 months ago (2 children)

Thank you for the explanation. I've probably got it.

  • add pronouns in your display name to make the lemmyverse better for trans people
Would it also count if I added any symbol that I identify as male? Like "[male]" or the male gender emoji? By the way, what I meant by "join" is just following the community (UI Button). I'm bad at communicating online ☹️
[–] [email protected] 5 points 3 months ago

also, switching the language box to β€œEnglish” or β€œUndetermined” is necessary for comments in this comm to show up for most users

[–] [email protected] 4 points 3 months ago

nah, you’re good. and the pronouns thing is for interacting in english spaces and it’s fine to not add it if you only intend to lurk and learn and mostly interact in non-english space.

male is a fine identity, but males can use any pronouns so a male may have [they/them] pronouns and still be male, so [male] is useless to indicate what pronouns to use

do you want only [he/him]? do you mind people referring to you as [they/them] or [she/her]? if you don’t have pronouns preferences you can use [any] or [none/use name]

[–] [email protected] 10 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Just a heads up, most of your other comments in this thread are labeled as being in Portuguese. Might want to fix that, because I can't see them on my account (had to go to a private tab) and I'm guessing that might be true for some other users too.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 3 months ago (1 children)

can also click on the rainbow star under the comment to see them (under on hexbear-ui, above on lemmy-ui)

[–] [email protected] 6 points 3 months ago (1 children)

That doesn't work for me, for these comments. I'm guessing it really doesn't want to show me comments in another language (but these are actually in English, so should be tagged that way).

[–] [email protected] 5 points 3 months ago (1 children)

oh, strange, clicking on it under the top comment should be the same as opening this link
https://lemmy.eco.br/comment/8746992
weirdly, can see the reply comments in inbox and respond there, so at least the people being replied to have a workaround

[–] [email protected] 7 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Ooh, click it on top comment, not one of the replies with missing replies. And yes I got it in my inbox but not the thread, that's how I figured out this was an issue.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 3 months ago

blocking languages other than what moderators can handle is intended, not sure the language field is something that can be edited after commenting, but yeah OP needs to switch to the box to appear here

[–] [email protected] 9 points 3 months ago (2 children)

Given you aren't from hexbear, I assume its not just to support us in the megathread wars.

Do you know someone who is trans (like a significant other or child) and just wanting a better understanding?

Are you personally questioning?

Are you just here to gawk?

Personally, I don't care as long as cis people remain a small minority. But a lot of people use the mega for personal stuff they would prefer cis people not to be following.

[–] [email protected] 11 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago) (1 children)

Also. Don't say something like

I have at least one trans friend and many gay friends (mainly from climbing).

before acting like that gives you some authority to talk about trans issues. And especially don't follow up a couple comments later saying something like

But I’ve never asked my trans friend what she thinks (so I do accept my opinion could be plain wrong).

(those quotes are from someone in [email protected] today, not here)

[–] [email protected] 8 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Just saw the person you are talking about, my god fuck them. Lemmy really is just reddit.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 3 months ago

I wonder if they even realize how much they sound like racists with "a black friend"...
