Perverts Guide to Ideology

Guy Debord, born on 28 December in 1931, was a Marxist philosopher and filmmaker who co-founded the Situationist International and authored "The Society of the Spectacle" (1967).

Guy Debord began his career as a writer after dropping out of the University of Paris, where he was studying law. Debord joined the Letterist International, a group of avant-garde French artists and intellectuals, when he was 18.

Debord was first to propose the concept of the "Spectacle", referring to the role of media, culture and advertising in post-World War II consumerist society, and the way it is able to commercially co-opt and repackage counter-cultural ideas and movements.

On the nature of media and the new-found emphasis on appearance, Debord stated "Just as early industrial capitalism moved the focus of existence from being to having, post-industrial culture has moved that focus from having to appearing."

The concept of "Spectacle" became central to the ideas of the Situationist International, which Debord co-founded in 1957. Ideas from the Situationists proved influential on protesters during the May 68 uprising in France, where quotes and slogans from Situationist work would appear on graffiti and posters.

Debord himself would disband the Situationist International in 1972, following internal tensions amongst its members, and would focus on creating experimental film and tabletop war games, publishing "A Game of War" in 1987.

Suffering from depression and alcoholism in his later years, Debord committed suicide at his home in 1994.

"The more powerful the class, the more it claims not to exist."

  • Guy Debord

Situationist International

The Situationist International (SI) was an international organization of social revolutionaries made up of avant-garde artists, intellectuals, and political theorists. It was prominent in Europe from its formation in 1957 to its dissolution in 1972. The intellectual foundations of the Situationist International were derived primarily from libertarian Marxism and the avant-garde art movements of the early 20th century, particularly Dada and Surrealism. Overall, situationist theory represented an attempt to synthesize this diverse field of theoretical disciplines into a modern and comprehensive critique of mid-20th century advanced capitalism.

Essential to situationist theory was the concept of the spectacle, a unified critique of advanced capitalism of which a primary concern was the progressively increasing tendency towards the expression and mediation of social relations through objects. The situationists believed that the shift from individual expression through directly lived experiences, or the first-hand fulfillment of authentic desires, to individual expression by proxy through the exchange or consumption of commodities, or passive second-hand alienation, inflicted significant and far-reaching damage to the quality of human life for both individuals and society. Another important concept of situationist theory was the primary means of counteracting the spectacle; the construction of situations, moments of life deliberately constructed for the purpose of reawakening and pursuing authentic desires, experiencing the feeling of life and adventure, and the liberation of everyday life.

The situationists recognized that capitalism had changed since Karl Marx's formative writings, but maintained that his analysis of the capitalist mode of production remained fundamentally correct; they rearticulated and expanded upon several classical Marxist concepts, such as his theory of alienation. In their expanded interpretation of Marxist theory, the situationists asserted that the misery of social alienation and commodity fetishism were no longer limited to the fundamental components of capitalist society, but had now in advanced capitalism spread themselves to every aspect of life and culture.

When the Situationist International was first formed, it had a predominantly artistic focus; emphasis was placed on concepts like unitary urbanism and psychogeography. Gradually, however, that focus shifted more towards revolutionary and political theory. The Situationist International reached the apex of its creative output and influence in 1967 and 1968, with the former marking the publication of the two most significant texts of the situationist movement, The Society of the Spectacle by Guy Debord and The Revolution of Everyday Life by Raoul Vaneigem. The expressed writing and political theory of the two aforementioned texts, along with other situationist publications, proved greatly influential in shaping the ideas behind the May 1968 insurrections in France; quotes, phrases, and slogans from situationist texts and publications were ubiquitous on posters and graffiti throughout France during the uprisings.

