Vietnam under Chinese rule or Bắc thuộc (北屬, lit. "belonging to the north") (111 BC–939, 1407–1428) refers to four historical periods when several portions of modern-day Northern Vietnam was under the rule of various Chinese dynasties. Bắc thuộc in Vietnamese historiography is traditionally considered to have started in 111 BC, when the Han dynasty conquered Nanyue (Vietnamese "Nam Việt") and lasted until 939, when the Ngô dynasty was founded. A fourth, relatively brief, 20-year rule by the Ming dynasty during the 15th century is usually excluded by historians in their discussion of the main, almost continuous, period of Chinese rule from 111 BC to 939 AD.

The four periods of Chinese rule did not correspond to the modern borders of Vietnam, but were mainly limited to the area around the Red River Delta and adjacent areas. During the first three periods of Chinese rule, the pre-Sinitic indigenous culture was centered in the northern part of modern Vietnam, in the alluvial deltas of the Hong, Cả and Mã Rivers.

Elements of Chinese culture such as language, religion, art, and way of life constituted an important component of traditional Vietnamese culture until modernity.

Periods of Chinese rule

First Era of Northern Domination: 111 BC–AD 40

The first period of Bắc thuộc is traditionally considered to have started following the Western Han's victory in the Han–Nanyue War. It ended with the brief revolt of the Trưng sisters.

Second Era of Northern Domination: AD 43–544

Chinese rule was restored after the Trung sisters' rebellion. The second period of Chinese rule was ended by the revolt of Lý Bôn, who took advantage of the internal disorder of the waning Liang dynasty. Lý Bôn subsequently founded the Early Lý dynasty, with the official dynastic name "Vạn Xuân" (萬春).

Third Era of Northern Domination: AD 602–905

The Sui dynasty reincorporated Vietnam into China following the Sui–Early Lý War. This period saw the entrenchment of mandarin administration in Vietnam. The third period of Chinese rule concluded following the collapse of the Tang dynasty and the subsequent defeat of the Southern Han armada by Ngô Quyền at the Battle of Bạch Đằng. Ngô Quyền later proclaimed the Ngô dynasty.

Fourth Era of Northern Domination: AD 1407–1428

Vietnam was brought under the control of China following the Ming dynasty's defeat of the short-lived Hồ dynasty. The fourth period of Chinese rule ended when the Lam Sơn uprising led by Lê Lợi emerged successful. Lê Lợi then reestablished the Đại Việt kingdom (大越) under the new Lê dynasty.

Why does so much English language media name him Hercules and then have all the other names in Greek. Who started this?

Greedflation people were obviously always right, but retailers cutting grocery prices really vindicates them further.

Went and saw Furiosa yesterday and it was fantastic. Can't get enough of that crazy post apocalyptic lady.

I started reading Blacksad (pirate comic site, don't open on your phone) yesterday and it's so gorgeous. Just stylish as fuck, great layouts, and I'm a sucker for watercolor. It's also just absolute fucking genre fiction noir which I am also rather shamelessly fond of. I think that might be from reading Calvin and Hobbes actually. Anyway, if you're into comics, Czech a look.

You know thinking about it Spy x Family is a show about a spy adopting a child for a cover story and gaslighting a woman (Who is also a spy, but he doesn't know that) to raise the child for him, and the child desperately trying to keep the family together because it doesn't want to be alone again. And that's actually kind of super dark? Anyway the second intro slaps

Me, finally busting after a six hour podcast session "well, I think that's technically an episode of goonta vista"

The music video for "Relax" by Frankie Goes to Hollywood is something else.

I think the story is: a man goes to a gay club, where he gets into a quarrel. The proprietor makes him fight a tiger, but he cuddles it instead. Then the proprietor gets undressed, and they all spray him with champagne (right as he sings "cum) Everyone gets into the groove and they have a PG-13 orgy?

Update: I appear to have terrorised the hoes. The place is on Euro time and yet not a single reply while other channels light up around it. (I showed you my freakish blogposting about a weird book you've never heard of, pls respond)

Quick chat, how can I write posts people will reply to? You'd think posting about a queer book in a queer server would work, but the subject matter (Paul Takes the Form of a Mortal Girl, again) might be too fucking weird here? I guess? I thought queers loved gender shit, I'm queers and I love gender shit i-love-not-thinking

Politics twitter is great because you're always 2 clicks away from some woman posting hardcore kink shit on main or some 19 year old dude from some midwest state with a political ideology generated by slot machine. And those two clicks are clicking on a tweet and then clicking the name of a person replying.

Scorching fucking hot take but I think I’m on to something here

Regarding the man vs bear debate (which you’d probably know about if you’re as online as me). A couple dweebs are saying “This is why men have such a high suicide rate”

I honestly think men have such a high suicide rate because they’ve oppressed all emotion in the name of conquest and domination throughout history that they’d rather destroy one final thing than do the slightest bit of reflection

Whoops no empathy from me 🤷‍♀️

[–] [email protected] 10 points 6 months ago (4 children)

Shitty take.

men have such a high suicide rate because they’ve oppressed all emotion

This is forced on boys by a patriarchal society. We are bullied to supress our emotions and the pressure to "be a man" is what drives men to suicide. All animals are driven to cultivate a stable and prosperous environment for themselves and their offspring. That desire can be perverted into what you call "conquest" but I doubt that is even the default state for men even after the societal bullying that upholds patriarchy.

Men are victims of patriarchy too.

If yall think it would be cool or funny being the most annoying and weird bitch in any given space, think again. When I post in stupid places like that, it's powered purely by spite and disdain for people who will not "pls respond" to me. Grrr.

my bathroom ceiling situation is worsening i did research and its looking like deep water damage oooaaaaaaauhhh

cant bring it up with landlord because there is none (long story short is i more or less inherited an apartment when an elderly family member passed where i pay the maintenance, i realize this set up is insanely lucky overall and im in a pretty privileged spot). must figure out a gameplan, i have no idea how one fixes this kind of thing. based on some circumstantial shit my current guess is its from a leak above me, at least that means its not my fault.

BOOMER ALERTQuick, chat - what's the best way to "reseal" a cassette?

Meet this chrome tape, which is about 23min per side and used to be a Canada-issue CBS-label copy of some 80s Rolling Stones album(not Tattoo You). Because of weird "retro" speculation, sealed and even used blank tapes have been creeping up in price. For most of my life $2-$3 CAD has been the norm for a type-I 90min, but today losers on fleabay are asking $10+ for a single TDK D-90. Criminal, so I've been into salvaging pre-recorded tapes.

Trouble is while CBS chromes are nice, they're recorded and played at 70us EQ instead of the usual chrome 120us. The tape bias EQ is weird, but basically I wanted to record on them at chrome EQ so I gored some holes into the top, required for a tape deck to detect if a tape is chrome. Of course this leaves holes in the top. What's the best way to seal these while leaving little chrome-detection gaps on top?

The nostalgia has long since worn off and I'm struck once again by how little content there is in FO3 compared to FNV. Getting antsy to travel to the Mojave but I want to clean up the DLC first so I don't have a reason to come back

My frend left me outside in her backpack all night. I was afraid some scary weird person who smells like styrofoam would hurt me!

I was mad at her but then she got really sad and that made me sad. So now I’m sad.