I am launching a personal jihad against the people who make blankets where you can't tell which way is the long way. Fuck your almost-square blankets with no easily identifiable decorations frog-no-pretext

[–] [email protected] 20 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago) (3 children)

Ooh good point. Gonna start sewing high-contrast directional patches on my blankets. Maybe using US Coast Guard certified SOLAS reflective tape so you can tell which end will cover your footsies in an emergency

I do dearly love constructing boring every day stuff like a regular blanket or a baseball cap or whatever to the same standards you'd build emergency escape equipment on a deep sea submarine. Like a soda can with a bring red "WARNING CONTENTS UNDER PRESSURE DIRECT SPRAY AWAY FROM FACE" sign, or a baby car seat that has "RESCUE: CUT HERE" placards on it. More everdayy articles should look like you stole them from the cockpit of an experimental battle mech.

Nationalize all rental properties and build an additional 10 to 20 million units of public housing, especially near train stations. Also build a lot of train stations.

I have no evidence to back it up but suspect that my so-called career has been supplanted by large language models like ChatGPT. It's not that they do a good job, it's that they save a company enough money in a one-quarter forecast to justify their shitty work. I expect (hope?) that widespread use of LLMs subsides once the hype dies down. Observations after four months of unemployment

So this is probably going to sound somewhat absurd, but I have lib friends and socialist friends.

With my lib friends, we all hang out and it’s a forgone and accepted conclusion that they’ll all eventually get married and do the whole nuclear family thing

With my socialist friends, some are deciding to have kids, but they’re still around? Idk shit is super weird, it’s given me a completely different perspective on human relationships and how some people literally view them as a box to check off. Of course you should love and spend time with your kids, but why should that mean the end of your friendships? Socialism with yet another W, are y’all tired of winning yet?

Genuinely falling into despair about finding a place to live. Without overtime I make more than the median income for the county I live in, and you would think that would enable me to get a livable single bedroom apartment, but I can't even find a shared room situation. Maybe if I give up my two cats? That shit ain't happening though. You're supposed to be looking for places that are 1/3 your gross monthly income, right? I'm STILL in a fucking hotel room right now! Paying fucking 85% of my gross income! I'm a fucking slave and I can't escape.

And what's worse is this whole house of cards is going to come down and soon. I elected to waive tax withholding because I started so late in the year and didn't have an income before. Rent will take more than I bring in after that happens especially with holiday overtime probably being over. Or hell I could get fired. Who says they have to keep me more than a month? They're already fucking with me, with my entire timesheet getting deleted and them blaming me for it. I have to talk to them today about a disciplinary letter I must sign that says I'm going to do better.

I'm not okay

Starting to realize that I have trouble initiating affectionate/intimate contact. I don't know what it is. Maybe having lived through a pandemic kind of fucked with my mind. But I never really was the type to hug people a lot in the first place. A friend/crush of mine has been hugging me more lately and it's not like it turn them away, but everytime I get the urge to initiate a hug I freeze and end up not doing anything. I feel kind of shitty for itdeeper-sadness

Mental health rant: Begin August I finally sought help for my mental health problems that keep getting worse. Waiting list was 9 months. Past few months I have been able to function on the hope that in x months I could finally explore the cause of my problems and get help.

Just got a call that the waiting list is now 8 months… I have been waiting for 4.5 months with the idea that I knew that I would get help eventually. But now I learn that those waiting list times are just a lie. 8 months could mean 12 months, or even 36 months if they follow the same trend as before. No help is in sight after all. Would like to explain how this fucks up my life and career but that would get too personal so I’ll leave it at this.

Hate seeing a YouTube video about "why does this suck now?" and there's no mention of capitalism or they find a way to blame the consumers. I saw one where they guy literally said "companies are FORCED to make lower quality products" because the mean ole consumers want things cheaper.

There was a time when JK Rowling was viewed as having great foresight in Harry Potter and people would praise her for the allegedly meticulous planning she underwent for it.

That changed as soon as she got Twitter and started pulling random trivia out of her ass when asked about certain things. It seems like Eiichiro Oda has taken her spot nowadays as the master planner and I'm fine with that lol
